Hio, so i have a i3 3240 (pls dont judge) and i've researched Amazon, Ebay, and other sites to get a cpu. I've got a GeForce GTX 1050 gpu and 8 gigs of ram. im upgrading to a ViewSonic VX2458-C-mhd 24" from an Asus VS247.

So CPU i got to the conclusion of an i5-7640X X-Series ($208.55 AUD) or an i7-4770 ($185 AUD). Should i buy it or you guys suggest one better for price and a bit less for performance. i'll use it for gaming.

EDIT: REDACTED. I thought the OP had a different socket.

You can't use the 7640x. It's a different CPU socket. The best CPU you can buy for that socket is a i7-4790k, but that's super overpriced.

I'd either go for the i7-4770 (non k) for ~ 110 USD or the i7-4790 (non k) for ~130 (USD).

Haswell CPUs are not compatible with the LGA1155 socket. Please make sure you know your socket types and rCPU compatibility when answering questions, as this can lead to people buying things that are not compatible, and would require a return, which sometimes is not possible.

@Mordicai The only CPUs that will fit in your motherboard are any Intel 2000 (sandy bridge) or 3000 (ivy bridge) series CPU. I would look for an i7-3770. That is the best CPU you can find for the socket, besides the 3770K, which is probably a good bit more expensive simply due to it being overclockable. That said, you can also look for an i7-2600. It's very close to the 3770 in performance, and might be a bit cheaper.

Ah, you are correct.

I had assumed his socket was the 1150 since his choices were either an 1150 chip or the performance version of 1150.. 2066.

Sorry about that.

EDIT: Yeah the 3770ks are overpriced (generally ~140 US), while the non k versions are usually ~85 USD. And you can always do BCLK overclocking if you have a board that supports it.

Also incorrect...... Well Haswell (4000 series) is 1150, but 2066 is the most recent high end desktop platform. The equivalent HEDT platform to ivy bridge (3000 series CPUs) would be Ivy Bridge-E (4820K, 4930K, 4960X), which uses the 2011 socket (not to be confused with 2011-3). 2066 is the newest HEDT platform, which uses Skylake-X and Skylake-X refresh CPUs (7000 and 9000 series CPUs that end in "X").

Damnit, you're right.

I'm off today. :)

EDIT: In my defense... the 7640x was literally 1 row away from the 2011s...

I was looking into a similar upgrade for my grandfather's computer.  I was considering a 3570k as it was quite a bit cheaper than the 3770k, but it doesn't have hyper threading.  I didn't feel super comfortable leaving my grandfather with an overclocked processor just in case he ran into any problems, so I ended up going with a 3770 instead.  I didn't consider going back to Sandy Bridge with the 2600 so I don't know how the prices line up, but that could be a good option too.
