I'm looking to buy a CPU and I'm torn between the 2700x and the 9700k. I want the possibility for some light, occasional streaming and the 2700x with its higher thread count is supposed to be better for that. I want to be able to run linux though using proton for games and intel is supposed to be better for that. Just wondering if anyone else running linux has experience with either or both processors and could shine some light on the topic.

Side note:

I am a programmer and I have used both AMD and intel for compiling code and such. I haven't found much difference in development for either platform but if anyone knows any different I'd love to hear it.

If it helps, games I play:

-Dark Souls III

-GTA V

-Rocket league

-PUBG

-Middle Earth Series

-Witcher Series

I mean yes, the 2700x crushes when it comes to multi-threaded stuff, editing, etc, but the 9700k is good for gaming and some editing and streaming. The thing is, is that Linux isn't optimized very well for games and Intel's gaming power would be better, like you were thinking. The 9700k is almost $100 more and z390 motherboards are NOT cheap. The 2700x stock clocks, performs the same as the 8600k with stock clock speeds. This is a very hand in hand decision and the trade-offs are present.

When I listed out the pros and cons, I think you should get the 2700x and overclock it to faster speeds with a 280mm all in one water cooler. You'll save some money, get close to Intel speeds and get better streaming

Appreciate the help! I've never overclocked before but I have a lot of cooling mount options in my case so its a possibility. I have the lian li O-11 dynamic so I have ample room for multiple 360mm rads.

Is AMD a better first-timer // easier overclock?

I don't have Ryzen, I have older AMD and my stock cooler isn't good for overclocking. I know you can overclock the CPU from ryzen master software within windows, which is more friendly than booting into the BIOS and having to learn the motherboard's specific BIOS and its layout. The 0-11 dynamic is a great case! Use it for a 360 or 280mm rad to help with overclocking. I'm gonna say that overclocking with ryzen is better, but you should definitely look into it yourself since I don't own ryzen.

Heres a link on how to use ryzen master software to overclock

Make sure to research, good luck!!!
