Hi, I'm in the market for a new GPU. I currently have an 8700k and a GTX 1070(not ti) and am planning on getting a 1440p 144hz monitor soon. I'm not too satisfied with my 1070. I live in Canada so there should be some decent sales on monitors and maybe a slight discount on GPUs on Boxing day(Black Friday equivalent for Canada).

I don't really have a budget for a GPU, I just want something nice to treat myself and for it to last a while. Would a 2080 ti be a good decision? I know AMD has some cards coming around the corner so what I originally planned on doing is, buying the monitor and a 2080 ti on Boxing day or around Christmas time in general and just holding them until CES to see if AMD has anything good to show. If there's nothing too special, then I'd keep it but if they announced good GPUs, I'd just return the GPU and monitor and wait for the AMD cards or whatever NVIDIA releases in response.

Ty in advance.

It can be whatever day, RTX cards aren't getting any discounts, it's in shortages still and prices stayed much the same even during black friday or cybermonday or whater other day people come up with.

It's a harsh reality yea, either ways the RTX 2080 performs like the GTX 1080 Ti which is a good step up from a GTX 1070 and will enable 1440p gaming for sure.

144hz might be tricky though depends the game and your settings, if you're cool tuning it sacrificing a few meaningless ultras for more performance than you have nothing to worry.

The 2080 Ti would be great and all but like explained don't expect its price to change from what already is, waiting for AMD Navi 7nm would be ideal however the release of this product is still unknown for the most part.

Yeah I understand, they're probably not dropping. I see most stores offering Battlefield 5 for free with the RTX cards though, so I'll just take that as my discount...

Also I assumed that Navi would be announced at CES, or at least have some info released then. I COULD wait longer for Navi/next gen but there's always going to be something better coming out, so not sure if it's worth waiting a year or two if nothing is announced at CES or if I should just buy this and enjoy it.

Budget aside though, would the 2080 ti at its current price be the better buy currently? Obviously it's the best gaming GPU atm but is it a worthwhile buy? I'd hope it'd last me at least 4-5 years or so. Thanks.

If you're waiting for Navi, the latest rumors and speculation I've seen is that AMD is going to release the first version of Navi at CES and based off of the typical increase in percentages from one AMD card to the next, some people are predicting that Navi should sit somewhere between the 1080TI and the 2080TI in terms of overall performance.  Some people are speculating that the now pointless MSRP of the cards will be about the same as a 2070TI, but who really knows.

If you are an AMD fan, I'd use boxing day as a time to look for a great deal on a Free Sync monitor because there is a higher likelihood of that happening than finding a RX series card on sale.  Wait for the release of Navi and go with that.  If you don't care one way or the other, just get what's out right now.  A 1080TI or a 2080Ti will last year for years to come, and will get you great performance in gaming.

Is the 2080TI a good buy in the current market?  I mean, sure.  The prices probably aren't going to drop much if at all until the next Nvidia GPU comes out, and if the 10 series cards from Nvidia are any indicator, the next series may not even drop the RX cards much.  Navi might put a small dent into the RX series cards' pricing, but I doubt it would be anything significant.  Think of it this way, if you pay $1100 for a product that is out now, and in 3 months it drops to $1000...is it going to be THAT big of a deal?  Probably not, you paid a bit of a premium for getting it early, and if you're going to be hurt over $100, then buying a GPU with four digits in its price probably isn't a financially wise decision anyway.

Yeah...Honestly I have a feeling AMD might surprise us, I'd be perfectly happy with a card between a 1080 ti and a 2080 ti considering it'd PROBABLY be more affordable. Maybe I'll try what I mentioned, buy the 2080 ti and a Gsync monitor, and maybe also a freesync monitor and just wait for CES to see what happens.

Also you're right, the $100-200 really wouldn't make a huge difference considering I'm dropping $1700 CAD...If Navi were to come out with good cards, I'd probably buy that over the 2080 ti.
