Refurbished stuff

At this point, I'm not sure that I should shell out the money for a newer laptop and I'm thinking about getting a high end refurbished last-gen laptop because spending 1400 to 1900$ on a clevo dosen't fit the books right now. Specifically this

hard moderate gaming with some rendering and streaming (streaming will be done using the resources of my other G751).

I only use laptops due to the fact that I go to other places a lot, so that solution would not be feasible for me.

Well, a 500$ system still won't do it for me because of the fact that I want to play games at high/ultra with at least 75fps (refresh rate on monitor).

That's the thing though, at this point I don't want to spend 1900$ on anything and just go for something that will give me the desired performance at a lower price.

I'd suggest a mini itx system or downgrade your expectations and spend five bills

yes everyone knows you can get better components on the desktop. but you can't bring your mini itx pc with you on the train or the car or the library and work? and it is NOT a mobile solution, just a more portable one. Pain in the ass to set up everytime and also YOU CANT WORK WITHOUT AN OUTLET. Can't move from 1 location to another without completely breaking down and repackaging the set up. Can't work on the fly. Can't adjust to changing needs. You are stuck. If you're in a restraint and need to pull up a report, fucked. If you're in the car and you need to check something, fucked. If you're on the plane and you need to do work, fucked.

You may try looking at the price on that link that I provided in the OP, and then see the fact that I'm in need of a LAPTOP and not a desktop.

What do you think about the solution of just getting a 980m machine for 870$ instead of spending a shitload more on a 1060/1070 machine?

yeah you can take it anywhere, but yes it is larger then a laptop

 

well yes you can work without an outlet, inverter

 

depends on how you set it up, but yeah you could move around, on the fly.

This is a really nice price. If it's legit. Doesn't have a photo and several hundred dollars cheaper than the other reburb 980ms. Proceed with caution here. But if it's legit. It'll be great performance wise. Do note it's a 17in laptop that's actually pretty heavy and that Haswell chips are like burning furnaces so you still might need to mod it a bit.

and how much is an decent inverter going to cost? 500-600 dollars more? Are you really going to tell me you are going to bring a power generator WITH you at ALL TIMES to use your DESKTOP PC and set it up EVERYTIME you need to do something? really? is that what you're saying. 

 

also in the video he's moving from ONE SET LOCATION to another. He's not using it on the fly. On the car, on the plane. etc. He's moving a ITX PC to another location and I already mentioned that in my previous comment.

I believe it is legit and I am aware of the 17in heavyness, I already have a G751 (965m) and know how the machine works. I am actually planning to bios and vbios mod it after repasting to get the max out of it.

Then you'll be fine. An OCed 980m (and these things can OC) perform as well as the 1060 (despite the nvidia marketing telling you it's like a 980). 980ms on the whole are more "VR" capable than the first batch of 1060s because most 980ms are well cooled and can OC heavily whereas the first batch of 1060 in thin and lights consistently failed VR spec because of thermal and tdp limitations.

Yeah, I was figuring a vbios modding would be good to bring it up to 970 levels.

Nice thing about this listing is that it is sold and shipped by newegg and not some 3rd party seller, so after a repaste and bios mods I think it will be a great sub 900$ machine.

yes sir. you'll beat most 1060s too. for benching purpose maxed out 980ms bench near 10k FS whereas only the MXM1060s with Prema Mod overclocked to 2000mhz bench near 11.5k Desktop 970s bench near 10.5k stock give or take.

Thanks for the tips pen, but I'm also wondering, are you experienced in bios modding? If so I may want some help here in the near future with it. Never done it before.
