Low Power NAS

I'm lookin to build or buy a lower power storage server for home use, but when specing things up the wattage seems to go ridiculously high. I know that the synology NAS is very low power but the price is just way over my budget. Any help is much appreciated :)

If you are measuring the wattage online those are over estimates. Your system will never get to that wattage. My system was supposed to use 600 watts, and i have a 450 Watt power supply and everything is fine xD. My suggestion for the most efficient parts would be the WD Green Drives as they are very ECO friendly.

Hope this helps :P

How are you computing power consumption?

A NAS in a home setting will likely be at idle consumption ~99% of the time.  Online "power supply" calculators tend to calculate for peak consumption.  So things aren't as bad as they seem.

as well as adding overhead,

buy a power supply with overhead, but the actual power consumption may not be that much (it might be from the wall due to efficiency and what not)

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

What would you reckon the peak load to be, for NAS use ie copying some files over to the computer. Would kind of wattage do you reckon that would use if I were using drives like WD Reds.
