Low GPU usage(50%) in Fortnite

Ronk

My current PC :

Ryzen 3 1200

GTX 1050 Ti

8Gb ram 2400mhz

I found out that when playing fortnite at low res (1280x1024) and low settings, my GPU usage is only at 50% Max even with uncapped FPS

at 1920x1080 it can get to 90% rarely but stays at 50-65% pretty much all the time. Why it's doing that ?

Cpu usage is pretty high(80-90%) and memory usage goes to max 7 GB and i have 8 so its good

On idle my cpu usage goes to almost 0% so probably no background programs

Sorry I haven't responded yet, I was heading home from work. Have you overclocked your CPU? And what settings are you running? Try running everything max (if you aren't already) to see if your GPU usage goes up. If not, you might be running into a CPU bottleneck with that game. Ryzen 3 1200 is a great CPU, HOWEVER, it's performance is heavily depended on your RAM speed. This isn't as apparent in the ZEN+ cups. If your cpu is overclocked, try increasing your RAM speed or enable your XMP profiles if your RAM kit is compatible. Try other games that are more graphically intensive and see what happens.

Also worth noting, what FPS are you even running?

Actually, its not bottlenecked, at high settigns it gets at a higher percentage, its just that at low res and low settings it uses only upto 65% of the GPU (dont know why, probably bad  game optimization)

the fps are pretty good (like 200max to under a 100) but i think it could get better with a full usage

Well, games usually have a soft frame cap. Unreal Engine 4 has a max of 200 fps I think. So your GPU only has to work so hard to get to 200 so you won't actually see 100 percent usage. However, given your cpu usage, its about capped out so if there wasn't a fps soft lock on the game, you're still limited to your cpu. Based off what you said your usage was.

gpu bottlenecking the cpu? maybe try 1440p and see if the cpu usage drops

This happened to me try going into fullscreen

This fixed my issue! I have a 1080 Ti and 2600X and was bouncing from 100-130 FPS with like 60% GPU and 30% CPU (max 70% on a single core) noticed I had windowed fullscreen on, as soon as I turned it to Full screen my GPU went to 80% and I was capping my refresh rate of 144 FPS. Turned off vsync and was able to achieve much higher but no need to. Wonder why this is...

I've attached pictures of before and after full screen, max settings. My GPU usage actually went down in this example but my FPS rose. Strange lol.

Sorry to answer 2 years after. Your gpu is actually running at 100%, in windows task manager it shows how the gpu is used overall. There are 5 parts in a graphics card, the GPU Core, Frame Buffer, Video Engine, Bus Interface and Memory. This is all combined in task manager. So your GPU core is used at 100% but everything else is low so task manager will display 50% instead of 100%. Try using Open Hardware Monitor to monitor the usage of your pc next time.
