I was fortunate to get in my possession 7, 8TB SAS drives that I would like to utilize in a home data storage server project I'm planning. I'm going to use an old dell precision 3630 that i got still new in box plus some minor upgrades for the project and I want to connect 3 of the SAS drives for a raid 1 set up in windows server and keep the other 4 drives as spares. The thing is, with the SAS drives I don't know where i would even start in getting to connect them to an ordinary desktop. I would like to utilize their full duplex ability and rated 12Gb/spec speeds even thought its super overkill. (I mainly want to expose myself to the technology first hand and learn about it more). To my knowledge i would need a PCIe expansion card to do that but will any work? Also how what kind of connector would i use? All I know is I'll need a SFF-8482 connector for the drive end. More insight would be appreciated, I don't mind buying expansion cards or cables. Thank you.

We purchased a new Dell PowerEdge R250 server for one of our business customers. In that new server is a 1TB SSD with no OS installed. They currently own a 10+ year old Dell PowerEdge T320 with Windows Server 2019 Essentials installed and activated. We have created a Virtual Hard Disk using Disk2vhd and ultimately want to spin up that VM on the hard drive in the new server. What kind of host OS needs to be installed to run the VHD made from the previous server's hard drive? Can it be activated with the same license key as the guest OS (the one activated in the VHD that was created from the previous server's hard drive)? If not, and we only get to migrate the activation key from the previous server's hard drive to be used in the guest OS on the new hard drive, does that mean we have to pay for another activation key for the host OS on the new hard drive?

Hi, first time poster, long time viewer coming for advice. Backstory: I have decided to make myself a fully virtual Windows Server 2022 lab with HA, Clustering, Backups, File Server, and all that, maybe even use it as a NAS of sorts (yea, I know, Linux is probably better suited for servers but I'm one of those people that get to work in full Windows environments at work and having a lab with a similar setup to learn some more or test things out would be great). Issues: My constraint is physical space - I can't dedicate any more space for another PC, but I already have an HTPC in the house. The problem list / requirements: I want to run a bare metal hypervisor (preferrably Hyper-V, but I could tolerate VMware if what I'm looking for is not possible on Hyper-V) On that hypervisor I want to run one VM for the WinSrv lab and one VM for the HTPC Win10/11 I want the HTPC system to be easily accessible through the connected keyboard, mouse, and display in such a way, that if my girlfriend were to go watch Netflix in the living room, she wouldn't even notice that she's doing that on a VM. I want the whole setup to be as minimal in maintenance as possible. I've got enough administrative overhead in my life, and I really don't need the whole HTPC/LAB thing to become a "pool water-cooling project" or "living room audio project" of my house if possible The question: How do I even do that? I was wondering if it was possible to give the HTPC VM a dedicated physical HDMI port and USB ports so the physical computer will just output to the TV by default. Is that possible? Do any of you have experience with running that kind of setup? Is a dedicated GPU required then, or can I get by using an iGPU on a Ryzen 5700G? Is there something obvious I'm not taking into account here, or maybe a better, faster and easier solution? All help would be greatly appreciated

So I have a windows server 2019 on a NUC and a windows 10 pro VM on hyper-v on the server. I domain joined the client computer to the domain and I have made 3x accounts on the AD and made 2x groups called economy and market. I made a folder named testfolder and in that folder I made economyfiles and marketfles. I then made permissions for market and economy to see the testfolder and only for economy to read the marketfile and market can read/write and vice versa. But when i try to share the testfolder and sign in with a client account I can only see the testfolder and not the files inside the testfolder. Any ideas? Both are on the same local network. I cant add a server aswell. When i go to All servers and go to manage and click on add server and type in the server name "test" and select that its says target comuter not accessible. I dont know why. I mean do you really need to have a windows server version to add as a server? If you are working in a company how is that going to work if you cant add client computers? And i can share the files inside the testfolder but they wont be inside the testfolder when i check the client account and the permissions i had set doesnt work. I can still write in a economy if the account is a member of market. PS: when i share files it says to select the server or computer and i only have the windows server but if the client VM is on the windows server should it matter? And if it matters how can I add the client VM so I can select it wen I share files in server manager?

Im having alot of trouble installing windows server to my Dell r715 server and I feel very stupid at this point. I did format a partition of my drive as FAT32 because it told me it had to be that way, but when i try to install it its telling me it needs NTFS? Can it be the volume is too small? It is 28.8 GB, google says the minimum disk space is 32GB, but I am not getting a error message telling me its too small, and FAT32 doesnt go over 32GB?

I'm wondering if would be possible and viable (stable) to create a virtual machine that runs Windows Server 2019 (or 2022) on a Linux server. My goal is to avoid the higher licence cost of the Windows Server Standard Edition versus the Essentials Editon.I need the remote connection feature that is only available in the Standard Edition. My idea would be the user connect to a Linux and them use Windows on a Virtual Machine. Also how much hardware power I would need? Some context and clarification: This server is for my father small accounting firm with 9 employees. I'm asking this because he needs a new server. There isn't a lot of remote working been done in his company right now, but after the pandemic he would like to have this option. So I would prefer to avoid make he pay for a premium for a feature that will see little use. I live in a country where currency conversion rates, import taxes and the poor economic environment makes the price for a multiple windows licence is prohibitive. It seems that Microsoft import all its licences because even if you take currency conversion into account the price should be half of what is compared with the US. He needs Windows because the software used in his company doesn't run on Linux, but is the best on the market (so no switching). And he uses a server because people of different departments are needed to complete the accounting of every client. I'm no pro IT and we are willing to hire a pro, I just want to know what are my options before hire someone. I already talk to a small IT firm, but they seem more interested in getting me a Windows Server and selling me a monthly tech support plan. So any help would be appreciated.

Hello, our workplace has a server with Server 2019 Datacenter and we are in need of limiting RAM usage for a couple of services of an application that's running on it. When we did some research, we came across some old posts of people suggesting Windows System Resource Manager. Some further digging on this we came across this in the Microsoft website : Windows System Resource Manager (WSRM) is deprecated beginning with Windows Server® 2012. and also noticed that its not available for install in Server manager. I did some look around & did not see any successor program to Windows System Resource Manager. Is there anything else built in to Windows server that I can get my task done?

I am trying to find a PCIe to Sata Raid controller/card that can do RAID 5, for now, for my home windows server 2012. Not very familiar with what PCIe to SATA raid cards are out there and while I know I could do RAID over motherboard SATA connectors, I have heard that RAID cards are better than doing software raid through the motherboard. I don't want to spend over $1k if possible and at the most $500 or less maybe? Let me know and thans in advance!

I'm running a windows server VM on proxmox and it randomly shuts down. The last one was the first one I was actually there to witness but it's happened a total of 6 times: (this is filtered to just show the unexpected shutdowns) When I go back in the log and look around the time the shutdown occurs there's nothing useful. The only thing in the log before it happens in a bunch of 'service x entered running state' & the 1 warning that there was 'No valid response received from manually configured peer time.windows.com' This is basically a fresh install of Server 2022, only thing running was some HFS servers, a discord bot, & a minecraft server. All of which have ran before without issue on the old install of Server 2019.

Hello, not sure if I’m in the right plus but I need some help. I have a home lab with a Windows Server 2012 R2 running AD server and file share. I am experimenting with adding my sisters computer (at my parents) house to the domain. My job using Cisco AnyConnect VPN but that is a paid option but open to that. Is there any Windows server based options that I would add a computer to my domain that is not in my home?

I am currently running a Minecraft server network on a computer with ports 25565, 25504, and 25563. I can join the server from the ipv4 address on the computer but, with all the necessary ports enabled (Inbound & Outbound) I can't connect from other computers. I have tried uninstalling my security software and disabling the windows firewall.' I have disabled IPv6 Stack as recommended in the now inactive, https://linustechtips.com/topic/1483006-minecraft-server-firewall-port-forward-issue/#comment-15763311

Hi, i need some advice. for a few years now i have been running a Windows Server 2012 R2 Server at my home and i setup a domain and sense i have been living with it the server has become a daily part of my life in terms of setting up my computers and a bunch of other things. it runs my DHCP, DNC, WDS, Active Domain, etc. i know i wont beable to keep the server for ever even though i would love to i know i wont beable to and i need some advice in terms of what would i need to do if i had to switch to a workgroup again? i need to find another solution for lots of things on my server. DHCP, DNS, already have a backup solution for my Deployment and i would just use Fog Server as my replacement as it is the next best thing to WDS and MDT. i can use an old computer for my DHCP and DNS thats not really a problem. any advice for in the future when this happens?

Hi everyone, I'm probing for best practices setting up a VPN connection from 5 remotes workstations to a home office server. Each remote workstation is located in a verterinarian van that travels to clients. There will also be 5 clients at the home office that will connect locally to the server, or perhaps with VPN in some circumstances. So far, I'm going to use Active Directory to implement user and computer accounts for the van workstations and local workstations. I will implement VPN. I always figure many minds are better than one, so I am probing for anything perhaps I haven't thought of, and am seeking advice on the situation. Nothing exists yet. All we have is empty office space and 1 van. He wants scalability for 5 vans in total and his home office. What are your thoughts? Thank you.

If cost is no object, (i.e. MSDN for example) and if most of my clients are running Windows 10, would you recommend using Windows Server 2016 on a NAS versus the other options, such as FreeNAS? If so, what version of Windows Server 2016 would you recommend? (This is just a hypothetical question, although I might build a NAS in the future using this recommendation.)

OK so I'd like to start off by saying I'm just starting to look at my options here I would like to get a clear understanding of things before I start actually doing anything with our network... Main Server Specs: (08SRV) Dell PowerEdge T320 OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard CPU: Intel Xeon E5 2420 @ 1.90GHz RAM: 16GB Triple-Channel DDR3 @ 666MHz RAID CONTROLLER: Dell PERC H310 (RAID 1) HDD: 2 x 1TB SCSI Backup Server Specs: (WS2012) HP ProLiant ML350 G6 OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard CPU: Intel Xeon L5506 @ 2.13GHz RAM: 6GB Triple-Channel DDR3 @ 399MHz Raid Controller: P410i Controller HDD: 2 x 136GB SCSI - 2 x 1TB SCSI Computer Specs: Custom Computers OS: Windows 10 Pro x64 CPU: Intel Core i5 7600 @ 3.80Ghz RAM: 16GB Dual-Channel DDR4 @ 1196MHz HDD: Samsung 850 EVO SSD (500GB) So I'm looking at upgrading the main server to 2016 Standard from 2008 R2 Standard. I have a copy of 2016 that is not being used at the moment and would like to make use of it but I am not sure if it's going to be worth the upgrade for this hardware for one and not sure if 2016 is a good upgrade path. We are a small office that use the Server for Active Directory (Domain logins), DHCP, DNS, File Shares, Printer Sharing, and IIS Just looking to see what peoples thoughts are on the situation. Thanks, Ryan
