Networking out of the way

Hey guys.

So a buddy and I are thinking about doing something with our network situation in our houses.

I've just bought my house last summer, an older one from the 70's.. (I live in Denmark)

I really don't like how my router looks or how it takes up space in the corner.. And the room it's in will eventually become the nursery..

So my idea is, and here is where I need your help, to put all the networking stuff in the attic. I can move the network cable from my IPS to the attic and place my router there. From there connect it to a switch.

From the switch I will run network cables to two hotspots (ubiquiti) in either ends of the house to maintain a stable wireless connection and I can run cables to my desktop, PS4 and smart TV and what not.

My main issue is that, due to living in Denmark. Which in weather terms can be rather similar to wisconsin or Canada.. Cold, lots of rain and wind.. How do I make sure that all the gear doesn't suffer from moisture

in the air..

I think I can handle any heat related problems by pulling air directly from the out side( it gets hot in the summer!) But I don't know how to deal with moisture in the air..

I plan on using passived cooled swith and router limiting moving parts as points of faliure..

I love to hear your thoughts on this...

Can you hide the networking stuff in a cabient or some enclosure, seems like a much better idea than the attic for me. Or put it in anouther room?

Have you measured how hot or cold it gets in the attic?

I would seriously consider google wifi. The mesh network is fantastic, I have used them with no issues at all. The switches, I use tplink. They are cheap and effective. I doubt there is any moisture issue either. As long as it doesn’t get wet, it should be fine.

I believe google WiFi pucks can even be used as WiFi to Ethernet devices which is convenient.

Your use case is basically what my parents setup is, works great. Two WiFi points and it’s great! A bunch of switches and it all works great.

I used a spray on water sealer on the PCB of one of the google WiFi pucks and it lives outside under a garage owning. It’s in LA, so only ~100 in summer and low 40’s in winter (F not C), and it’s been fine. It doesn’t get hit with direct water, but it is literally outside. The water sealer likely is helping keep it alive.
