Computer randomly exits hibernation or sleep mode

When I put my computer (Windows 7) into hibernate, why does it 'wake up' after a random amount of time?  I have found it exhibits this behaviour in sleep mode as well.  I put my computer into hibernate when I'm working on something and have a lot of chrome tabs open and don't want to waste time reopening them if I shut it down - thus hibernate or sleep.

 

The period of time between the computer actually shutting off and inexplicably powering back on can vary from a few seconds to a few hours.  I can usually prevent it from turning back on when hibernating by switching off the power supply, but it takes longer to enter hibernate compared to sleep mode.  Sleep mode is faster to enter but is, in my experience, more unpredictable in terms of when it will come back on.

 

Has anyone else experienced similar odd behaviour?

Many machines wake on mouse movement.  Even little vibrations can cause that to happen.  Turn your mouse over next time and see if it stays asleep.

 

Could also be Wake on Lan, or Wake on Keypress, if you have a wonky keyboard.

 

Other things can wake your machine as well, such as alarms, and perhaps windows update (if I'm remembering properly)

When you put it on sleep and tap a key on your keyboard or move your mouse it turns on i think it works for hibernation in the same way

I forgot to mention I don't touch it (it usually happens at night) and Wake On LAN is disabled in the BIOS and I don't have the 'wake on mouse' or 'wake on keyboard' input

Most of the time I do, however if I'm working on something that requires a lot of tabs in Chrome or a lot of programs open I just hibernate so I can pick up where I left off later.

for that you could use edge and click in the convenient button right next to the tabs, it will temporarly store all opened tabs to reopen them all (or some of them by choice) after restart.

also it's most likely mouse movement. Sometimes even if you dont touch the mouse and it's sitting there alone, the cursor will move of a single pixel totally unexpectedly. A thing that would never happen with old school sphere mouses.

File Explorer Options / Restore previous folder windows at logon.
