just google the model name and you can see what it is

its not hardline water cooling, its not custom watercooling, its just a very compact AIO water cooler

That sure looks good for a graphics card upgrade, a founders edition 1070 or so would be awesome in there.

Hey guys,

(Kinda new to the forums just seeking some advice) :)

Basically I've managed to pick up an Alienware X51 R3(The one with the horrid case) with custom water cooling, an Intel I7-6700K overclocked to 4.4Ghz and some other cool specs you can find below:

  • 16Gb Dual Channel (2x8 Gb DIMMS) DDR4 PC4-17000 Non-ECC only (2133 MHz)
  • Intel® Z170 Chipset (Intel® GL82Z170 PCH) (Skylake)
  • NVIDIA Geforce GTX 960 2GB GDDR5
  • Alienware™ 330 Watt Power Supply
  • 2 TB Toshiba HDD Running at 7200 RPM
  • Samsung SSD PM951 M.2 256GB PCIe

So with this i wanted to give it to my little brother for Christmas, however i wanted to pinch the I7- 6700K for myself and for him to have my I5-7400 at 3.0Ghz. Hmmmm.

So i just wanted if the chip set on my board (ASUS H110M-R) would support this changed and what processes would i have to go through to ensure my system pull the the full power of the I7- 6700k and what adjustments would need to be made to the X51 to adjust to the 3.00Ghz, I'm pretty confident they are both compatible on both boards but i wanted to make sure on here first before messing anything up. Will bottle necking be an issue?

Here are my current PC specifications below:

  • ASUS H110M-R motherboard
  • 2x 4GB Corsair RAM at 2133Mhz
  • Nvidia GTX 1050ti AT 4GB VRAM (ZOTAC mini)
  •  Corsair 350W Power Supply
  • 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD
  • Intel I5-7400 Quad-Core @3.00Ghz

Any Advice would be much appreciated, Thanks

SuprA :)

Is the water cooling Hardline? If not, grab the motherboard and the CPU, your h110 is poorly equipped for an i7.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Thanks for responding , yes it is hardlined as it is limited to upgradability , I can only upgrade, cpu, gpu , storage and RAM on the X51 unfortunately

Just use the Alienware youself and let him have your current build. Since your mobo cant overclock the 6700k.

Well then I say look into a new motherboard like a B360 and an i5 8600 for yourself. It wouldn't make sense to have an i5 7400 under a custom loop and a K-SKU i7 in an H110 board.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Alright , cheers for the advice ! And just quickly which do you reckon is the better rig ? The Alienware ? Or the other build ?

H110 cant overclock, the entire point of the 6700k is the ability to overclock.

The z170 board may not support the 7th gen processor either, bios updates may not be available for an OEM board like that

A 6700k with a 1050ti is also a pretty substantial GPU bottleneck, you likely wouldnt see much of a performance jump at all with a 6700k upgrade from your i5.

Just leave both systems as they are, give him the Alienware as it is, theres minimal benefit to swapping parts between either of them.

Thanks man , appreciated , would’ve been wasting time by the looks of things !

Is it ? Oh cool! Well Alienware made it out to be , non upgradable so to speak?

The Alienware has better CPU, and an SSD, and basically equal GPU, so it's better.

It is up gradable on a technicality, there arent any other coolers made specifically for that compact chassis, but its mount is the same as any other LGA 1151 cooling mount.

You could put a giant tower cooler on it, just that you wouldnt be able to put the side back on. There are aftermarket slim coolers that would fit in there as well but i doubt they would perform any better than the AIO in there.

And it can be upgraded as far as what fits in the case and what the PSU can handle. You could drop a 6gb GTX 1060 into there instead of the 960 and see a pretty drastic performance increase while not taxing the PSU, since they are both 120w cards.

Sounds great ! Cheers !

Would that make a hefty power supply upgrade ? I’m sure they only run a 330w power supply

It would work, unless they only give you a 6 pin PCIe connector, then a 1060 is the best you'll get and you'll need to make sure you don't get one with an 8 pin connector.
