Upgrading from i7-870 to Ryzen 1600 or 1700

Hi all,

So as the title says, I am looking to upgrade from my almost 8 year old i7-870. She has been going strong for years with a solid OC, but my MB has been slowly dying over the last 6 months.
At this point over half of my USB ports aren't working, and I can no longer post with any OC at all.  So yes it's finally time to put this CPU/MB to rest.

With only upgrading the GFX card from a gtx 480 to a gtx 970, and changing out the HDD for an SSD this was a solid machine for video editing and gaming with even current gen games.

With this new build, I'm looking to build another system that will last me a good long time as well.

I've narrowed down my choice to either the r5 1600, or the r7 17000.  Streaming is something i enjoy, and video and photo editing is a hobby for me. I don't mind that the 1600 will have longer render times than the 1700 as they will both destroy my old i7-870 times I've lived with until now.

Mostly I'm just wondering if it's worth the extra cost to add more "future proofing" to this build up front.

Every review is see shows similar results between the two when it comes to over clocking.

So before I pull the trigger, does anyone have any final input for me?

P.S. I will be matching it with an MSI Tomahawk B350  and 16gb of 3200 approved ram.

Thanks in advance for your time!

i would get a 1700, extra 2c/4t will be worth the price for editing and potentially futureproofing, moore's law have slowed down considerably.

Hey, I just wanted to say a quick thank you to @nerdslayer1 and @Redicat for their replies!

I did however end up going with the r5 1600.  I was all for the r7 1700, until I was able to get an amazing discount on the r5 1600 picking it up for around $180 USD. Since AMD is planning to support this socket until 2020-2021?I figured get the discount now, and if i need more power later, I can pick up an r7 in the next few years.

Thanks again!
