  1. So... I did a thing. Story begins with me, guy who likes DIY but can't afford a proper workshop. Or just don't have a space. ANYWAYS, I was browsing eBay and found a TR4 beQuiet Dark Rock Pro for £20. I thought, hell, it's really cheap. So I decided to buy it. I forgot about it until it actually show up at my doorstep. It is MASSIVE! I loved every single thing about this monstrosity. I had to mount it. But is it even possible? By googling through the vast internet I found like 2 threads about it. 1 says that it's impossible, the other one that you have to be magician with machine working. I'm not... ... but I have Dremel. It all started with checking the holes on AM4 motherboard. Since I'm lazy and I don't have any laying around, only in my main rig, I decided that I'll get measurements from the stock cooler. TR4 Dark Rock has one arm for mounting screws longer than the other. So first one, I just needed to drill holes through it at the ends. No big deal (spoiler alert - massive deal). https://imgur.com/DaGlVUX The other one, smaller, all I needed is simply make holes bigger. Maybe with a simple drill I'll be able to do it? (no.) https://imgur.com/SCQEo8D Now, the main arm needs an extra hole to make sure it will align with holes. (Impossibru. At least without any super strong/special tools) https://imgur.com/jDh2i1I So... Let's do it. First, I have couple of drills that might work. Decided to give it a try. https://imgur.com/SsEN6uW After 10 minutes, all I saw was just a small scratch. I gave up. https://imgur.com/rr4aem8 If I don't have a specific drill, maybe I can just do a hole with a Dremel? It won't look good, but it doesn't have to. It has to be big enough to fit a screw through. Try the first cut: https://imgur.com/RCIa6QR So after incredibly professional job from me, (and destroying one Dremel blade https://imgur.com/m5qkGeq) it came out like that: https://imgur.com/rA5EY5y Oh, so professional! https://imgur.com/Rg1qe6S But wait. I'm not going to leave it all silver and shiny. I need to be professional. https://imgur.com/9DExjzF Brilliant. Now, let's try if the screw will fit: https://imgur.com/Eoyqlma Surprisingly well. But I still have two more parts to destro... I mean, adjust. If I don't have a drill and I can't really do a star again... https://imgur.com/se9qWCX Meh, I'll be fine. And final fit: https://imgur.com/w5Vcj6t Holly crap, it might actually work. Or is it? Well, it's time to check. https://imgur.com/dA19YUP ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After disassembly of Noctua cooler I did a test fit of my better, improved mounting brackets... https://imgur.com/DdBandH It did not work. I mean, it kinda worked. Long one was surprisingly tough, it could easily hold the cooler, but the small one, I cut too short. What now?! Wait... what about that Noctua bracket? Might work... https://imgur.com/9IvmIBv Well, from test fit I learned two things. 1) I didn't had to get any holes to make it work, 2) 1 screw less never killed anyone (did you ever disassembly laptop and had zero screws left? I didn't, yet they all work). So as a test was positive, I decided to check first without thermal paste. Let's check. https://imgur.com/SyFJYib https://imgur.com/YpxsxmY https://imgur.com/5PL0zpX https://imgur.com/9QNY3is It... works. I think. I need to tight the screws way too much that I like, but it does fit. I can lift a mobo by the cooler, and it has NO movement anywhere. So I'm happy. On this photo, you can even see how IHS makes contact with cooling plate: https://imgur.com/xVXU03R ... or at least you could see, if I had better camera. Redmi Note 8 is not the best for it. Back to DIY. I decided that it takes WAY too much time now, I need to mount it. If I break MOBO, I'll break it, but I need to make it work. So: https://imgur.com/waFEFe1 https://imgur.com/EiWAPC7 (here you can see it makes a decent contact with IHS) https://imgur.com/0yNlW32 (mounted middle fan and front) AAAAAAAAAND! https://imgur.com/NPbhDIG YES! But wait. It did not post... (because I'm an idiot and didn't fastened PCIe extension properly) 2nd try, and... https://imgur.com/arZJKrH SUCCESS! https://imgur.com/Y6tEFF9 Temps not bad... OCCT stress test, after ~ 6 minutes it stabilized around 67*C and stayed there: https://imgur.com/tvBTQxr So after all. The main questions: 1) Is it better than previous cooler? Yes, by 10*C. 2) Was it worth it? No. 3) Am I proud of it? Hell yes. 4) Would I do it again? Yes. 5) Do I recommend it? NO. It was pain in the ASS to do it, but I had fun. And learned that I need to buy some new tools. Hope you enjoyed it. I know I did.
  2. SO! I won auction on ebay. I bought beQuiet Dark Rock Pro TR4 for... £20. With mounting kit + 2 fans. The problem is, I got AM4 mobo with 1700x on it. And it gets me thinking... Did anyone tried to mount TR4 cooler on AM4? Is it even possible? Should I go with the flow and just mash it together, or it's not worth it? Couldn't find any info on the internets, so maybe anyone else tried that before? Technically, from what I see, only the heat plate is bigger, and I think it could be possible...
  3. on the gigabyte pro x399 motherboared they is 1 8 pin and 1 4 pin are both required for the system to work i wont be doing any overclocking the reason i am asking this is because i have a pretty much brand new thermaltake 700w psu. thanks.
  4. I am shopping for a Threadripper CPU without hitting the $1000 price bracket. I am looking for feedback since there is a sale going on. This is not an upgrade from a previous TR4 build, this is a new build.
  5. Hey, I'm trying to decide between the Asus ROG Zenith Extreme X399 and the ASRock X399 Professional Gaming. Could someone please give me a nice comparison between the two. My main focus for my build is creating a system that will stream the internet with no bottlenecks, something great for photo editing, and the occasional game. I'd love to have some fast USB support since I will be transferring tons of files. I'm looking to drop in a TR 2950X. I will be going with a custom water loop. Currently looking at two kits of G.Skill Trident Z 32 GB Ram and 2x1T MVME M.2 (haven't decided which type). I will be going with a GTX 1080 ti GPU.
  6. for some context, i recently bought 3 broken threadripper motherboards with the hope that i could repair them and use one in a project. one of the boards is badly damaged and i am intending to use as a donor board. the board in the pic isnt as bad. i have spent about an hour straitening bent pins, and now the only thing i can see wrong is the missing item, which i belive is a capacitor. each of them is about 2-3mm long. i have looked into micro soldering and think it would be possible to de-solder a cap from the donor board and put it on the board which is in better shape. problem is im a complete noob and have very little electrical knowledge and 0 micro soldering experience. I would like to know if the cap is even necessary, as im aware sometimes extra components are used for redundancy. if i do need to fix it, would this tool be enough(TS100): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MDTO6X7/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=rossmanngroup-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01MDTO6X7&linkId=2d7c13ceaf8725fb1aadce13d12a16c3 i saw that Louis Rossman recommended it, and it is fairly inexpensive compared to the alternatives. I would also be interested to hear about solder/flux recommendations for this project, as its another area i know very little about. any info, advice, recommendations or tips would be really helpful to me. thank you for reading.
  7. Hi Guys, Does anyone who have build threatripper build knows what rams are capable with the X399 DESIGNARE EX motherboard? I saw the Ram list but want to ask persons who have experience building, cause i know at times listed Rams dont work.
  8. Hey guys! I have to upgrade my workstation and I really need some help! My main use is for 3D modeling and rendering. I work with really heavy scenes and I use both CPU and GPU renderers. My computer remains on load almost 24/7 and I need something really reliable. I want to focus this upgrade on a new CPU. I’m thinking about a 2950x but It’s extremely hard to find a build to use as guide and I’m really no expert at all. What I need: -CPU: 2950x (Or other?) -Mobo that suports 4 GPU -Mem: at least 64gb but with possibility to upgrade to 128gb next year. -a reliable cooling system (water or air) but that allow me to use all the pci-e slots. Budget: 2000 Euros ideally, 2500 euros max. My my current build is: CPU: i7 4930K Mobo: ASRock X79 Extreme 6 Mem: 48Gb DDR3 1600mhz (6x8) GPU: 2 x TITAN X (maxwell) + 1x GTX1080 PSU: Corsair Aix1200i Case: Corsair 750D Obsidian Airflow Edition Thank you!!!
  9. I'm trying to figure out if a Tr4(threadripper) water block would fit on a sp3(Epyc) building a dual CPU diy server for reasons and I want to see if. can make it basically silent so basically I want to find out if any water block can fit on the sp3 socket
  10. To make this a Bootable RAID you will need a UEFI with the support and drives for windows. It will support up to 10 drives in RAID with RAID versions 1,0,10 sadly 5 is not supported. In Der8auers video (That I hope comes back soon) shows a near perfect scaling of 8 960 Pro drives, with it hitting just over 27 GB/s reads. And remember this is a free feature. http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/NVMe-RAID-Support-for-the-AMD-Ryzen-Threadripper-platform.aspx https://www.anandtech.com/show/11892/amd-launches-nvme-raid-support-for-ryzen-threadripper-platform @done12many2 now that its official, yes it is bootable, you need a BIO update and a windows driver. supports up to 10 drives which is nice. It seems this update my break old raid setups though. here is Der8auers video a the last topic about the video. EDIT: Here is PCPer test of X299 VROC and X270 RST, PCPer is testing X399 as we speak. In sort they got 13.2~GB/s off of 4 960Pros when X399 got 27+GB/s on 8 drives (theoretical 13.5 with 4) X299 can only do 4 drives in a bootable RAID vs 10 on X399 https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Storage/Intel-VROC-Tested-X299-VROC-vs-Z270-RST-Quad-Optane-vs-Quad-960-PRO
  11. Hi! This is my first time posting, sorry for a long and somewhat badly written post (since English is not my native language). So I recently brought home my brand new threadripper hardware from the computer store I work at. The following specs: AMD Threadripper 1950x Asus x399-A 4x16GB DDR4 2800mhz Corsair Vengance LPX 2x Asus ROG STRIX 1080 Ti H100i V2 Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SATA SSD Corsair RM850x Built it all on my test bench just to fire it up and realize it won't post, no boot screen, no nothing. Everething is starting up with fans spinning, but then it won't continue. I've gotten several different error codes during trouble shooting, mostly D0: "CPU Initialization Error", D1: "System Agent Initialization Error". I've also seen the q-code monitor stop at AD: "Ready to Boot" and 08: "System Agent Initialization after Microcode loading" only to stay there without going any further. What's been constant though is that the little orange DRAM-light lights up, every single time since day one. Naturally I started troubleshooting what I could from home, testing the ram in my x99 build, every dimm seems fine. Testing with different PSUs (CX600, RM650x as well as another RM850x), no difference. Updated BIOS, nothing. Cleared CMOS, all that did was that the system will restart after failing to boot instead of just staying on. Tested other ram kits (Vengance LPX 2400mhz & Dominator Platinum 2666mhz, the latter even being exact stated as supported by the motherboard) One of the GPUs, the other one, a GTX 660 and a GTX 1080. No luck. So I gave up for the day. Next day I got another mobo from work, still no luck. A couple of days later I got another CPU from work as well and this is when it gets really weird. Still the exact same problem, DRAM light and error codes. So at this point I basically have a build where no parts are the same that I got from the beginning, but the error is constant. Am I stupid? Have I missed something obvious? It can't be RAM, they work. Can't be PSU, it works. I feel like it's extremely unlikely to be CPU or mobo because then I would have gotten to of them with the exact same problem. None of the mobo's have any bent pins and none of the CPU's seem damaged. So that's where I am at. Any thoughts? Kind regards Joel

Well, this is certainly interesting. https://www.anandtech.com/show/12711/german-it-distributor-publishes-amd-intel-roadmaps-z490-z390-8core-cfl-in-q4 Obviously, someone at the German IT company messed up, but it's great fodder for us. Yet, this is also pretty strange. First, since it's on two slides, AMD is releasing a Z490 Chipset, we've never heard of it before and no one yet knows what it means. Besides being a poke in the Intel marketing department's eye. Built in wifi, more USB ports and 10 Gbit Ethernet? No clue! We can speculate on that. We have our first real dates for the Threadripper refresh, though it appears we're not getting a new chipset with it. (Probably a good thing.) I'm going to guess 4.5 Ghz max boost on a single core, give they are the binned chips. In contrast, there's no mention of the Cascade Lake-X parts, which would be the X299 refresh. That's been expected for Q3'18 for a bit, so that seems strange. As Anandtech mentioned, it might just not be on this specific company's timeline. Also in Intel news, Z390 is coming far earlier than the 8 core Coffee Lake part, which seems on track for the actual launch of the 8700k in December. (8700k was a near paper launch with full availability in December 2017, which puts the 8780k(?) on track for the same window.) It's going to be a weird summer of Motherboard reviews with no associated new CPUs to test in them.
  13. So if you were going to build a 4 GPU X16 slot system, would you go with an x99 or Threadripper? I will need x16 slots, but only x8 lanes. Right now I see the x399 boards all have the hardware I need, and there are lots of x99 boards that meet the spec as well. The cost is where things get interesting - 1900X $550. X399 board $400. Total - About $1000 delivered 6850K (Remember lanes and slots are important here, not cores) $350. x99 4 slot board about $300. Total - 800 delivered. So is the $200 savings worth it? On paper the systems are equivalent. Both have m.2, 4 channel memory and a bunch of other stuff that is nice, but not a deal breaker. The system would primarily be used for Folding @ Home and other distributed projects so 128 GB of Ram and RGB headers don't matter. Threadripper seems nice, but it has more PCIE lanes than it's hardware can use which seem like a waste to me. If I ever wanted to upgrade I guess X399 is the way to go since x99 is a dead end now right? That's why the formerly $600 6850K is now $350. Thoughts and advice are appreciated. Cheers!
  14. This is amazing... I always wanted two of these together (TR - i9) and looks like that day is coming! I really really hope this thing becomes real TR4 socket looks very, very ugly by the way

Where the temperature reached 95c, the system would shut down and therefore the test sequence ended (hence no results). The Enermax cooler did brilliantly, being rated at 500w+ it handles anything i can throw at it with ease, at 4.2GHz the CPU was reportedly kicking out almost 400w of heat according to HWinfo64, at no point were temperatures uncomfortable with this cooler, the radiator did not even get noticeably warm to the touch,
  16. So Ive built 2 systems within a few months, I guess I’ll put both the pcs in here since the actual “setup” didn’t change much. Only the pc’s! PC #1: CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 with a 4.0ghz OC CPU Cooler: Cooler Master ML240 (has stock AMD cooler in one of the pictures) GPU: Gigabyte rx580 8gb Mobo: Gigabyte B450m RAM: 16gb GSkill ripjaws @3000mhz SSD: Samsung 970 evo 500gb PSU: Seasonic 620w evo 2 Case: Cooler Master Q300L Fans: 2 cooler master sickleflow and 3 Corsair red LED. Speakers: Logitech Z313 (I think I’ll double check) When I started making videos, I started seeing how I’d appreciate a bump in core/thread count and so I started planning my Threadripper build! PC #2: CPU: AMD Threadripper 1900x @stock speed CPU Cooler: Cooler Master ML360TR GPU: XFX RX590 OC Mobo: ASROCK Taichi X399 RAM: 32GB hyperX @3000mhz SSD: Samsung 970 evo 250gb (will be buying more m.2 drives very soon) HDD: (2) WD blue 1TB 7200rpm PSU: EVGA 1200w P2 Case: Lian-Li PC-011 Air Fans: 3 cooler master sickle flow, 3 Corsair LED, 2 Lian-Li stock fans. (This is something else I’ll be changing soon. Mismatched fans drive me nuts). This is my pc I use for gaming/recording/editing, it’s on the budget side of TR4, but I could (and will) drop in a 1950x or something later down the line with a more powerful GPU and be set!
  17. I got all i need now for my new build, just the motherboard is missing.... Anyone got some info that i missed, or something, like new motherboards otw spring-19? I want this; ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme, Socket-TR4. Dont ask why, lol. And no i dont have much money (maybe cause i use em all on pc parts..) Anyhow this MB is Fu..in expencive, so i kinda hope that maaaybe price will drop in near future due to new products on marked, but noone is talking bout MB's. Lot of ppl talk bout cpu's ram etc etc (thank god for ram is finaly droping!). Buut is it possible i can get my MB cheaper if i wait a little? Or maybe a new and better MB is otw? Thx and happy new year!
  18. So, on the new year i bought a Threadripper 1950X & accompanying Aorus X399 Gaming 7 motherboard. I initially had an Asetek style cooler, which was simply unable to get the heat away from the CPU (because it's got a small coldplate). So i upgraded coolers and bought a Liqtech TR4 360mm cooler. Temps were insanely low! 4 months on however, temps are now at the point where i'm concerned about either the cooler or the CPU. Using my 24/7 OC setting, i tried Prime95, temps quickly shot up and the system ended up shutting off for overheat protection! Odd, considering i used to be able to bench easily at 4.2ghz 1.4v. I reverted clocks back to stock (and reflashed the BIOS just in case), and the temps were still high, reaching the temp throttle point of 68c within seconds (even my Asetek one didnt perform that badly!) Loading up a reference point overclock setting (3.75ghz @ 1.275v), i was getting 86c, considering i originally was getting 58c at that same setting when originally fitted, that's a 30c increase! WHAT?! Temps are ~30c higher than when orgiginally fitted? I immediately stopped the test and reapplied paste, oddly the paste had turned a slight tinted green colour (the enermax stuff that came with the cooler), but was otherwise still similar to how it was when applied. I reapplied the same stuff in the same method (4 x 1 inch stripes where the dies are) and got exactly the same results, obviously the green tinting had nothing to do with it. Is my cooler failing or is it my CPU? or something else? FYI readings from original and current were both taken using the same version of HWinfo64 with the Tdie reading. I understand Tctl is artificially 27c higher so i ignored that. Original Results; Current Results (3.75ghz @ 1.275v, same profile as Slight OC of original)
  19. The only thing that i don't know about this motherboard is this, Is the BIOS / UEFI out of the box version compatible with AMD's Threadripper 2950X? This is the exact same model im planning to mount it on: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/X399-GAMING-PRO-CARBON-AC.html
  20. Hey guys, a friend of mine and I started to build his Worksation today. Everything went fine, until the final assembly. Specs: Threadripper 1920X Asus Prime X399-A 64GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-2666 Quad Kit 2x Gigabyte Vega 64 Corsair H150i Pro 1200 Watt Corsair HX1200 I installed the necessery parts (MB, RAM, CPU, Cooling) and plugged everything in and checked if everyting would start up (no monitor yet), everything went fine, fans moving, LEDs on etc. After the final assembly and proper cable management everything still went fine, but I couldn`t get a picture (no BIOS) and the DRAM-Debug-LED was on. I did some troublehooting with the RAMs and ended up in a bootloop, where everything lid up and started running for like five seconds (fans) and went off again, still no picture. I tried different RAMs and different slots, checked the PSU connection but no success. A CMOS clear wouldn't help also. When I dis- and reattached the CPU, the PSU appearently died, because after that, nothing would happen, except for the MB RBG-LED lighting up. I'll change the PSU as fast as I can, but IMO that doesn't explain the first problem. Since the PC is at my friends house, I currently can't get any pictures... Can anyone help me?
  21. Am I the only one who's disappointed that the new Threadripper 2 lower end sku's on have 32 pci-e lanes. I wanted a 1950x for the 60ish lanes but was waiting for TR2 for hopefully a cheaper price on a 16/32, which we got kinda, but it only has half the lanes. Why couldn't it have more. #firstworldproblems
  22. Hello everyone, I am a VFX Artists. I mostly work with rendering and compositing so for that obvious reason I was totally excited about building a Threadripper rig. So, I build my system with Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 7 and 1950x. I was using for a month then suddenly one day the system freeze and I had to force restart my system. Then I researched it for possible troubleshooting. People talking about high bus speed RAM. So, I upgraded my RAM from 2400 bus to 3200 bus still no luck. My rig still freezes without any working and with acceptable temperature. Guys, please help me with this problem. I can not understand what is wrong here. I am guessing it's a motherboard issue. Below, i have attached some images when my PC freezes and also my whole configuration. Looking forward to you guys. I would love to hear what you guys recommend even if it's outside of my 3 options. I do care about future upgradeability, but I'm also trying to keep my budget for this around $1k +/- $150
  25. Hey Beautiful People of this Crazy Community! I got a challenge for everyone (myself included) and that is to put together a SMALL form factor WORKSTATION with a Threadripper 1950x inside. Is it possible? Step 1. (MOBO) Starting with a MOBO small enough for this, was able to find a wide variety of just 1! the micro-ATX x399 Taichi from AsRock. I couldn't find anything else out there for a TR4 socket (if you have please let me know). Step 2. (CASE) The cases for micro-ATX aren't all that small to begin with, and the variety of models are far more than what I browse through without getting dizzy. So, what would be a compact, very plain or classy (no need for RGB fanciness) case that would carry this beast considering: It would also carry 4x8 DDR4 LP RAM, 1x gfx1080ti, No HDD but SSD or even M.2 drive (960pro) for storage and a Power supply that fits the Case and can feed everything inside. Setp 3. (COOLING) And my biggest concern... Is there a way to keep the temperatures of this Mini-Workstation at reasonably low temperatures? I will be very happy to hear from you experts!
