Sure why not. Your other options would be to not have them in RAID.

If you're worried about losing data, then don't.

If the added speed is that important, get a ssd

hello guys, is it a good idea to raid0 two WDC WD20EZRZ-00Z5HB0 ? what other options would i have?

get an ssd or make sure all the data you have on it you back up and dont mind losing if the raid fails or one drive fails cause raid 0 is very risky and most people dont do it anymore cause the risk is to high when you could just by an ssd

There is no real difference in risk between having your data on a RAID 0 array or a single drive in my eyes. If a drive fails, it fails and still takes your data with it either way. Simply not using a RAID 0 or using any other RAID is not an excuse not to have a backup routine. Data does not exhist unless it exhists in 3 places.

I like RAIDing my HDDs. Helps them keep up sequentially with my SSDs. If you need more speed out of your HDDs, there’s not really any compelling reason not to RAID 0 them. You should already be backing up anything you don’t want to lose anyways.

If you want to use RAID 5, I suggest a RAID card with a write cache. They are cheap on eBay, no reason not to use one.

The difference in a Raid0 is the amount of risk you have is multiplied by the number of drives in the raid.

So if No raid I have a 1x chance of losing my data, if 2 then 2x, if 3 then 3x, etc. In a raid 0 ANY drive failing causes the loss of data on all drives in that raid. Which is why the risk factor is worse.

ok, let me describe my situation. I have:
2 WDC WD20EZRZ-00Z5HB0 2TB dont know what to do with them
1 WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 2TB currently used as primary backup disk
1 ADATA SU800NS38 500GB SSD used as Windows install/linux install disk
1 HGST HTS721010A9E630 1TB 7200RPM 2.5" currently used as secondary backup disk

what are your suggestions?
i could either use the 2x2TB drives as backup and replace the usage of the other 2TB and 1 TB drive or just RAID0 them and use them for video editing/game installations

But guess what. In the end, that doesn’t actually matter. And it isn’t as simple as 2 drives = 2x the risk either. Lol. What matters is that you have you data backed up or you don’t. Simple. Why risk no backup?

to OP. RAID 0 two different capacity drives results in a usable capacity that is double the smallest. So I would suggest you stick to RAIDing the same capacities. The same goes for speed too.

Yes you should have a backup, but depending on the capacity that solution could be expensive (if cloud) or require a decent NAS (also can be expensive). A cheaper solution in that case would be to pick a different raid setup with some redundancy and speed boosts in the area you are looking to improve.
