  1. Hello, Can someone tell me how to access a terminal server VM from a remote workstation over VPN? The server is Windows 2012 with Virtual Box installed. AD DS is installed on the physical machine and the terminal server is a VM. The remote workstation needs a specific application that runs in the terminal server. The VPN enabled router will be something like a SonicWALL TZ300. Does the VPN client software see the terminal server on the network? How exactly do they connect? Thank you.
  2. Hey Guys, I am going to be setting up a minecraft server on a computer I have laying around, will post specs at the bottom. I will be using windows server 2012 r2 and just want it to be a consistent lag free setup that will just stay open on its own all the time with very little input from me. I would like the server to auto restart every 6 hours, I am planning to use spigot and plugins to do that so I have that figured out. My question is on non server hardware with regular ddr4 memory will it be okay to not restart the machine often(or at all)? What I really want is to have the minecraft server(software) auto restart every 6 hours. And have the actual server(hardware) reboot every 24 hours without harming anything. I am not sure if the server hardware reboot is necessary though. Basically in short, me and 5-10 friends play minecraft and just want a server that will always be on, and always have our world on it, that I do not have to pay for(realms) without lag. System: Skylake I3 of some kind, not sure the actual cpu. 16 gbs ddr4 memory 256 gb SSD not sure if anything else is relevant Network: 200 mb/s down 20 mb/s up I am also curious the bandwidth something like this would use, I have a 700 gb monthly cap and get pretty close to it every month. Thanks in advance please let me know if you need any other info to help me.
  3. i want to see if the number that the user input is there in the database by counting it and if the count is 0 i want to set a label visibility to true.i have tried this code but it didnt work: private void textBox5_KeyDown_1(object sender, KeyEventArgs e) { if (e.KeyCode == Keys.Enter) { textBox6.Focus(); e.Handled = true; //The code delow is for selecting the module name from the module table and displaying it on textbox2 cn.ConnectionString = @"Data Source=Dell-PC\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=employee_db;Integrated Security=True"; cmd.Connection = cn; string xy = textBox1.Text; cn.Open(); SqlCommand check_User_Name = new SqlCommand("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM [Employees] WHERE ([emp_ID] = @xy)", cn); check_User_Name.Parameters.AddWithValue("@x", textBox1.Text); int UserExist = (int)check_User_Name.ExecuteScalar(); if (UserExist > 0) { label4.Visible = true; } else { MessageBox.Show("success"); } cn.Close(); }
  4. i have created a domain controller in my windows server 2012 which is running in a virtual machine through VM ware. I also have windows 10 running in a virtual machine through vm ware. i have tried to put the domain name that i created on server for the windows 10 computer so that i can use the user logins i have created there but i get this error: Active Directory for the domain controller for the domain "name.com" could not be contacted error. what can be the problem? this worked fine when i tried in my university computer but not in my home pc
  5. so this is the script i pasted in the sysvol folder: Dim net dim shel On Error Resume Next set net=CreateObject("WScript.Network") set shel=createobject("Shell.Application") net.MapNetworkDrive "W:"," \\WISDOMMASTER\papers" net.MapNetworkDrive "Y:"," \\WISDOMMASTER\Common" shel.namespace("Z:").self.name= net.UserName & " Home" and the only drive that shows up at the client computer is a drive called Z. i still have not been able to find what i have doing wrong here.it would be very helpful if someone could spot the mistake
  6. So, I'm using Server 2012 R2 to host a network share for CAD workstations, backing up client computers, access to folders with group policies, blah blah blah. I have an automatic backup every day at a certain time, and have about 6TB to play with. I'm afraid it will fill up after 120 days (~50GB/day.) How do I delete daily backups at the end of the week so I'm only left with 1 per week of the month, then after the month is over, delete the 3 previous backups for the month? I'm also interested with setting up the Azure Cloud Storage for the weekly backups, then doing the same thing as the local server for the 3 previous weeks, so any suggestions for that would be appreciated.
  7. what im trying to do is im going to give access to users for a folder and i do not want them to insert anything into it apart from image files. is there any sort of control that i can use to do this in server 2012?

    Save me

Today we were doing a new firewall install, the old firewall is a cisco ASA 5510 that was going to be replaced by a Sonicwall TZ 400(This was happening at 2 locations, the main office and the Colo). The install was a bust and we were switching back to the Cisco, now upon switching back we cannot get virtual machines at the Colo to work, their office is up and running without issue, or any computer to use a couple IP addresses. Example LAN IP:192.168.0.10255.255.255.0192.168.0.1(it doesn't matter what the DNS is set to whether it is a public google/xfinity or to a DNS server that's local)The systems cannot reach the outside network whatsoeverWe have tried rebooting all network equipmenttried running netsh winsock resetrebooting systems multiple timesdestroying VM Switch adapter and recreatinginvestigated Cisco Firewall and no rules are in place stopping it.The Cisco did show that from the inside out it is fine, but from outside in (Google dns to local ip) fails and defaults to the basic deny rule.I have exhausted every resource I have and I am just short of going and sacrificing live chickens to the IT gods. Please someone save me from this nightmare.
  9. so im trying to display a basic html page using iis and im getting "the page cannot be displayed error",im pretty sure theres nothing wrong with the html as i opened it and it displays fine on the browser. the IP address im using is also not used by anything else in the computer so it shouldnt be the one causing problems. the file has been given admin access to the physical path so i dont think theres a problem there.i have no idea where else i should check. can someone suggest me something that i should check and see. thanks
  10. i have got VM ware workstation 12 PRO and im trying to connect a windows 10 virtual machine with a server 2012 virtual machine. i have tried many solutions shown in youtube but i haven't managed to get a single one to work. when i try to ping from server to windows 10 or windows 10 to server i get request timed out in cmd. The images below shows the settings
  11. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/01/29/microsoft_internet_explorer_10/ In a move that will shock no one, IE 10 is getting the ax in 2020, along with Windows 7. However, unlike Windows 7, MS will not provide any paid support afterwards. MS didn't port IE 11 to every OS, so some systems were forced to continue running IE 10. Seems like MS has finally decided to make 11 available for versions they still support, in order to stop supporting 10.
  12. I have successfully setup Server 2012 R2 Essentials from my server and using its url i can access this from another computer. However i noticed that im unable to access it from the server itself or from a device that is on the same network as the server. i would like to know if its possible to allow the server to access Server 2012 R2 Essentials using the url from the server itself and also allow other devices on the same network to access it. Thanks
  13. hello,is there some sort of script to untick "change password at next logon" and tick "password never expire" option for all accounts in a specific OU in Server 2012 R2? I know its possible to do this using GUI, but i want to do this programmatically for reasons. I have found this code and tried running it in powershell. i get the message it was successfully executed but no change has been actually done. would like to know if there is a proper code to achieve this. Thanks dsquery user “OU={your target OU},DC={your domain},DC={your domain extension}” | dsmod user -pwdneverexpires yes
  14. so i have a server 2012 running in VMWare and i have a website setup in it using IIS. the website runs well within the server but i cant access this from my host computer. Every time i try from my host computer i get error 404 when trying to access using IP address. got site cant b reached error when trying using domain name. when i tried accessing using ip address with port in url i got http error 400. I read similar problems online and saw suggestions asking to check if firewall is blocking port 80.i disabled firewall in both host and server but no change. i also set port forwarding in my router and forwarded port 8080 to the IP of the website but still nothing. Im running the VM as a bridged network. i have setup an FTP server too and that works well. no idea why this doesnt. any help to fix this would be appreciated.thanks
  15. hello, i have created a user account using ASP.NET using the command below. public string CreateUserAccount(string ldapPath, string userName, string userPassword) { try { string oGUID = string.Empty; string connectionPrefix = "LDAP://" + ldapPath; DirectoryEntry dirEntry = new DirectoryEntry(connectionPrefix); DirectoryEntry newUser = dirEntry.Children.Add ("CN=" + userName, "user"); newUser.Properties["samAccountName"].Value = userName; newUser.CommitChanges(); oGUID = newUser.Guid.ToString(); newUser.Invoke("SetPassword", new object[] { userPassword }); newUser.CommitChanges(); dirEntry.Close(); newUser.Close(); } catch (System.DirectoryServices.DirectoryServicesCOMException E) { //DoSomethingwith --> E.Message.ToString(); } return oGUID; } This makes the account, however it creates disabled accounts and i have to enable it manually for it to work. I have tried the command below to enable the created account but it is giving me the error on the screenshot. public void Enable(string userDn) { try { DirectoryEntry user = new DirectoryEntry(userDn); int val = (int)user.Properties["userAccountControl"].Value; user.Properties["userAccountControl"].Value = val & ~0x2; //ADS_UF_NORMAL_ACCOUNT; user.CommitChanges(); user.Close(); } catch (System.DirectoryServices.DirectoryServicesCOMException E) { //DoSomethingWith --> E.Message.ToString(); } } i have been searching for fixes for hours now but haven't had any luck. would really appreciate if someone could help.Thank you
  16. im trying to stream a video from my sever 2012 with anywhere access to a client computer. i got it running and it works, but sometimes (i guess when my internet slows down) the stream doesnt start at all. instead it goes to download the entire video. i dont want it to do this and i would like to know if theres any way of disabling downloading and make it to try streaming. i havent spotted any option to do this on the dashboard. i have set the stream quality to low to hopefully stream it smoothly but it doesnt seem to be doing it.would appreciate if someone could help me figure out this. thanks
  17. hello, im trying to setup anywhere access in my server 2012 R2 and im getting 2 errors at the end of the setup (shown in the image attached). i searched about this and i saw a lot of people tell to enable port forwarding in the router. so i tried the same by putting IP of my server to the router and forwarded port 80 and 443 but i still receive the errors. i also saw at certain places that some ISPs block forwarding of these ports so that could also result with the issue. the error by server 2012 also says this. im unsure if my ISP does that or if its some mis-configuration that i have done. i should also state that im trying this out for learning purposes and not for business use. so i havent bought anything from my ISP (if something from them is necessary to get this running). any suggestions that i could try would be helpful as im new and dont know what else to look for. thank you
  18. I need thoughts and critiques of my OS choices and storage build design. I have a new build that I have almost entirely ordered but are awaiting on delivery. CPU: Intel Core i7-6850K 3.6GHz 6-Core Processor CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler Motherboard: Asus X99-DELUXE II ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB (8 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Storage: Samsung 950 PRO 512GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive Storage: Western Digital Red 4TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive Have Storage: Western Digital Red 6TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive New Storage: Seagate Archive 8TB 3.5" 5900RPM Internal Hard Drive New Storage: Seagate Archive 8TB 3.5" 5900RPM Internal Hard Drive New Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Have Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Have Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Have Video Card: NVIDIA Quadro K4000 3GB Video Card Have Video Card: Older AMD, going to be upgrading to a RX480 or one of the 1080/1070s but not sure yet Case: Fractal Design Define R5 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case Power Supply: Corsair RMx 1000W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply Optical Drive: Pioneer BDR-2209 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer Monitor: HP 27vx 27.0" 60Hz Monitor I have more hard drives then that but do not fit in the R5. I need some help from the community on their thoughts of what I should run for the OS(s). My largest reason for this build is to have a NAS on my Gigabit network at home. I have a PoE switch that when I move to my new home will be used for IP cameras. I want to use my rig to act as a storage server for them and have a offsite backup for the surveillance.(August 2017). I used to do a lot of photo and video editing, which is why I have so many hard drives, but my old Dell XPS system gave up the ghost and with this rig I can go back to it. I want to also be able to run a media server in the house for Plex or something. I have the apps on my phones but no server lol. I want to be able to have the kids access VMs to use it resources. I have an XBOX one but would really come back to the world of PC Gaming and get a VR setup (at new house for the space August 2017) and Dolby ATMOS. I currently have about 20HHDs (from 500GB to 8TB) that I want to consolidate and protect their data and 2 Dual drive docking stations, 1 Mediasonic? 4 bay 3.5in bay 1 Two drive Lacie raid drive (only has 2 1tb in it right now) 3 Seagate external drive enclosures 8 WD extnernal drive enclosures I have thought of using a smaller hp AMD A10-5700 with freeNAS and moving the uATX board into a older Antec 1080plus full tower and using a 3ware 9650SE raid card in IT mode but I was doing some research on the motherboard and the Atheros onboard NIC is not supported by BSD so I would need a gigabit NIC for that. So that is my deterrent from using a second machine even though I can but I really want to take advantage of the horsepower out of this new rig. So I was thinking Unraid which is not a problem paying for especially since they are doing all the work I don't have time for setting up the kernel and getting the right packages installed. I have a CentOS build at work which is fine for an OS but I am not sure about spending all the time and hassle to set up the intricacies. One thing I can do besides the Unraid is set up VMware but am a bit confused on the licensing of the free ESXi hyper-visor. I use Vsphere and Vcenter at work so I am familiar with the interfaces here but I don't do the onboarding for the servers (we have the enterprise license so virtually everything they have) so I am not sure about licensing for the free hyper-visor. I know I can pass though the GPUs to the VM and that is fine but doing it remotely is best done with horizon with view as it allows the work to be done directly. One of the things that I don't know about and am concerned about is wanting to do a RAID 1 on the 2 Seagate Archive drive and if you can do that within Unraid(not as a parity since it is slow) or do it as a software RAID within the ASUS MB or do it on the 3ware 9650-8i card. That is where I want to store all my photos and videos.(besides keeping a copy of the them on the older smaller WD external drives). My biggest concern on this is compatibility and whether or not it will work with each setup. Once the data gets on there I wont be changing it much. So write speed is not that important. Also for workflow I can copy the files I want to work off into a RAM drive or the 950pro. Another issue is the 950pro. I want it to be my primary "machines" drive for Windows 10. I have some stuff but nothing solid or concrete if there is a way to pass through a single drive in Unraid. I bought the 850evo for use as a cache disk. Also my plans before I thought about using Unraid was to buy 4 WD Red 6TB drives and do a RAID 5 thought the ASUS board. So I bought one that I can use for the parity drive and if later I will buy the others for what ever I end of going with. For that setup it would have been OS drive: 950pro 512GB RAID5 Array: 4*6TB WD Red for an array of about 20TB for ebooks movies music etc RAID1 Array: 2*8TB Seagate for an array of 8TB for Video and Photo storage Future Array: 2-3*6-8TB WD Purple for Surveillance system. (this would need probably an external enclosure and LSI RAID card ( I don't want to rely on my 3ware card) to run since my ASUS board only has 10(8+2) SATA Connectors and 4 of them cant be used for RAID and 3 U2/M.2 connections. The R5 case can hold 8 *3.5inch drives and 2*SSDs and will have one open 5.25" by I can use.) Now I'm thinking if I do Unraid USB drive: for unraid Cache drive: 850EVO 500gb Parity drive: WD 6TB Red Data drives: 3*WD 6TB Red, 1*WD 4TB Red, 2*WD 3TB Black Somehow a raid array of 2 Seagate 8TB Archive (also I could do one in this case and one in another case that runs rsync or something. ) OK Sorry about the jumping and incongruity my ADD is taking over. Please let me know your thoughts and what you think. Thank you very much!!
  19. Hi All - So I'm having some issues with one of my Windows Server 2012 R2 machines - I decide to try out the Storage Spaces in the O/S and found it easy to setup and fairly easy to figure out the difference between pools and actual storage etc. It has been running on my server for nearly a year and is used to back up A LOT of data while I work on customers machines, ie reformats. My issue is that I have 4 x 4TB drives in a two-way mirror so 16TB total 8TB actual, my storage pool is saying I need to add more drives as my pool is too full, I have cleared out SOOOO much data but the pool doesn't think I have, is there anyway to 'jump start' storage spaces into realising I have released all that space? I have attached screenshots so you can see. Oh and I've just noticed the virtual drive showing up in Disk Management, I've seen this before but not on my machine and it was NOT there before the reboot I did about an hour ago so that doesn't have anything to do with my current issue but if anyone knows why it's doing it I'd love to know. Thank you for any wisdom you might be able to impart, I really don't want to have to take this server offline at all
  20. Hi, I just installed Exchange Server 2013 and I keep on getting a white screen after I login (this is with localhost/ecp and localhost/owa) Seeing the ecp / owa pages are fine it's after I login I get this problem. I did some research and the main problems are SSL certificate / Virtual Directories. I checked the SSL certificate and all that is fine from what I can see. The virtual directory they say remove and re-add using remove -owaVirtualDirectory however, running this is powershell says that command doesn't exist. So does anyone know how I execute that command or do I need to load in a library in powershell to do that or is that an IIS command? Is there anything else I can do to diagnose this, looking at event viewer is useless as nothing comes up. Any help will be appreciated with this. Thanks
  21. Hello all, I am looking for a little advice. I have a Xeon E5410 on a Intel s5000vsa with 32gb of ecc memory. I plan on using this as a home server and I am wondering if I should stay with windows server 2008 (currently on the server) or if I should install a copy of windows server 2012. 2012 will add no extra cost for me. My biggest concern is will 2012 be to heavy for the server to run or will it run nicer then server 2008 (similar to windows 8 being easier to run then windows 7). Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
  22. Tried asking some questions about my build in New Builds and Planning section with more info and the mods I am making etc, but seems like everyone in that section only cares about making gaming rigs so all of my server questions were basically ignored and my post was hardly even viewed, so now I am here instead. So I bought a used rack mount 1U server, I am currently doing mods to it (removing the internal 40mm fans with 80mm external fans to cut noise down.) The server has 2x quad core Xeon processors and 16gb of DDR2 ECC, it came with 2x 74gb SAS drives which I am not sure what i'll do with yet, probably use them for VMs. I have a question about storage, I am thinking about going with RAID-5 (technically its just called parity in 2012 R2) for redundancy and slightly better speed. I have 2x 2TB drives and I'll get a 3rd to complete the array, but Server 2012 R2 supports tiering with SSDs if you use a storage pool. So I was thinking that I could possibly use 3x 2tb drives and a 240gb SSD (I have one laying around) and I could partition the SSD to use half for the operating system and half for a higher tier in the storage pool for more frequently used data. Would this work? I know Storage Pool requirements are a bit different than Windows Disk Management, not sure if 3x 2TB drives and one partitioned SSD are enough for tiered parity set up. Anyone have advise or experience with this? Another option is using FlexRAID, which I know little about. Purposes for this server include: PXE OS deployment (testing and practical applications) Using it as a file server Active directory practicing Print server DNS DHCP SQL Virtualization Server clustering Remote operation Learning Powershell server commands etc. Basically I am going to use this for practicing enterprise level computing...at a very small scale.
  23. Hi guys, just upgraded to server 2012 and having a slight issue with setting the permissions on roaming user profiles. Is this supposed to be done different than in server 2008/2003? (eg. GPO) because I've tried to to set the permissions on the users' folders without and luck. Ive gotten it as far as it creates the folder for the user but administrators do not have access. below is the batch file i used to run to enable this: icacls C:\UserProfiles /grant Everyone:(NP)(AD,RD,RA,X) icacls C:\UserProfiles /grant "Domain Admins":(OI)(CI)F icacls C:\UserProfiles /grant System:(OI)(CI)F icacls C:\UserProfiles /grant "CREATOR OWNER":(OI)(CI)F icacls C:\UserProfiles /remove administrators
  24. Hey I am a student, I have to install and set up with a hotswap 2012 r2 hdd, and on Any other pc apart from one 1 the keyboard and mouse doesn't work, i can get in with a ps2 mouse but the driver can't be installed, code 28, if I try to update it says installation is forbidden by system policy.
