Upgrading a 980 ti

Hi

 

I have a 980 TI. I have a Dell 24" (U2415: 1920 x 1200 at 60Hz) and an old Apple Cinema display. I am looking to ditch the Cinema Display and get a 4K monitor. I'd most likely keep using the U2415 as my gaming monitor. But, with my 980ti, playing the latest Tomb Raider at Ultra settings, I can't seem to average 60FPS. It's a little below and ever so often it even stutters.

 

  So, I am thinking of replacing the 980ti for a 1080ti. I don't want any cards from the RTX series because they aren't supported by OSX yet (I dual boot a Hackintosh).

  

   Two questions then:

  

    1) How much of an improvement will I see with a 1080ti ?

    2) I am seeing $1300 CAD for a 1080ti. Is this about right ? Seems rather expensive.

For 4K 60FPS ultra, you need a 2080 ti. The 1080 ti simply won't cut it.

A 1080Ti will get you like 50-60FPS at 4k ultra settings with an overclocked 8700k. If you want over 60FPS consistently you need a 2080 Ti. I honestly don't get 4k gaming, 1440p makes far more sense.

I know but I'm just saying that the 2080 Ti is the only thing that will get him over 60FPS consistently at 4k, and that 1440p makes more sense. Especially if OP just wants a 1080 Ti.

Which is the unfortunate reality of the situation. OSX is not ready for 4K 60FPS gaming yet

Well you aren't answering the OP's questions, which are:

 So I don't plan on gaming with the 4K monitor. I was asking more that since I can't seem to get over 60fps with my 980ti on 1200 will the 1080ti do this fine ?

1080 Ti's are pretty much not available at established retailers in Canada anymore, hence the $1,300cad price tag. Most prices are from 3rd party sellers on Amazon and Newegg, so not reflationary of the true cost if you live in Canada. I bought my EVGA SC 1080 Ti Black Edition for like $900 shortly after launch. If you are in other countries they can still be found at retail, otherwise used is your only option for a 1080 Ti.

 

As for 4k gaming performance:

GTX 1080 ti = 1 3/4 GTX 980 ti.

 

I ran one computer with a GTX 1080 ti & one with 2 GTX 980 tis. On games that got 75% usage on the second 980 ti had the same performance as the 1080 ti.

It is a good upgrade.
