1440p or 4K?

My 1080p monitor is a bottleneck for my PC and I found setting the resolution (dynamic super resolution) to 4K gets me better frame rates in some games. I like high refresh rates over resolution so if I upgrade my monitor would I be better off with a 120-144hz 1440p or 4K monitor? I would guess 1440p would be better for higher frame rates but I want a second opinion

I would go up with 1440p personally. 4k is there, but not quite main stream and GPUs cant quite make it there yet reliably for 60 fps quite yet with the exception of the 1080ti and Titan Xp. It will likely be another 3-5 years before GPUs are truly mainstream for 4k without an issue.

I do not get how a monitor can bottleneck your PC nor how you can get better framerates at 4K.

 

You have answered your question by yourself: you prefer higher refresh rates, then go for 1440p 144Hz.

gaming: high refresh rate 1440p or 1080p

desktop: 4k 60hz

 

probably 1440p because high refresh rate panels are a thing

My personal recommendation is 1440p 144Hz, no compromises and still possible to get that out of most games with a decent GPU.
