Crashing/freezing, possible GPU or PSU failure

I'm finding a lot of issues like this when I search, but none similar enough to help. I just built a new system in the last couple of weeks, and everything was working fine until I tried to play a game on it. It doesn't matter what game it is, and sometimes the crashes happen even under idle loads. I originally suspected my GPU (XFX R9 390 DD), because under any moderate or higher load the temperature would just rise steadily until the system crashed. The screen goes black, and no inputs respond. I've also seen some issues like this come from a faulty PSU (EVGA 650W G2), but I can't find enough information to be sure. Installing MSI Afterburner helped delay the crashes a bit, so it may still be an issue with thermals. BIOS, drivers, and software are all up to date. What can I look for here?

Could be the PSU...but freezing is a very rare symptom of a faulty PSU, which usually completely crashes the system/BSOD. The crashing/freezing is probably caused by something else..

No, I get a black screen and an unresponsive computer. I had a visual failure once, but it recovered seconds later and hasn't been a problem since.

Which is why my first suspicion is the GPU. It's the only non-new piece in the entire build. The friend that gave it to me told me it was just extra and worked fine (and I have no reason to disbelieve him), it just may be outstripping the PSU I have and I don't know how to find that out. PCPartPicker says that an average load for this system should be about 500W, more than covered by the 650W supply. Still, if there was no issue, I wouldn't be getting reproducible crashes.

Yeah, it's probably your GPU or RAM--more likely to be GPU than RAM. Try running Memtest to just knock out RAM from possible causes.

Just ran Memtest, 100% no failures.

 

I'll run some more tests tomorrow.

Necro post because this still isn't fixed. I returned my 650W for an 850W, and the problem occurs less frequently, but is still totally reproducible in graphically intense games. I'm fairly certain it's the GPU now, I just don't know what could be causing it.
