Question on Possible Rig

Go to solution Solved by LukeSavenije,

well, consumer intel chips have 16 lanes from the chip, and 24 coming from the chipset. you might be better off with amd here. do you want me to look into your build to put some nicer parts in?

I am working on a possible rig to upgrade to where I may have about $1000 to spend. I am looking at a few parts but the pcie lane issue still confuses me. So, I am hoping to get a little insight at this time. My goal is to speed up a harddrive with optane memory, having an nvme boot drive, use an elgato hd60 pro streaming device, and possibly consider vertical mounting for gpu. While vertical gpu mounting doesn't seem possible while still having room for the hd60 pro, I am still concerned about pcie lanes. So, with the build below will this even be possible or will I run into problems with pcie lanes? I have a 1060 3gb card, a 240R CoolerMaster AIO, and a Sandisk 240SSD already that will be moved over from my current setup.

I have also watched the pcie lanes videos from linus and GN but still feel confused.

The only real reason I am going with Intel for this is because of optane being able to boost a larger harddrive that will hold all my games. I would like all my games to be installed and run off of 1 drive but don't want to pay a larger amount for an SSD for 2tb or more. I have looked at AMD builds and might just have to go that way. Thanks for the offer though.

one: you know storemi exists on amd?

two: optane isn't worth it for games imo. you can get a pretty good 240 gig ssd for that price. why not that and a hdd?

I was not. That completely skipped my mind. I would like to have 1 large disk for games and maybe add another for videos down the line. I already delete and reinstall games to my current ssd and I am not a fan of it; 2 games are currently installed on a 500gb harddrive cause there was no more room on the 240gb ssd for them. I'll have to continue my research.

btw, don't forget to quote me, so I get a notification. Do you really notice the difference between a hdd game load and a ssd one? But some more research wouldn't be a bad idea. if you need any help, you can still let me know

Thanks for that, I am new to this. I did notice a drastic difference in 1 title but my other titles weren't as bad. That's when I started looking into optane memory.

maybe this will help you a bit, but you can do this with any ssd, not only optane (this was in the beta back then, but it gives a good assumption)

Found the video after you mentioned StoreMI and yeah, I think an AMD route is making more sense. Gonna be giving up that sweet NZXT board but I would have less headaches using that last option Linus presented than praying an Intel build will have no hiccups. Thanks for all your help.

well, nzxt boards do look good, but there are better boards for the price. good luck!
