1) what distro is it?

2) did it work before the upgrade?

3) did you just clone the drive or did you install from scratch?

 

Either way it looks like a corrupted disk. If the hdd isn't broken (hopefully it isn't if it's new), it might just be a botched installation/clone - try reinstalling the OS.

It's Ubuntu 18.04 lts, straight from Ubuntu website. 

Before the upgrade there was an old hdd running vista, which did work but the drive has had it. 

I installed from scratch, using a boot medium made in rufus (dd because iso didn't work)

Run a checksum to ensure the image you downloaded isn't corrupted. Try reflashing the boot medium too.

use a gparted live cd/usb to check each partition.I am not a fan of using Rufus or unetbootin for Linux liveusb creation, I usually use etcher.io, I've also had luck with YUMI
