Hi!

THE SHORT QUESTION

Which RAM should I buy for a ASUS Zenith Extreme running a TR2950X?

THE FULL STORY

Quick background
I'm a recent Mac convert who's, after moving from Final Cut to Premiere, now have seen a need to build a workstation - seeing as Apple couldn't care less about the prosumer market and all.. So - I'm a newbie at this. My "knowledge" comes from watching "how to"-videos and reviews. Before purchasing the components I checked PcPartPicker for compatibility, and seeing as the build was given the OK by them, I went for it..

Anyways:

Now it seems I'm having RAM issues.

  1. Firstly because I could not even install Windows without removing all but one stick
  2. Secondly because I'm getting random BSODs - all with different stop codes
  3. Thirdly because I'm getting errors on memtest86 (testing with one stick at a time)

My spec-list is as follows:

  • ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme, Socket-TR4
  • AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X
  • Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti FE
  • HyperX Fury DDR4 3466MHz 4x16GB
  • Samsung 970 PRO 1TB
  • Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SSD
  • WD Black 6TB
  • Corsair HX1200i PSU
  • Fractal Design Celsius S36

Any feedback is well received!

With that much RAM installed you will most likely need to run at slower speeds.  Running above 2666MHz may not be viable.

Also, set SOC to 1.1V.  That may need to be tinkered with too, but setting a static value will be better than letting it set itself.

First of all I'd make sure the BIOS is on the latest version, if it's not that could be the issue. What speed are you running the RAM at?

BIOS is indeed running the latest version, and the RAM is running at 3466MHZ when set to Auto in BIOS

Aha! See, these are things I have no clue about - cheers for that!
I will let memtest86 finish up the test I'm currently doing and check back with the results of your suggestions. Much appreciated, buddy!

I just watched a video where someone was using a 4x16GB at 3200MHz so I might be wrong about what expectations to have in terms of speed so perhaps you need to re-seat your CPU.  I can't remember which platform it was where a bad seat led to memory issues, but it might be worth ruling out.

I've lowered the MHz to 2666 as you suggested. Thus far things are running great! ?

Currently running Blender Benchmark, with AIDA64 coming up right after that. I'll also see if I keep getting those totally random BSoDs, which really just have occured out of nowhere from just running everyday tasks.

I'll absolutely keep this thread posted on the situation.

So far I'm very very happy, nick name - great call on that ram speed :D

Update:

So after changing the RAM to 2666 MHz it all seems to have worked out fine!

- I ran a bunch of benchmarks and stress tests, and so far the system is stable.

I've since bumped the RAM speed to 3200 MHz and ran AIDA64 without problems.

I might keep bumping the speeds till I find the sweetspot, but for now: all hail @nick name!

Did you set your SOC voltage to 1.1V in BIOS?

I'm probably n00bing this up.. See: I could put it to "manual", but I couldn't actually set the value ? So I though: fuck it, let's go with auto - and it hasn't been a problem yet.

When you set it to Manual it then gives you the field to input a voltage value.

Yes, but I can't access the field..? I may very well be doing it wrong. Here's a short vid: https://photos.app.goo.gl/7WakDonUgufLdybr8

Also, the field that appears under it, the one that says "auto" - that one I can't change.

In that video the field that was active was the one where you select auto or manual.  Once you've selected manual and the next field appears you have to then select it with the mouse or key down to it.  The field that is active is highlighted in red.

I've retreated to the family cabin for the holidays - will get back at it, come 2019!

Thank you so much for your help thus far. I really appreciate it ? I'll make sure to keep this thread updated.
