About three and a half years ago I built a gaming PC with the following components:

ASUS X99 Deluxe

Intel Core i7-5820K

Gigabyte GTX 980 (GV-N980WF3OC-4GD rev. 1.0/1.1)

eVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2

16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 2666

And some more less relevant items

A few days ago my PC restarted giving me the following message:

"Power supply surges detected during the previous power on. ASUS Anti-Surge was triggered to protect system from unstable power supply unit!"

As this was the first time receiving the message, all components were showing up as they should, and I've got what I believe to be a good power supply, I didn't undertake any action.

Yesterday, I believe after installing a graphics driver update, my monitors lost connection to the PC after which I heard a new notification coming in. Now, every time the PC starts up and I log in, it loses connection again and gives me the same notification:

"Display driver failed to start: using Microsoft Basic Display Driver instead."

As I'm usually pretty quick with updating the drivers when new versions come out, I believe the system ran either 417.22 or 417.35 when the issues started. I've tried installing the latest drivers, drivers from back in November (416.94) and drivers from back in September (399.24), but all of them give the same issue.

Now, as you may or may not know, the 5820K doesn't come with integrated graphics, and the X99 motherboard doesn't have a graphics port, so I'm stuck with HDMI and DVI (two screens) on the graphics card. I'm debating whether this is an issue with the card (that it got destroyed by the power surge) or whether it's an issue with drivers (and the timing is just a coincidence). And, either way, if I should replace my power supply.

I'd love some advice before I clean out my bank account ?

Download DDU on a different device if you can and boot into safe mode and run that. Then try updating your drivers.

I'd guess PSU, but the G2 units are good so I'm not really sure

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Tried downloading DDU but can't seem to boot into safe mode anymore. I was able to yesterday though. I failed to mention in my main post that the drivers I tried were all on a new version of windows, without any other drivers installed. Now that I'm typing this, I realize it's probably not a driver issue.

The issue can't be just the PSU, I'm just wondering if it's worth the risk keeping it, or if I should toss it. Is there some test for power supply stability?

Thanks, but the issue isn't me not knowing how to get into it, it's that I can't get into it anymore. Seems Windows thinks the drive is corrupt and fails to open the recovery window. I tried getting a windows installer and fixing the drive, but that won't work either.

Is it still necessary though? I don't really see how DDU is going to fix a problem that exists on a fresh install of windows too.

DDU will delete any and all files and registries related to Nvidia GPU drivers. Its a deep clean to get ALL of them. This will allow you a 100% fresh install.

I ran DDU, restarted, installed the latest version again, and during the install I got the same issue again. Both screens go black. Cleaned again in safe mode, and I'm back to no drivers and one screen functioning.

Try running an older driver version maybe?

Already did, no luck.

Try physically reseating the GPU on the motherboard and see if that makes any difference.

I already removed the GPU and power connections, cleaned the entire PC with compressed air, and reseated the GPU yesterday. That didn't help either.

Two updates:

- I installed a different GPU in the same socket, connected it to power and installed its drivers. It works fine from what I can tell.

- I googled a bit more and found a message in the FAQ of Gigabyte's website with a solution to this exact problem. It tells you to install the drivers from their website, instead of other ones. I did the DDU clean and installed those drivers. Unfortunately it didn't work.

Any other possibilities before I scrap the card?

  • 2 weeks later...

Did you say you got the power surge message after you installed driver 417.22?

If yes, then I got the exact same problem as you:

I had my PC for 2 years and I was using driver 390.77 and never had any issues, but then one week ago I updated it to 417.22 and 3 hours later I opened up a game and the pc restarted giving me the same asus surge message as you. Tried a few other games and same problem happened. I DDU the driver and reinstalled 390.77 but the problem persists, I can play a few games for a few mins but then it restarts with asus surge message.

I thought that was just a huge coincidence and not related to driver 417.22 but then I see you got the same problem after installing the same driver... So not sure what happened and no idea what to do.

Cheers.

I believe I got the power surge before the driver update. Don't really see the two being connected though. I ended up getting rid of the card and buying a second hand 1070.
