RAM Mixing of Same Type

Greetings! I am looking to get my hands on some more RAM. I have 16Gb (2x8) Geil Potenza 2400MHz ddr4, but I am borrowing one of the 8Gb sticks from my brother leaving me with only one 8Gb stick left. Could I get a set of 2x4Gb sticks of the same company, speed, pins, etc?

Depends on pricing, really. Even 8Gb memory kits are in the range of 80-90 USD.

In my honest opinion, going with one 8Gb stick instead of 2x4Gb sticks is a better option. With current pricing, it's cheaper and leaves room for expansion down the road.

The pins and the speed has to be the same, but the company doesn't.

Speed doesn't have to match, the board will default all memory to speed of the slowest DIMM.

@Crunchy Dragon This is what I thought too, but I cannot find 8Gb sticks anywhere. Any places your know of? Thanks!

Depends on your location. Fry's Electronics is a good spot, as well as Best Buy, Micro Center, Amazon, Newegg, Craigslist, etc.

Most electronics stores will sell RAM in my experience.

True, but some RAM, which the speed is higher than what the OP already has, will cost more than what the OP needs. Meaning the OP would over pay for the ram if it is above or the OP will get slower speeds than expected when getting a ram with slower speeds.

Just look at PCPP

There are lot's of high speed ram that's cheaper than slower ones

Ram pricing is all over the place
