Simple Memory question

So I'm currently thinking of upgrading my memory to 16gb. I currently have 1x8 GB at 2133mhz. Is it possible to buy 2x4 GB memory and at a higher speed while still using my other 8gb memory stick. Thank you in advance for the responses!

Just get another 8gb stick of 2133mhz RAM.

1. Does you motherboard have 3 RAM slots?

2. They will run at speed of the slowest one, i.e. 2133MHz.

CPU: i7-2600K 4751MHz 1.44V (software) --> 1.47V at the back of the socket Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 (BCLK: 103.3MHz) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 RAM: Adata XPG 2x8GB DDR3 (XMP: 2133MHz 10-11-11-30 CR2, custom: 2203MHz 10-11-10-26 CR1 tRFC:230 tREFI:14000) GPU: Asus GTX 1070 Dual (Super Jetstream vbios, +70(2025-2088MHz)/+400(8.8Gbps)) SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (main boot drive), Transcend SSD370 128GB PSU: Seasonic X-660 80+ Gold Case: Antec P110 Silent, 5 intakes 1 exhaust Monitor: AOC G2460PF 1080p 144Hz (150Hz max w/ DP, 121Hz max w/ HDMI) TN panel Keyboard: Logitech G610 Orion (Cherry MX Blue) with SteelSeries Apex M260 keycaps Mouse: BenQ Zowie FK1

The problem with getting another 8gb stick is the one that I have is a oem stick and it might be more expensive to find the same exact one and yes the motherboard has 4 ram slots. It's a ASRock h170m pro 4

I'm not sure how dual channel works on your motherboard with RAM sticks of different volume installed. See if you can exchange that 8G stick for 2 4G sticks that match 2 other 4G sticks you are going to buy. Otherwise buy another 8GB stick

You really don't need matchIng sticks. You'll do just fine any 8gb stick you can find, whether OEM or not.

So they would just not be able to use dual channel mode then

Actually, they would. Even with non matched sticks, they'll still run dual channel if the size is the same.
