Need advice

In the couple years I've been interested in computer hardware I've attempted 2 upgrades on machines on my own, both of those attempts resulted in a dead motherboard.  Both times the Cmos died on the boards and the system was bricked, I currently have a really good PC that I like and I just ordered some more RAM (i only have 4 GB) and I want to know what I can do to stop this from happening again. the way I got my current PC is that I got all the parts to my school and I built it with some friends at school. but I can no longer do that but I need the extra RAM. what do I do to stop the mobo from dying?

If you hit a roadblock for any reason just post back and @ or Quote someone.

Also discharging any static on you is a good idea. If your PSU has a switch on it flip it to off but keep the system plugged into the wall and touch the PSU once in a while.
