ASIC mining with free electricity

I live in a university dorm where I don't pay for power consumption, I only pay a flat fee that includes everything from water, electricity etc. So I thought it would be a good opportunity to mine bitcoins and earn a little extra on the side.

Last time I read about mining it was all about the graphics card, from what I understand that is no longer the case, ASIC cards are the future. So I'm wondering if it might be worth to invest in a mining rig with an ASIC card?
And if so, which cards can you recommend?

I'm pretty sure if they see a huge spike in energy consumption they'll soon find our why, and put a stop to it.

 

But if you go for a low powered solution you may get away with it. But won't make much profit.

Instead of wasting your University's money on mining just to get a discount on your bills, I suggest you instead use the free power to help in distributed computing. Say, Folding or Boinc.

 

This is much more in line with the purpose of a University: generate knowledge and help research.

You need about 8TH/s to make $15 a day. That will run you around $2,500. It is only getting harder to mine so you may never break even. NOT WORTH IT

I've not done any seriously mining, but the way I look at it is, you have costs, and income. When do you break even to make a profit? Costs can be up front in the purchasing of hardware, and also running costs. In this case, the second part is taken out which helps a lot, but you're still left with the hardware costs.

 

If you have some capable hardware already, no matter how slow, that can start earning right away. Buying new hardware will obviously require more consideration like SamStrecker already indicated. I haven't checked, but if that is right it seems it would be a longer term gamble if you even break even and make a profit.
