.dat file?

My grandpa has given me hundreds of pictures that he would like to be made into a slideshow. The pictures are in the .dat fiile type and I think he got them off of a disc he made a while ago. I have a video software called power director 9 that can read these files, but whenever I drag them on to the time line, they are squished vertically. I've already tried to change the aspect ratio from 16:9 to 4:3, and if I look at the properties of the photos, it says that they are in 4:3. I don't know why it is doing this and need help.
