As suggested by @Jurrunio I would go to 8 gigs of ram. Also, 1 mhz isnt going to give you any difference

Hi LinusTechTips forum,

  When I was playing Fortnite, I realized how lag it is when I even tried to go low mode. I wanted to upgrade my laptop. I have better experience playing in medium graphics though. I don't actually know what to upgrade actually. Should I upgrade my RAM or upgrade my drive? I have a 500GB HDD and a 4GB RAM. I always got 100% Disk and every time I turn on Fortnite, my RAM went 94%. I lag so bad that once I got BSOD. I hope I get respond soon.

 

Windows 10 Pro

Intel Core i5 5200U 2.20GHz 2.19GHz (and anyways, it said 2.20GHz then 2.19GHz, I don't get it :(( )

Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500

500GB HDD

4GB RAM

RAM to 8GB should make things more bearable, as well as an SSD to shorten boot time and load times. That's it, anymore and you might as well get a new machine altogether

drop resolution to 720p.

 

get 8GB of Ram, you should be able to scrape by playable fps. 

 

also CPU dropping frequency on a laptop while under load is completely normal

Probably not

it could be a difference between running Chrome well or not.

based on uplift from a laptop running intel 4000 series. 

 

yes, though only to a certain extent. i went from stutter 15fps to good playable 25fps.

well more ram should make a difference. it uses system memory as vram, so if you use basically all of the ram there isn't enough left for the gpu...

 

OP can test this by playing the game and monitoring gpu usage. if it's not 100% then the ram is bottlenecking it. 

 

EDIT: it should have some memory as hardware reserved, but this is usually about 100mb... not nearly enough to play a game well.

I mean, sometimes at low mode, I can still get 40 fps, not medium though 'cuz it's hard to spot a player at low mode
