Asus TUF Gaming VG259Q 24.5”

Sandeagle

Hello,

I am a fan of the channel and casual reader of this forum.

I recently came to conclusion that i want to upgrade my current main monitor to better suit my needs.

Little bit of background: I'm running 2x24" setup which is perfect for my desk and utilizing all my tasks. My main monitor is VE248H (Its 5 years old TN which actually never let me down). However, I decided to get something, that would perform better and fulfill my needs:
It should be IPS, 144Hz, 24-25" with good color reproduction, relatively fast-ish response time, and not much of typical problems (BLB, IPS Bleed, fuzziness, Dead Pixel possibility etc..). Im planning to use this monitor for gaming and video footage editing (including moderate color grading).

I came up with 3 monitors, that are available right now:
AOC 24G2U
Acer VG240Y Pbiip
Asus VG259Q

I discarded Acer right away: Too much negative reviews and my personal negative experience with this brand over last 15 years,

AOC on the other hand caught my attention because its "The monitor everyone is talking about", there are bazillion reviews and comments all over the internet. All the problems raise from divergence of statements i found. On paper, it has the best color reproduction of all 3 (108% of ARGB?) and overall good contrast for its price range. However, i saw many reviews calling out the panel itself for its lack of uniformity, BLB and horrible IPS bleed, friend of mine returned it without testing because of couple of dead pixels... The second concern was with the brand and all that "budget and affordable" sayings. Budget is good, but I'm not looking for budget option, there is just nothing to choose from.

Asus VG259Q is relatively new (just now getting into stores in my country, just a few pieces),  not many videos, reviews, comments on the internet and if so, only conflicting ones. Color is given, around 99% of sRGB (Which is fine, its till around 10% more than i have right now, but could be a bit more). Response time is better, no reports of bad BLB or horrible IPS. However I'm kinda worried about that onscreen filter. I read few comments about fuzziness that makes text "unreadable", the lack of custom profiles, the sRGB profile "can't be adjusted" etc..., Yet all of these comments cannot be confirmed, partially, because kinda few of them are coming from really unreliable sources ("friend told me", "i had to return it back 30 seconds after i received it")  i didn't see any deep reviews on this monitor, except for "display ninja" which i don't know anymore if i can use as reliable source, number of video reviews is shockingly low even today and people, which aresaying "i received one today", went all silent on other forums without single "Yup that's true / that's bs". I'm not even mad about the price, the Asus tax is just how it is and i hope its partially because of Quality Control

Now to put it into some perspective: My current monitor is 60Hz, TN, 88% sRGB, 1080p, without horrible display flaws, and readable clear text. I don't wanna step down even a bit from anything (except the response time which is 2ms to 3.7 ms is something i can really live with), i just want the same OR better results from every aspect of my monitor, if it can be adjusted, its fine, if it is fixed flaw, than its really no-go for me. As i said before, I'm not really on a budget here (doesn't mean i want to spent 3k on 24' monitor tho) but i really don't have much more options.

And of course TLDR version: Why on earth no one deeply reviewed Asus VG259Q yet? Is it that Bad/Good as only few sources suggest?

Hey Sandeagle. I was surprised to see your post because I have exactly the same list. Been looking day and night for about a week. My needs are similar to yours - gaming (as fast as possible, but with IPS because COLORS PLEASE!), video/photo editing + working with text.

I discarded Acer right away too - the reviews were saying about "settings are not saving" and some more bad stuff.

AOC - was my first choice (YouTube reviews), but I was terrified by reading comments and reviews about horrible light bleed and dead pixels were noticed in some reviews (a bit too much, if you ask me). I asked about the problem on the official AOC web-site and they answered that a new batch will be available this weekend (for them to test for "bugs" such as bleeding, etc). So I will contact them on Sunday or Monday again.

Asus VG259Q - was looking quite good (no bleed, FAST IPS panel) and I was excited and ready to buy it until I've read that stuff about fuzziness and blurry image because of some "filter" applied by ASUS on default... And I work with text a lot.

I don't have them in my local shop (small town, Russia), but I'm going to order AOC and ASUS to my local shop for "in real life testing" tomorrow and they should be here 26th-28th.

Until then let's discuss. Do you have any additional thoughts?

P.S there's one short review on YouTube - https://youtu.be/vsdSEttE83w - I'm going to ask the guy directly on discord right now.

And there's a review on Russian - https://youtu.be/oHauub6y6SQ

But he is quite casual. Good visual representation tho.
EDIT:
talked with a guy from the first review (just copy-pasted that you said about ASUS and that's what he's saying:
"To be honest it's not a problem I've had with mine. I'm wondering if it's because people aren't used to the slightly larger size with 1080p which would reduce pixel density a bit from a standard 23.8 or 24 inch monitor. But I've not had any blurry text issues. For me the monitor has been absolutely perfect".

Yup, thats almost exactly what i came to

I think this still apply

ips.png.2860b95ba308e7cfb753188d80ce6fcb.png

I did actually peak in AOC "booth" at Gamescom, where there was couple of units, and not a single panel looked the same, unfortunately... Flaws were visible even over the lighting... Problem is that if they actually made another "better" batch, and you would add up all the waiting for getting them in stock here (some people are still waiting for their current batch over a month now), i would say, it could take a while until i see it...

And for Asus, i just cant believe that i bought TN panel more than 5 years ago, for around $150, with more readable text than IPS for double the price now? Im quite prepared to buy one just for the looks, i also made the biggest shop in our country stock two of those, without product informations, so i might try a double return just to be sure....

Few more options only now but most of them have just deal breaking flaws in design or colour.

There are of course upcoming

Acer Nitro XV253Q X (240 Hz 24,5")

Acer Nitro XV253Q P (144 Hz 24,5")
and

Asus VG259QM  - 240Hz DisplayHDR™ 400 alternative to current one
but i cant see them arriving any time soon to be able to review them... and i am already afraid that they will share their flaws with their older brothers

However, its still a very sad period of time for 1080p 24" ips high refresh rate, and i am already afraid that i will have to jump 3 inches higher to get what want and need

Hey, I just got the monitor today, like you guys I was looking for some reviews or someone that would be willing to go in to detail about that fuzzyness on text
Im down for talking about the monitor and answering whatever you guys need to know.

About the text, out of the box is was pretty fuzzy. almost felt like I had to rub my eyes.
and all of the presets were horrible, I stuck with the racing one and calibrated it to my taste.
Regarding the fuzzy text, It was extremely noticeable in smaller fonts, but after setting Vivid Pixel to 25 (it goes in increments of 25 up to 100) the text is pretty much perfect.
I have no complains with the monitor, the motion is good and theres very little ips glow and blacklight bleed.
https://imgur.com/a/9vqiJ22 that shows the difference between 0-25-100, it almost looks like the photo was taken out of focus, but I took the pictures with a mirrorless camera mounted on tripod and set the focus manually so it wouldnt change, the camera moved a bit from pressing the shutter button, but it shouldnt matter, I double checked for focus.

In total I paid 350 for the monitor, Im mexican and I had to pay for custom fees, but for 279 I think the monitor is amazing.
I do have a singular stuck pixel near the bottom, but to be honest is only noticeable when the image is completely dark, and a spec of dust is a lot more noticeable than the stuck pixel itself.

just wanted to add a bit more.

Mag2, thank you for the effort. That was very helpful indeed!
I will check carefully with a programm when buying.
"spec of dust" you mean ON the monitor and not UNDER the screen?
yes, I've read that that can be the case (not on this particular model tho)

Yeah I checked the monitor with a flashlight, no dust under my screen.

Also should mention, I think the monitor is pretty dark with ELMB on, but I do play in a very bright room

LoL is my main game, I do play FPS as well, mainly playing Hunt showdown, My previous monitor wouldn't perform very well with dark scenes, I bought the VG259Q as a way to deal with that and im extremely pleased

Ok, so I've got mine today, after prolly 5 minutes of calibration i'm happy... no dead pixels, just a little bit of IPS glow, and text fixed by vivid pixel (i've don some reading, and VP is actually made for that - using lower ppi on larger display)...  I played a bit of doom, pubg, csgo, everything is great... gamma is bit lower but can be adjusted elsewhere... and i have to say i love those colours... I'm more than happy with it so far

I signed up to webpage just to say thanks. In this last post, are you talking about the ASUS VG259Q, right? Could you share your settings? Also, could you comment on (1) fuzziness and how easy it is to read text, and (2) if you are noticing some motion blur in games? After all, it is IPS panel, not TN.

Thanks

Hey, sorry for late reply,

Yes, im talking about ASUS VG259Q...

After month i have to say, i don't have any problems with it, like, none... I have my old TN panel sitting right next to it and to be fair, i think i have more problems reading from it right now. If you are used to have 24" - 25" monitor, then after a short adaptation time, ASUS VG259Q just feel crispier. With Vivid pixel cranked to 25 - 50 there should be noticeable difference...

I tested both HDMI and DP (for sync) and both are doing fine... (to be fair, DP needs a bit of different color correction, but it can be done by Control panel or monitor settings itself)...

Im using Racing Mode, because it has the most unlocked settings to tweak...

As color calibration and personal setting, it should be always up to you what you consider comfortable, for more precision work i would advise use simple calibration tool or if you have friend with calibration colorimeter which you can use, you can achieve some true sRGB values there...

For motion blur, there are few things you can crank up to your satisfaction, but out of the box, there is really not that much as i would expect from IPS!... However the motion blur is kinda tricky, if you gonna use it as your primary monitor, you should look for settings that are just OK, because there is adaptation process involved, when you need to get used to new settings. So if you get it just barely noticeable, after some time you wont notice it at all...

Im really satisfied with that monitor and to be honest, i was a bit disappointed with ASUS price fee at first, but im not regretting paying that price now. I hope that this experience is applicable for most of units not just for mine (i have never been lucky with panels, sil. lottery, etc.. and my Hardware RNG wasn't in my favor for most of the times, so i don't believe i received Unicorn Panel)

Cheers

S

Hey. I have taken interest in this monitor and would like to know how its going for you?

Also another question are you able to have G sync and ELMB on at the same time or is it one or the other?

Cheers

I'm quite late to the party but  this asus monitor is also currently one of the two choices i'm considering for a primary gaming/3D work monitor.
The other one is the Acer Predator XB253QGX

Just quickly touching on your ELMB+ Gsync question. Yes they can both be enable at the same time, which is a big selling point for this monitor. I've heard multiple reviewers say that so i'm pretty confident it can be done.

Has anyone had any experience with the acer monitor i mentioned ?
