Quick raid question

desertcomputer
Go to solution Solved by leadeater,

No, both are NAS rated disks and ZFS isn't picky about the disks being exactly the same. They should at least be the same size and performance etc but other than that there should be no issue.

Will i have problem with ZFS with two 2TB WD REDS and with another 2TB SEAGATE NAS drives?

Hi there :)

To add on top of what @leadeater explained well, generally RAID controllers are demanding to what drives are they handling and any differences in the drives' firmware, speed, capacity, features, cache size, brand and model, etc. In this case, the file system isn't as demanding so you are not very likely to encounter drive dropouts due to these differences and you should be safe as these drives have the additional features required for a safer NAS/RAID performance.

What RAID type are you going for? What type of usage are you looking at?

Captain_WD.

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^

Raid 10 equivalent in ZFS (FreeNAS 9.10) It for backup of important files/plex media center.

You may get away with different drives in this file system for this type of usage. Do have in mind the risks though. If you have a separate place for backups for the most important data from the array do store the data there too so you avoid data loss issues. :)

Yes, a portable hard drive and cloud storage(Google  Drive).

In that case you should be completely safe :) do post some feedback and test results when you do the drive mixture configuration.

That's OK :) In the mean time feel free to post back with any other questions or if you need advice on anything else that you plan on, I'd be happy to help with whatever I can!

Since you are using a drive from another country make sure to check the RMA and Warranty policies from the vendor!

I can always ship the drives back to my mate for RMA if needed anyways. :) Thanks
