Boot Laptop On Monitor

I have a old laptop and I am wondering if there is a way to get it boot onto a vga monitor

WARNING!! THE THINGS I SAY ARE BASED OFF EXPERIENCE AND MIGHT NOT BE TOTALLY ACCURATE!!
