Plagued By Screen Tearing

I've never been able to play a game without having extremely noticeable screen tearing. I used to be running a GTX 680 OC from Gigabyte which I thought was the problem, sent it in, got a new one, no fix. So I got a new monitor, no fix. I deemed that system doomed and just moved on.

 

I bought a Razer Blade 2016 since I began to travel a lot. Thinking a brand new system would solve my problems, I have wrong. Still when I play my games I have horrid screen tearing that takes away from the experience. No matter what game I play (primarily FPS: CS, CoD) I have ridiculous screen tearing which makes my games unplayable for me. No matter what resolution I play at: 720p, 1080p, nothing fixes the problem. I have the most recent driver updates from nvidia, and I am still unable to get the tears to go away. 

 

Can anyone give me advice to fix this so I can finally enjoy my games?

Screen tearing can only be fixed software side with free sync, g sync, or v sync. There was nothing wrong with your monitor, GPU, or anything. It's the nature of gaming without adaptive sync

screen tearing doesn't have anything to do with the graphics card or monitor specifically. It has to do with the framerate the graphics card is sending to the monitor and the monitors refresh rate. Vsync, gsync, freesync fix screen tearing. Vsync cause a lot of input lag, gsync cost more and only works with nvidia cards. Freesync only works with and cards.

Firstly, what model of the Razer Blade 2016 do you have? Secondly, Screen tearing occurs when your monitors refresh rate can't keep up with the massive amount of frames your card is pushing to it.  So, in a single frame draw, its trying to show multiple frames instead of just one.  Try enabling vsync or the proprietary ones from amd (freesync) and nividia (gsync), depending on what gpu you have.

I have an early 2016 model with the 970 in it.

 

Am I able to run Gsync on my screen? I thought that it would only work on Gsync enabled monitors for desktops or higher end gaming laptops

Some Razer blade models come with screens that are gsync capable. can you list your system specs for the laptop?

From my limited research it looks like the screen doesn't support G-Sync. Only when they upgraded to skylake and the pascal GPU's did they include a G-Sync screen. Your best bet is to just enable V Sync. The input lag isn't very bad unless you're playing competitive shooters. Just make sure fullscreen is enabled, not windowed or borderless. Fullscreen helps cut down input lag too. 

That being said, I usually play with V Sync enabled AND using borderless windowed mode because I have 2 monitors and hate alt-tabbing. The input lag even with both of those is fine for me. 

 

Short answer: turn on V-Sync

What resolution is your screen? The review i read said it had 3200x1800 panel which seems like an odd choice considering the graphics chip.

The resolution is indeed 3200x1800.

 

I'm going to try out using V-Sync and see how my experience changes. I will report back whatever my findings may be.

I've tried playing with V-sync on for some time now. The delay when playing CS:GO was noticeable enough for it to be affecting my games, so I ultimately had to turn it off.
