Hello there, I travel a lot for work, and I carry my work-provided laptop with me. I need a 2nd, thin, light, convertible 2-in-1 laptop/tablet combo for my personal use (mostly media consumption and a bit of web browsing). I purchased a HP Spectre Folio 13, the leather wrapped 2-in-1 laptop, when it was released, for this usage before COVID. I loved the look, but more importantly the crazy long (18h advertised) battery life it has, as well as the convenient modes of folding it either flat or as a stand to watch movies (*very* helpful on planes). I also love the fact that is doesn't have any moving parts, so it's dead silent all the time. However it's been a few years now, and the leather is starting to tear at the seams, and the machine could use a replacement (battery life isn't what it used to, and I can barely get 6-7h out of it now As you might have understand by now, I don't need a powerful machine, I need: - 2-in-1 convertible (laptop mode + tablet mode, ideally with a similar "stand" position as the Spectre Folio 13 has) - 13" screen - 1080p screen is enough (more would probably drain the battery way too much) - 12-14h on battery (Cover most flights I take. more is always better) - USB-C charging (no proprietary stuff!) - Silent (no fan ideally) - At least 512GB of storage. More is welcome, user extensible is a plus, but not a requirement - 8GB of RAM minimum (16GB or more welcome, as long as it's not a drain on the battery, user replacement is a plus, but soldered on is okay) - No opinion on CPU, APU, etc. as long as it's able to play/transcode media content for VLC, Netflix, Youtube, etc. - No discreet GPU needed, I don't game on this machine - Windows based (Netflix app on Windows allows for download/local cache). I have a mac for work, and I don't want to tinker with Linux for this usage. Bottom line, I pretty much only use this thing as a web browsing and video playback machine (legally acquired DRM free local files, Netflix cached or Youtube). Any idea? I wasn't able to find something that fits the bill (No budget on this, price isn't that important, I need the functionalities first and foremost). Thank you for reading this and hopefully pointing me in the right direction! Best regards, Zak

How can I completely uninstall the spectre/meltdown patch? Running old i3 CPU on a gateway computer, can't upgrade to ivy bridge since they don't offer a bios update. I've been using InSpectre to disable/enable the patches and I've found large performance differences in benchmarks. Wondering if there's a way to completely uninstall these patches, also is there an option to disable/uninstall these patches on android? I don't really care about the security tbh. Heard it's mostly been mitigated in web browsers anyways and I'm relatively conscious in what I use

I want to buy a new laptop. I decided to go for the hp Spectre x360 15"(the one with the 9750h and gtx 1650). Today intel realised the 10th gen mobile chips. I was wondering if hp is going to refresh their laptop with new professors till July. Considering MSI is going to do that on April 15th, the chips are already produced. I am pretty sure that hp refreshed their laptops twice a year. One time at CES and I don't know the other.

Hey LTT forums, Would love some advice from the community. Been looking at the HP spectre x360 as my possible uni laptop. All the reviews I've read has been great and I am loving it. But I've been burnt by HP in the past with its horrendous customer service and build quality. Having to send my envy back to HP for repairs for 3 weeks straight during submission month was hell. I've been hearing HP has stepped up their game but I really can't be too careful. Would appreciate any feedback from the community about any recent experiences with HP and the late 2016 spectre x360. P.S. I live in Singapore, planning to get my laptop in Malaysia cause its cheaper there. P.S.S those wondering why not just get the XPS 13, the prices over here in Southeast Asia are overly inflated. Shame really.

Hey guys, so it seems I should retire my surface pro 2 for a new 2-in-1 I was looking at the HP spectre x360 with an i5 and 8gb ram, looks great for my needs (would've preferred 16gb but they never go with i5s ) It seems perfect, but it seems like it doesn't work with an active pen. Now I am not a massive stylus user, but I do need it sometimes to jot down a diagram or formula while taking notes in onenote I went to a local computer store where they had this laptop and asked one of the workers if it would work with a pen and he replied that of course it would, since it's a touchscreen I don't put to much trust in that guy... But I don't see why it shouldn't be the case. I heard there is no Active pen support but honestly I don't need that, like I said, simple diagrams and formulas occasionally How can I try out if the model in the store can support a pen? Do you think it will? I have a surface pro 2 pen, should i try to see if that works? Thanks for the help to the clueless dude

Hey All! Let me layout my situation so you guys can get a better understanding of my conflict. So about 3ish years ago, as a graduation present, my parents bought me a laptop that I could use for gaming. I was an Xbox user at the time so I didn't know much about specs, and purchased the best looking laptop I could find, an Alienware 17 R1. It looked great with specs like an i7 4710hq, 860m, and all the RGB one could ask for. It was great with the exception of one thing, it weighs ~15 pounds. Fast forward to today, I have my own desktop with a 1080 FE on water and a 6700k which I am very happy with. What I need Advice For I'm planning on selling the Alienware and purchasing one of two thin and light premium laptops. I need help deciding between: HP Spectre with an i7 7500U, 8gb of ram and a 256 NVME drive Or Dell XPS 13 with an i7 7560U and similar specs with a higher price. I'm really leaning towards the spectre, for the thickness, design, and amazing reviews. But, I would like the opinion from the maser race. Keep in mind, the Spectre is ~300 less than the XPS with a discount my job allows me to have.

I need help identifying a problem on 2017-07-13's recent usage report. I'm confused how the device could possibly be suspended with 75% and wake up to a 44% battery. The thing I notice is that my HP Spectre x360 15.6" was just pulled out of my bag very warm to touch. The device did not respond to key presses but the power button is lit up and so was my volume mute indicator. I proceeded to just force shutdown and reboot, as you can see in the battery report, it was indicated that it was still suspended. I'm curious to know your opinion on how my device was still "on" but be "suspended" and very warm to touch when removed from my bag. 15:26:49 Suspended 75 % 57,658 mWh 20:55:59 Active Battery 44 % 34,373 mWh battery-report.html Edit: I've attached Event viewer events here. EventViewerExport.csv I do see that the computer somehow was awaken almost immediately after put to sleep.

ok i may be behind the times but i only found this patch yesterday. KB4497165: Intel microcode updates Apparently it's optional and it's now version 4 i just did a few simple benchmarks to resolve to myself the performance hit to my i7-4790k and actually i didn't even see the 4790k mentioned in the patch details... (although every other Haswell was mentioned, e.g. 4770k) but i installed it anyways and here are the results: (see attached image) Keep in mind i only ran these tests once. i also have the latest BIOS for cpu microcode on Win10 1909 Before “windows10.0-kb4497165-v4-x64” - fresh reboot Score 1908 Using “InSpectre.exe” to disable Spectre & Meltdown - reboot Score 1930 Renabled “InSpectre.exe” to enable Spectre & Meltdown Then Installed “windows10.0-kb4497165-v4-x64”- reboot Score 1946 Whatever this means is up to you, but i'm happy enough not to disable any patch for performance reasons. It's called V4 and Microsoft recommends re-installing it

I want to build a budget NAS and I found a really cheap i7 3770 but does it have protection against Spectre and Meltdown?

EDIT: Also, i checked and im pretty sure there is no FHD option BUT if by some magical miracle someone where to find one? PLEASE let me know lool

Got my HP Spectre x360 today. Its the late 2018 model with the following specs and gem cut design : Processor: Intel I7 8750H hexa-core processor @2.20Ghz Video Card: Geforce 1050Ti with Max-Q Design & Intel 630 via Optimus Technology Memory: 16GB LPDDR3 (Dual Channel) Storage: 256GB Toshiba M.2 NVMe SSD [Soon to be upgraded to 1TB Crucial P1 M.2 NVMe SSD] Display: 4K WLED Display @60Hz Battery: 6-cell, 84 Wh Lithium-ion Battery Color: Poseidon Blue Ports: 2x USB Type-C™ Thunderbolt™ 3 (supports HP Sleep & Charge, DP1.4, PD 3.0, Data Transfer); 1x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A (HP Sleep and Charge); 1 HDMI; 1 headphone/microphone combo Additional Features: Fingerprint Reader, IR Camera w/ Windows Hello, Intel® 802.11b/g/n/ac (2x2) Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 5 Combo(MU-MIMO supported) Basically, I am testing this laptop and so far I've had it for a few hours and it is AMAZING. Not a single complaint, but I know that this laptop comes in many models and no one has really done a solid 100% review of this laptop. I am not a content creator but I am more than willing to answer any questions at all or run tests and provide results for anything that anyone with questions about this laptop would like to request. Please let me know what you'd like to know/see and I will provide. So far this post is pretty spot on https://www.reddit.com/r/spectrex360/comments/9xzllv/gemcut_hp_spectre_x360_15_i7_8750h_gtx_1050ti_maxq/?sort=new Below are some section specific corrections/additions to what is mentioned in the post above : -[Thermals - 5/5] So far, I have not done any extensive thermal testing so I will update this section once I have more information; However, within the few hours I've had it, I did a simple league game just to test and for the duration of a 32minute league game, this laptop did not exceed 75c. Will update soon, and anyone who would like specific thermal tests please let me know below -[Wireless Connectivity - 5/5] I did a wifi speed test on Xfinity 150mb/s internet ( not ISP equipment, but using Ubiquiti equipment ) from two rooms away and got a perfect 168mb/s down and 12mb/s upload. Went all over my house and even outside the front door and found absolutely no disconnections/slowdowns. So far so good, again if you've got any specific scenario or more extensive testing you'd like please let me know and it will be done otherwise I may not look further into this but will inform if I come across anything on everyday usage at home and elsewhere. -[Keyboard - 5/5] I may just be sucking off HP here, but this keyboard is AMAZING. Best laptop keyboard I have EVER used. Spectre line has always been praised for its keyboard but this one is honestly top of the charts. It feels really good, and while it may take some getting used to because of the island num pad causing the trackpad to be a bit off-center, if that isn't a turn-off for you or if you are willing to get used to it ( i did within a few hours tops ) then you will be 100% satisfied with this keyboard. Amazing, and I 100% agree with the reviewer it is awesome. [Sound - 3/5] Honestly, i am not the keenest person when it comes to audio quality so with that being said... I love these speakers. Sound solid, there isn't much bass but at least they are pretty loud without any distortion (fill up my room, which is larger than most I'd think since I work from home and have my "office" in one corner while I have a TV, couch, bed, walk-in closet, bathroom and still enough space to workout comfortably with a bench press on the side of the room). -[Battery Life ?/5] Still needs to be tested, so far I charged it to 100% out of the box and have been using it for the past 6 hours straight, it is currently at 45% and I have completely set up windows, downloaded a few programs like chrome, discord, etc and I also ran crystal disk and played one 32min league of legends game. Brightness is at 60%. Again, any specific tests you'd like just let me know! Okay. So, hit me with those questions and requests! I will be actively checking this post (at least for the next few weeks) so feel free, I will be guaranteed to reply within a maximum of 24 hours ( honestly might reply within minutes if I'm sitting at my desktop or on the laptop ) I would also like to request Linus review this laptop at some point... I honestly believe that you guys would be blown away and give a 8 or 9 out of 10 recommendation for the lowest... Maybe if this gets enough attention they might consider it, but either way, I love you guys

On paper the new HP Spectre x360 2019 should be the ultrabook to rule them all, but in practice... things aren't quite so simple. Buy the HP Spectre x360 On Amazon: https://geni.us/AVVl4Ad On Newegg: https://geni.us/ABqaB0

AMD has introduced a performance penalty in their latest update to their AGESA 1.0.0.4 Microcode. This update decreases the multi-threaded performance of the CPU by more than 15%. I have been in contact with Gigabyte and they acknowledged the problem and were able to reproduce the results as well. The performance decrease can be noticed using real world applications and synthetic benchmarks such as Passmark's PerformanceTest. Gigabyte said they would be contacting AMD about the issue. I have since tested this on two other motherboard manufactures and found the same result. Could someone test the Ryzen 5 2600x and see if this penalty exists there as well? My guess at the moment is a variant of Spectre flaw was patched and has critically hindered the performance and AMD just silently didn't tell anyone. Be warned for anyone buying the Ryzen 7 2700x and getting the expected performance that has been reported in the past. This patch has hit the overall performance of the CPU.

Help to chose a Work/Gaming Laptop (~3500$)
Rifawkes posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hi everyone! I am looking for laptop choice advice! I saw this Q&A type post earlier and find it clear to read so I made one similar : CONTEXT: I am an Engineering student in my last year of school and would like to buy a work/gaming laptop that will last me at least 5 years. As I am willing to put a lot of money in it I really want to choose it carefully! Thanks for your help! • Total budget ? ~3000€ / ~3500$ max budget (France or USA) • General Specs / Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications? - 2 in 1 would be awesome - 7-9 hours battery ideally - i7 8th gen or better - 16 Gb ram or more (I assume 2 x 8Gb is also better but please correct me if not) - 512Go SSD minimum - 2To SSD maximum - Windows 10 • How important is weight and thinness to you? Thin and light is better but most importantly: I don't want a laptop looking too much like a gaming laptop (as I need to use it for work it is better if the design is sober) Performance is still my priority. • Do you have a preferred screen? 15" FHD or 4K Good screen temperature and colors as I wish to use Adobe Creative Suite 60Hz+ refresh rate as I wish to play also • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing? List which programs/games you desire to run. - Adobe Creative Suite (mostly Photoshop & Premiere Pro) - Solidworks / Fusion 360 (small/medium designs) • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to play in ultra settings around 45-70 fps depending on the game (The Witcher 3 / FarCry 5 / RDR2 / TES6 hopefully haha / etc..) • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like the laptop to last so a solid structure would be great (metal). A good keyboard is also nice. Touch-screen is a good feature but not mandatory. I know this is a lot of requirements and there might not be THE perfect laptop but still if you have any advice and devices to suggest I would be glad to hear it ! For now I've been looking at : - HP Spectre x360 15-df0900nz - Dell XPS 15 2 in 1 - Microsoft Surface Book 2 but I'm not convinced PS: English is not my native language, sorry for the mistakes -
Hello guys, I am looking for a new laptop i want to game with it and do some autocad for study it doesnt need to do al the work because i have a very good pc at home but for at school i want some power to and ofcourse that i can game occasionally. hp HP Spectre x360 Core i7 8th Gen for Gaming?
leykhins posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hey Linus Tech Tips do you think that this laptop is convenient for gaming? If it is which ones? -
Hi, I Just sold my i7-8700K to buy the i9 9900K (don't need a lesson in price/performance, i just wanted the best and using the money i sold the i7 for made the i9 not that expensive), and i am wondering whether the same problems* experienced by the 8th gen still exist. *meltdown & spectre etc If i understand it correctly the bugs where an architectural flaw which could only be "fixed" (but more like "botched" leading to marginal performance decrease, especially in storage if i remember correctly) by updating BIOS and windows drivers. Did they mange to fix the flaw before the 9th gen? Surely it makes sense for consumers to think so as a new product shouldnt have a flaw, but at the same time fixing a architectural flaw, implementing it and then get it through new testing phase, then getting it into production must take some time. Do anyone know whether it is fixed, and if so do you have sources? I tried to search google with no luck, probably an answer out there but must be buried in "news and leaks" which mostly came up. And one more thing, I had to update my bios to newest version (i have z370) to support 9th gen, is the bios patch applied regardless what CPU is installed (only relevant if 9th gen is fixed), I know this question is way more techinical and harder to find out, but I would be surprised if they managed to make 2 different versions to operate in the BIOS for different CPU generations, but maybe it's not that difficult, as said IDK. Thanks in advance

Hi all, I wanted to ask about wether or not i should turn off spectre and meltdown protection on my PC. When i'm playing RDR2 and when i'm in cities/towns, i get bad stutter des[ite of my FPS being higher or very close to 60. I tried every fix and it was all in vain until someone suggested to turn this malware protection off. This worked and completely got rid of the stuttering and also gave me a few bonus FPS. I'm running an i7-4790 in my pc. So, the chances are i never even got a patch for it because despite my CPU being old, my bios isn't updated as well? The performance difference after disabling this from the software "InSpectre" is noticable. What i usually do is when i want to play intensive games, i turn this off and restart my PC and stay away from internet browsers and turn it back on when i'm done and again restart (It requires a restart to apply the change). Should i just turn it off or keep doing what i do? Thanks! Specs: i7-4790 cooled by Cooler Master MA410p, 16GB DDR3 1600mhz, MSI GTX 1070, 240GB GIGABYTE SSD (boot), 2TB WD Blue HDD (Games), CORSAIR HX620 PSU (620w 80+ Standard)

Hello, I'm waiting from HP (because my Pavilion 14 was lost during the travel to their repair service) the delivery of an HP Spectre 2018 (8Gen Processor), as everybody know the HP Spectre has an active pen (like the Surface Pen) that for me (I'm a student) will be very usefull to take notes during the lessons but I have a doubt: I have a bad calligraphy on paper (I won't even think on a screen with digitalizer how bad can be), can Windows automatically improve/correct the stroke, the shapes and the calligraphy in general? I know that exist an OCR function but I'd really like to have my notes written by me but understandeable Thanks in advance, Carlo. Note: I'm really sorry if there are grammar/ortography errors, I'm still learning and I'm using a Lenovo Netbook to write this thread, I hope in Your comprehension.

Primary Source: Intel (PDF), Research Paper (PDF), ARM (PDF) Secondary Source: Bleeping Computer Looks like CPU vulnerabilities will just keep popping out as security researchers continue to poke holes and chip makers are playing a game of whack-a-mole with these vulnerabilities. I have a feeling that 2018 will end and security researchers have found variant 10 vulnerability and it will come as a smear campaign by a CTS lab wannabe and will give Intel 12 hours to patch it. As of now no software mitigations are available but Intel is working with their partners on how to mitigate attacks taking advantage of the exploit at the software level. Microsoft for instance has recently released an advisory that they too are looking into this as well as ARM. If there's any consolation, the security researcher applied for Intel's bug bounty program via HackerOne and got paid $100,000. I don't really get as to why AMD is not listed when all of their CPUs including Ryzen are vulnerable to Spectre 1&2 and the newly published ones uses a similar attack technique. Maybe for the security conscious person like an IT guy in a company, the only thing that they can do at the moment is use an up to date endpoint security program and implement built-in mitigations like Force ASLR in Windows 10 which is turned off by default. I'm guessing the reason why Force ASLR is turned off by default is that not all programs are compiled to take advantage of ASLR and might result to incompatibilities. as @leadeater once said, naming CPU vulnerabilities are confusing

I noticed a 0.005%-0.85% consistent drop in CPU performance after updating my motherboard's Bios to a revision that was supposed to mediate the metldown and spectre flaws. Is this normal? CPU: i7 6700 GPU: GTX 1060 SSD: Ultra II 960GB (All drivers and updates are to the most current version.)

There has been a lot of speculation regarding Spectre and Meltdown, specifically how it will affect overall system, performance. Most sources seem to indicate Intel CPUs are taking more of a performance hit than AMD. This raises a question. Linus, when you do your performance testing, are you doing your testing with systems that have the Spectre Meltdown fixes in place or not? I ask because it seems like the test results WITHOUT those fixes in place would not be a good representation of what most people are dealing with... So do your test systems have Spectre and Meltdown patches in place?
