How often do EVGA power supplies fail?

Var_

Howdy folks,

About 3 weeks ago, my EVGA SuperNOVA G3 (550w) decided to off itself permanently. No fan spin, no power. I sent it to EVGA for an RMA, but still haven't gotten it back yet.

I bought the PSU from Canada Computers about 5 months ago, and had no issues up to this. I heard that EVGA was good for their power supplies but I guess I might have bought a defective one? I'm kinda upset because my old power supply (a Thermaltake smart series) worked for over 4 years. Are these power supplies known for this kind of stuff?

The G3 is a good PSU, no known issues with premature failing AFAIK.

EVGA doesn't actually make PSUs, they rebrand various models from different OEMs, so it's impossible to say how often they fail as a whole, you can only look at it on a per-model basis. Even comparing different wattages in the same line isn't really a good idea as the components can change and even the OEM and base design sometimes.

Failing within 5 months is definitely out of the norm, you got unlucky. The PSU comes with a 7 year warranty, so at the very least, EVGA expects it to last that long.

They usually fail once. And most often not damaging other components, but that isn't a norm.

If you're thinking on the RMA rates during warranty, those are low. It's a modified Leadex II platform from Super Flower (SF).

I didn't know that EVGA rebranded their PSUs. It appears that my power supply is actually a Super Flower PSU. Interesting.

For what it's worth, SuperFlower is generally a good OEM, I have one of their Leadex III Gold units in my PC (like companies that rebrand PSUs, can't really judge a brand as a whole because there's always outliers in terms of quality). The model they make that EVGA rebrand into the G3 is a good unit, premature failure shouldn't be common and in the event it does (like yours) it shouldn't take anything else out with it, which is one of the most important things for a PSU.

Most of the well known brands are actually re-branding PSUs, such as Corsair, from a wide range of OEMs. I believe Corsair has used SuperFlower before as well. Even the OEMs sometimes have their own OEMs for some of their units.

Corsair has never used Super Flower as an OEM.  And I don't even see that happening in the near future.

You are correct, just went and checked but they haven't. Thought I'd seen a unit that was from SuperFlower, but that's based on memory from years ago when I was more up to date with PSUs.
