Dell XPS or Dell G5

Hi!!

I'm shopping for a laptop at Dell seeing they have a nice 12% off right now.

I'm not sure if I should go for a Dell G5 with the new RTX2060 or for the more portable and sleek design of the XPS with a 1050TI

I think the performance of the G5 in games will be huge increase over the XPS. However, I do have a desktop where I will play most of my games on and I am mainly buying the laptop for travel / work.

Another difference is the screens. The G5 is equipped with a 1080p IPS (60hz? though 144hz is advertised I can't find the option) 300 nits and the XPS is equipped with a 1080p (60hz?) 400nits with 100%sRGB. (I thought you could go with a 4k upgrade but I can't find it)

What do you guys suggest? Portability vs performance?

I have the dell 7577, kind of like the g5, to game at my girlfriends home and at home I had my desktop but now we've moved in toghether I regret I did get a laptop this heavily focused on gaming. The battery life sucks (it's 4k display a gtx1060 and an i7 7700hq). I still use it for programming and having 16gb ram and and the i7 7700HQ handles far cry 5 and ac:odyssey better than my desktop i5 6600k so it has it's advantages until you have to go somewhere you can't plug it in. It only has a 45mins - 1h of battery life.

So for me portability with the possibility of gaming is better, you'll have to make that out for yourself.

Not limited to those 2 options but they do seem very nice!

I noticed that only the most expansive G5 with RTX2070 Max q has a 144hz display.

At the same price the Alienware M15 comes in with the same CPU but with a RTX2060 and 144hz display. I do think the Alienware has a better cooling solution and a more premium build quality. Might be faster then the RTX2070 because of the better cooling solution isn't it?

Difficult decision :(

I would go with the G5 as the XPS 15 is going to be refreshed soon. The G5 would serve you better when you do plan to game on the go and comes in either Black or White colors.

When configuring it, choose "Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut + Fujipoly Extreme Thermal pads" to mitigate any overheating issues.

Custom Built Dell G5 15 5590 - 15.6" FHD 144Hz - i7-8750H - RTX 2060

Bear in mind though it has  60WHr battery but with the XPS 15 you can choose upto a 97WHr battery which would last much longer if that's something you care about. See the XPS 15 models here: Dell XPS 15

if out of these two, I would get the G5.

I've heard too many problems with the latest XPS 15 and I'm willing to comprise weight for performance.

Where are you from? Budget? Usage? Any preference on weight and battery life?

Im from the Netherlands,

My budget is about 1500 euro's. Should be doable with the 15% discount code I have (sadly didn't stack with the 12% off from earlier this week)

I'd like to have a good balance between both battery life and weight.

I'm not a MacOS fan at all but I really like my Macbook Pro 13inch that I have for my job. (have to return it in April) and I am really charmed by its size/weight.

So in general I would love a lightweight laptop that can survive internet browsing for about 6-8 hours on battery and can still get good fps in games when I do decide to play some on it. And not to forget I am a hardware enthousiast, I would probably sacrifice elegance for performance. Probably why I was looking into the G5 in the first place :)

@Ultra Male

I don't think Dell Netherlands gives me this option, that would have been amazing though!

Honestly your options are quite limited unless you're fine with lower end GPU like 1050TI Max-Q:

AW m15 90Wh - heatsink and airflow issues

Dell G5 5590 - no CPU power limit while GPU is under load - causing overheating. Airflow issue

I would be fine with a 1050TI if its a real portable laptop (think macbook pro / Huawei matebook or XPS) otherwhise I am not really willing to lose on graphics horsepower.
