RX 5700 XT junction temperatures rocket to 90+ degrees from just being in a game menu

  • I’ve recently bought parts to build a brand new gaming PC, my problem is that my GPU (RX 5700 XT MSI MECH OC Edition) temperatures (specifically the junction temperatures) seem to rocket to 90 and above degrees: thus, causing the fans to ramp up to max as well.
  • If I’m on the desktop, browsing the web, watching videos, etc (light work) the GPU temps are what they should look like with a light load.
  • I’ve got a few theories to why this might be happening: driver issue or the BIOS needs an update
  • Also, when I’m playing Minecraft, I do see some stutters every now and then but the temps are normal (any suggestions to why that might be?) I don’t really need an answer for the last bit, but definitely the temps issue. Thanks!

What game's menu? Many games have implemented a frame rate cap of ~60fps when in the menu (Halo MCC, WOT, to name a couple), but many games do not do this. The game menu tends to be easy to render so with no limit it will run at many hundreds of FPS, maxing out either your GPU or CPU. Setting a global frame cap will resolve this.

The GPU Core voltage, at default should be max'ed out from the factory for the P3 State, which should be 1200mV. Lower the voltage into the 1100mV ~ 1150mV range should drop your temperatures by 10°C ~ 15°C. Most cards can run at a lower voltage.

 

Set up a custom fan curve; most cards have a conservative fan profile that max at around 40% ~ 50% fan speed. That should also help reduce temperatures but a little bit more

 

Do this all within the Radeon Software.

The game menu is Scrap Mechanic, it has to render a forest in the background

Cheers mate, I’ll give that a shot. If I do lower the voltage will that impact performance?

No, lower the voltage will not impact performance, given that the voltage is enough (e.g not too low so the GPU is now unstable).

You might get a small gain in performance, as the temperature is lower, and the GPU will automatically boost higher -- or maintain boost for longer.
