Testing a used GPU (RX 580)

Kris Bendix

Hi.
I can possibly get a Gigabyte RX580 oc Aorus (4Gb) for around $130. Guy offers to give it to me for 3 day test if I want. Said he bought it on Ebay.
He himself probably wasn't a miner, but who knows what was the original seller on Ebay.
How do you feel about it, and if I get it for testing, how to best test it and is it even possible to test it properly?

So... He's just gonna give you the card? Not even like a security deposit? Or some thugs hanging out in your back yard? lol.

On a serious note, just run a program like Unigine superposition/valley/heaven, or Furmark, or any GPU stresstest for a while. 5 minutes, a couple hours, as long as it's proven to work. The card might also have some warranty left, don't know if it will transfer multiple times, but it's worth asking about. $130 is pretty cheap, but I guess if it works, it works.

GTX 970 was another option, but now I'm considering a FreeSync monitor... so... has to be AMD then. But used GTX 970 would cost about the same as far as I see now. Any benefits as far as the card health goes?

Just in case, what FPS/score should I be looking for RX 580 4Gb? Superposition/Heaven.

No idea. As long as the card takes load correctly. You could do a pass in 3DMark also if you want an actual comparable score, or a canned benchmark like in GTA V or Ashes of the Benchmark and compare it to some youtube videos. A 970 will perform similarly, a bit under a 580, so unless you can get one for ~$100, I would go for the 580. Even if you could I would still go for the 580.
