Windows 10 1903 Update Help!

I'm trying to update my windows 10 to the 1903 update but nothing I try is working. I don't understand what's going on because it's running fine on the 1803 update. To begin with the update would get to 40-45% then the PC would freeze. After a few troubleshooting steps it would reach 79% then freeze. Few more troubleshooting steps and it would freeze after restarting and reaching the 'working on update' screen. I've done some searching to try and fix the problem but nothing is working, here's what I've done so far:

  • Uninstalled all applications I hardly ever use
  • Run the troubleshooter to detect errors with windows updater (fixed nothing)
  • Defragment all drives in my system (0% fragmented)
  • Scanned drives for failures (100% verified)
  • Reinstall display drivers
  • Remove all USB devices except the keyboard and mouse
  • Check BIOS version (already at most recent)
  • Check if there's enough space on the boot drive (there is plenty)

I've completely run out of ideas of what to do to fix it, is something in my system not compatible with the update?

Specs:

AMD FX8350

Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0

8GB DDR3 1600MHz

Geforce GTX 1060 3GB

Windows 10 Pro

Give this a try: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

It will download the latest build and update your system to it. You can choose to keep all your settings and data or to do a clean install.

Just download, open then accept the terms and select the "Upgrade this PC now" option and wait.

Make sure to quote or tag people, so they get notified.

Thanks for the reply, do you mean I should use the 'Update Now' or the tool?

i've got to 27% and hangs about 2 hours, fortunately it continued.

i have r5 1600, so looking at your specs, you may have to wait longer.

this is a common issue.

Why not just do a fresh install with the latest build like @Cyberspirit suggested.

The tool re-downloads windows completely so, that's probably a better option if you have trouble with the built-in updater.

When you say hang what do you mean? Mine completely freezes, mouse doesn't move, keyboard doesn't respond.

If I use the tool will I still be given the upgrade this PC option you mentioned?

yes, there's no mouse or keyboard interaction in the update screen anyway.

Yes, right after you accept the terms and all that it will ask you if you want to Update it now or, create an ISO to put onto a USB stick.

So everything was going fine until it started installing and it's frozen at 5% completion, do I just wait and hope?

At this point, either your current installation is borked or, your drive is failing. Have you checked S.M.A.R.T.? You can get something like CrystalDiskInfo that tells you how your drive is doing.

Is it safe at this point to hard reset the PC? Also I don't think the drive is failing because when it reverts back to 1803, I was able to install display drivers again

Edit: I hard reset the PC and ran the command 'wmic diskdrive get status' and everything came back okay

Just to add my 50cts. I had this problem with any W10 upgrade. Since 1809 seemed so bad in the reviews I just left my systems on 1803. Now the 1903 update has many reasons to not work (seemingly) and flushed out important drivers. Until....I decided to upgrade from USB without an internet connection.

Worked like a charm.

Did the upgrade work yet? You can check logs by typing "event viewer" in the windows search bar. And checking under system

Nope nothing has worked, my brother got an upgrade recently so he's giving me his old ryzen which he had no problem doing the update with.
