I am just getting started with Linux and I ran into my first bump. How do I install steam? I ran into an error whether I installed it from the App center or from the downloaded deb file. It said a certain file was missing, something 32

install from terminal :) i had a similar issue try from terminal and also try using a tar.gz if terminal wont work. If you want you can also install the packages it depends on, which is why its giving an error.

Its automatic, just press this button!

You'll have to be more precise than that, give us the whole error.

 

To get more information, open the terminal and try to install it from there (sudo apt-get install steam)

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

First off, what distro are you running and what are the specs of the machine?

 

And yeah, as the others have mentioned, it's always best to install steam through the terminal. Use the command Sauron posted.

Installing from the terminal will grab any dependencies you need and is greatly recomended over using the .deb file because of this.

 

sudo apt-get install steam

sudo apt-get install steam

 

I deeply recommend you to always install everything that you can though the terminal using apt-get.

Apt-get you take care of dependences, which installing directly though the .deb might not happen.

Just throwing it out there; this has been a known issue on Ubuntu using the Unity desktop, specifically for quite some time now. It's partly why I never recommend Unity to anyone. Instead, I highly recommend the Gnome desktop for Ubuntu. I don't know why this is, but I have never had any such issues running Gnome as I have with running Unity. I don't know enough about Linux to know why this is, but it's what I have run into several times. 

 

It can also be driver related. if you don't have the proper drivers (which steam looks for), it will not run.

Can confirm, Gnome is awesome, and new ubuntu gnome releases come out on the same day as new ubuntu releases

It's releasing today/tomorrow i think :P but i wonder if it would be better to wait for 16.04.01 for bugfixes, or will the initial release be stable enough?

Well I jumped on the upgrade from 14.04 to 15.04 when it first came out last year and there were zero issues. Been running Ubuntu Gnome on our HTPC for about 2 years now, totally rock-solid. :)
