If you use the Epic Games Launcher, you may have noticed that it does not allow you to pin any of your games to start. And if you're like me, you like having access to all your games from your start menu, rather than cluttering up your desktop with shortcuts. Fortunately, there is a pretty easy workaround to this problem that will allow you to manually pin games from the Epic Games Launcher to your start menu. This tutorial will show you the step by step process of doing this. I've included images of each step inside spoilers in case the instructions are confusing. First, you'll need to have a desktop shortcut made for the game. If you don't have one, open the Epic Games launcher and navigate to the library tab. Underneath the game cover art, and to the right of the title, you should see a little three dot icon. Click on this icon, and it should bring up a drop-down menu. From this menu, select "Create a Shortcut". You should do this for all the games you don't already have a desktop shortcut for. Now that you have all the icons on your desktop, you can close out of the Epic Games Launcher. For the next step, you'll need to press Windows + R. This should bring up a small window titled "Run". In this window, type or copy in "shell:start menu", then select "OK". If done correctly, a file explorer window should now appear titled "Start Menu". Now that you have that folder open, simply drag the shortcuts from your desktop into the file explorer window, and you're done! One last thing to note is that after doing this, the games may not appear in your start menu immediately. Sometimes they will show up after a few minutes. However, if you want to speed up the process, restarting your computer will make them appear. Another thing you should know is that if you uninstall the games, the start menu shortcuts won't go away on their own. You will have to go back into the start menu folder using the "shell:start menu" command, and delete the shortcuts yourself. Again, you may have to restart your computer for the icon to disappear from the start menu. Hopefully, this tutorial helped you, and if you have any suggestions to improve it please let me know!

Welp, this issue I've been experiencing practically ever since Windows 11 launched. But honestly speaking, I'm not sure if this really is an unpatched bug or for that matter if any other users out there are still experiencing this like I am. I'm proving a link to a Microsoft Community Forum post I made a month ago about this issue which provides some of the details: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_11-performance/task-manager-start-menu-issues-any-fixespatches/9b152388-1a49-4593-b9f6-57a3f7219813?auth=1 [Don't mind the part that talks about Task Manager crashing. It's not quite so bad now, even though it will still happen occasionally.] When I made that post, I forgot to mention a few important details: Pinned apps don't want to open most of the time unless it's right after a reboot in which case they will work fine for a little while, or if I click the All Apps section in the Start Menu & everything will actually just open normally. When it IS being uncooperative, the "temporary fix" I've found is opening a File Explorer window, then firing up Task Manager to restart File Explorer which does help, but bear in mind that this remedy of sorts is more like putting a band-aid on a broken leg; it's not the real fix/solution that I need. Regarding that post, I was kind of hoping that someone would reply, but I didn't get any replies! So, with that being said, I was hoping there might be some way I could talk this over with someone from Microsoft's Engineering/Development team(s) for Windows. If that simply doesn't work out, then I would highly appreciate it if anyone out there has any experience or even knows of a proper fix, that would totally make my day! If I forgot anything or if you simply need more details, don't forget to ask & I'll be sure to answer back! I sure hope this can be resolved easily since Microsoft's support team wasn't able to do anything...

Start search uses Windows Search which uses Indexing Service. By default, MS Indexes %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - all well and good HOWEVER, by default, MS DOES NOT index %appdata% -- and in there is %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - and if you check Indexing Options, you will find that no, MS does NOT include that specific directory. I've sent feedback using Feedback Hub on this, but for now, any items in Users' Start Menu folder and not the %programdata% Start Menu folder will cause delays, and it appears Start Menu will wait for those results, so even if your item is in %programdata%, your result will be delayed. NOTE you cannot enable indexing of other users' Start Menu locations unless you FIRST access their profile folder in Explorer to get access (their folders will show as not existing in the Indexing Options dialog as that dialog does not display folders the user does not currently have access to). ALSO, it will take a while for Indexing to update and include results from the users' Start Menu folder, so either find a way to force immediate Indexing, or let the computer idle for a half hour on AC power when testing this. In summary, to fix this, find Indexing Options in Start, hit Modify, browse to the \Users\{username}\AppData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu folder and hit its checkbox, then hit OK, then OK. To fix this for other users on your system, Open Explorer, browse to and select their \Users\{username} folder, click to get access, then repeat the above process to enable Indexing. Then wait for Indexing to update the location(s).

I can no longer left click on the start button and see the leftmost vertical list of APPS. The only way to see this is by clicking a link in the upper left and even then it shows APP list that is not the usual Vertal alphabetical list of APPS. HOW can I get this back to the Original Vertical List in lower Left ??? Thanks all.

I'm curious how I can change the behavior of the left and right slide-out menus in Windows 11 Pro. I have it on my Surface Pro 8, and usability is awful compared to Win10. In Windows 10, the slide out menus brought up the Desktops view (left) or the notifications panel (right) which also had options to change brightness, enable night mode etc. In Windows 11, these same menus open up the useless Widgets (left) that I want to permanently disable and the calendar (why?) maybe with some notifications (right). It's like all the usability of the OS has completely gone by the wayside. Three-finger-drag-up opens the same Desktops view, but it's inconsistent, and I can't find an alternative touch combination for the "quick settings" panel. I did figure out how to change a registry value to make the taskbar icons larger, but they're also too close now. And it's still a pain to use if I've got 3-4 Chrome windows open since it requires 2 touches instead of one. I also hid the start menu for more vertical space, but that sucks to use when the keyboard isn't around. There's no longer a "Tablet" mode. I didn't use it often before, but this new taskbar is unusable.

99% of the stuff I had installed is gone from the start menu. When I go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs -- every folder is empty, no shortcuts in any of them. The problem is that nothing is searchable now. When I type in the name of installed programs in search, only web results are shown. Recently I uninstalled a few programs with revo uninstaller, and also did a windows update, not sure which one did this. I tried rebuilding indexing, but it's permastuck on "indexing is paused" regardless of what I do (the number does goes up but slowly,) but I don't think this fixes it. I did a system restore to before I did anything I could think of but still bogged. Any idea how to get programs back to being searchable? Manual one by one is last resort, can't think of anything else. Windows 11

Updated to windows 11 and it's already grinding my gears withing the first few minutes. Yet to find what else pisses me off, but I can't seem to be able to get rid of this blank space on my start menu. How do I reduce this waste of space? Already removed everything but it doesn't just get rid of it like it does on Win 10. Nothing online so far seems to be producing results, just a repeat of what I already did but it's not enough.

This is my windows start menu when I hit the windows button and immediately after I type something. Hitting windows button -> typing what I want has become my usual navigation method in Windows 10 and not being able to is driving me mad. Anyone ever had this happen or know how to fix that's not format - > reinstall?

Hi there, Ive been having this issue for months and its not my first time. I just never bothered to fix it but Im in the spirit for some troubleshooting. The issue is really weird, basically Windows completely ignores the Windows Key and wont do any action, like window snapping, changing Virtual Desktops, change windows, opening the start menu. At first I though it could be the keyboard, but it isnt, a fresh Windows install will work for a bit and break it self. On top of that, it doesnt work either with Virtual Keyboard (Keyboard on-Screen). Any ideas? Thanks, Ralms. P.S.: I'm a fairly advanced user in Windows so you can ask me to try anything you think of as long as it makes sense, like Registry, etc.

In the last big update for Windows 10, they changed quite some things in the UI. I like most of the things, but not the Start Menu. They moved the "User" and the "Power", "Settings" and "Windows Explorer" menus to the left side with no text, but instead only icons. I like that you can now customize these icons and it's functional if you have a lot (I turned on almost all). So that's alright, but it now shows all the Start Menu entries right in the front, as soon as you open it (I'm not talking about the tiles). Just look at the picture.

In windows 10, when scrolling in the start menu and modern ui apps, windows, by default, has a smooth scrolling effect enabled. Is there any way to disable it? Edit: It also seems that there is mouse wheel acceleration. Can this also be disabled?

This is a weird problem which started happening recently. In the video I am trying to do some basic operations like in the beginning I am trying to click on one of the buttons on the left side of the taskbar. Instead of opening the corresponding menu the start menu just closes itself. The second thing I am trying to do is click on the search bar and try to search for a program. When I type in anything the search bar closes. Lastly, I am trying to use the Windows + tab to switch between my windows. Same response. I get a glimpse of my open programs then it vanishes Trouble is, I don't know how to describe this issue to search over the internet. Can anyone explain why this might be happening? Also if anyone has a fix for it that will be greatly appreciated. Note: My PC was running fine until a few hours back. Also, the OS is updated to the latest version. what is happening !!! (2).mp4

Hey there y'all. I've been looking around for some informations on how the built-in UWP apps in Windows 10 behave when you pin them to the Start Menu and was wondering if anyone might come across somewhere that may have this information. In particular, I was wondering where to find information on 1. What fucntionality or sections of an app can be "pinned" to the start menu as a tile (other than the obvious, the app itself) eg. In the Mail app, you can pin individual accounts, or any folder within an account as an individual tile for quick access In the calendar app, you can only pin the whole app as a tile. 2. What apps will give a Live Tile/information response (and possibly under what circumstance) when pinned to Start Menu eg. Mail will show you when new mail arrives plus a snippet of their content. Alarm & Clock will show current time at a destination if you pin it from the Clock funtion in the app. Calculator will show you it's icon but no Live Tile I'm trying to re-interpret the use of the start menu, so I'm hoping to find functionality in the apps. Unfortunately the documentation for them in general, is abysmal, if it even exists. Other than trial and error, I have generally not been able to find much informaton, I was wondering if anyone would know where to look for a more comprehensive guide. Any help would be appreciated. Cheerios.

Hey guys, I'm having a problem with my start menu on Windows 10 for quite a while now, to the point where it becomes too annoying to ignore. My Start Menu keeps the "new" tag on every single program I install, even after I dismiss the tag on the programs, and clear the "recently added" section of the menu. I just need to reboot Windows or restart the Explorer process, and every program becomes tagged again and the "recently added" list now has more than 30 entries. What I have tried so far: -Rebooting the computer -Restarting Explorer process -Clearing every tag and the list -Disabling the recently added list on the system settings (it activates automatically again as soon as I close the settings window) -Updating Windows to the latest version (I don't use the Insider program) -Pulling my hair from my head in desperation Thank you for your help!

Hi all, I've been experiencing this issue for long time and googled a lot before trying to ask here. Basically, when opening the start menu (regardless if using the mouse or the keyboard) the framerate drops gradually but quicky from my native 120fps all the way dows to 20fps and sometimes to only 2fps. Then it stays at very low fps until I move the cursor inside the menu (with a visible stuttering) and then the framerate starts increasing gradually to normal. It happens occationally when opening other windows. The fix to bring the framerate back to normal is always to bring the cursor inside one specific window (very likely the one that caused the stuttering to happen) and move it around a bit or swapping window focus to a different one (desktop included). I want to specify that the system is not busy with heavy tasks when that happens, but it's usually just on idle. When gaming, I never have issues or sudden fps drop. It only happens when changing focus or if a new window opens. I've done a fresh windows install in occation of the new May update and the issue still happens. All drivers are updated to the latest builds. I tried to disable or close backgroud application one by one to see if any of those were conflicting, but none of them solved the issue. I tried to disable G-Sync but still nothing. I've followed any guide I've found related to the same or similar issue, but none of them seemed to work. So I'm here to ask if any of you know what to do. My specs are as follow: Asus ROG Maximus XI Extreme x390 (Bios version 1502); Intel i9 9900K (5GHz all core, 4.8GHz Ring, 0 AVX Offset, 1.250v core) tested stable with OCCT and Cinebench; G.Skill Trident-Z RGB 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz 14-14-14-34 (XPM II enabled); Asus nVidia RTX 2080 Dual OC 8GB GDDR6 (2115MHz core, 15800MHz memory, 1.068v); Samsung nvme m.2 970pro 1TB + Seagate Barracuda compute 6TB; Corsair HX1000i power supply; Custom watercooling loop (single loop) on CPU and GPU with 2x 360x45mm radiators. I hope you have any suggestion for this issue. I know it's not a big deal, but it's annoying to see on a high end rig.

Anyone else annoyed by the ordering of results in the Start Menu search? For example, a search for "Downloads" yields: "Automatic file downloads settings", followed by the Downloads folder, a search for "Documents" yields "Documents library privacy settings", followed by the Documents folder, and a search for "Pictures" yields: "Photos", followed by the Pictures folder. This is just dumb. The folders I am trying to open should be the first on the list. Anyone know a fix?
