Looking to get a nice audio setup going, looking to spend no more than $500 if possible. Really want a nice headset to use for gaming and movie watching. I'm also new to this space so I'm not sure if I will need a dac and amp. Probably an amp at least right?

Have a look at the schiit Vali. then the sennheiser HD 650's

LTT's Resident Porsche fanboy and nutjob Audiophile.

Main speaker setup is now;

Mini DSP SHD Studio -> 2x Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC's (fed by AES/EBU, one feeds the left sub and main, the other feeds the right side) -> 2x Neumann KH420 + 2x Neumann KH870

(Having a totally seperate DAC for each channel is game changing for sound quality)

As Derkoli said. Look at Massdrop Sennheiser HD6XX and Schiit modi+magni. If you need a microphone on the headset you can add a modmic, or a table mic.

what would you recommend for a closed back design? just scoping out my options here so I can do my own research.

Closed back? Quite like my sennheiser 598C's

I also recommend the Sennheiser 598C, I have those and they sound great.

I use a Schiit Magni amp with my AKG K712 which sound amazing so I can also recommend the Schiit stuff.
