Setting up email on phone

I have set up a personal email server with RoundCube dovecot and postfix I can access my email just fine from my website but I can not figure out how to set it up with my android phone is there anything specific I need to do everything i do comes back with some sort of error

Figure out which protocol you want to use (imap / Activesync / pop3), make sure your mail server supports it, forward the ports in your firewall.

Does your phone work while it's local on the network?

nope

When you try to add your mail server, are you going by fqdn or an IP address?

fully qualified domain name

If possible try by IP, could be as simple as a DNS issue.
