USB random disconnections and random complete power loss
ThisguyVR posted a topic in Troubleshooting
Hi all, I've had these two intermittent issues that occur completely randomly. Issue 1: At completely random times, all of my USB connections will disconnect then reconnect after 5 ish seconds. I have no idea why it is occurring. PC Specs as follows: Motherboard: Asus Prime B550M-K CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT RAM: Kingston Fury Renegade 16GB (2x8GB) Storage: 4TB (2x1TB NvME Storage and 2x 1TB SSD Storage) OS: Windows 11 22H2 PSU: Corsair TX550M For my USB devices: Corsair K55 RGB Corsair Harpoon RGB Pro Corsair MM800 RGB Polaris TC Helicon GoXLR (Full Size) Valve Index 3x Full body HTC Tracking 3.0 docks I'm not sure what to do or what to give to help troubleshoot but open to ideas. Issue 2: Again at random times, PC will completely lose power and then turn on again. It's happened a few times while streaming and playing games but also happened when absolutely nothing is going on, when sitting at idle so to speak. PC spec above. Again any ideas or thoughts will be great. Thank you for reading.- 14 replies

Hello everyone, hope you have a wonderful day. I'll list my build first: CPU: Ryzen 5 2600 Memory: Patriot viper elite 2x8 gb 2666MHz Mobo: Gigabyte B450 Aorus elite GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1060 6gb PSU: Corsair RM650x Everything is back to stock right now(no OC)... since I encountered these problems I reverted to defaults. My issue is really hard to reproduce because it's not happening that often. Once or twice a week I'm greeted with a sudden power loss 5 minutes after I'm into Windows. It's strange because it happens no matter of what I'm doing. I could be playing a game or just idle-ing on desktop, this problem can occur either way. Tried stress testing after starting my pc, but, like it always happens , everything went smoothly and I didn't have any problems. I ran stress tests like prime95 combined with a gpu intensive workload even, but I couldn't reproduce the issue. Tests ran for ~4 hours without any hiccup. Temps are fine. Max temp on my CPU was 58C in prime and GPU maxes at ~70C in valley. When the problem does appear there are 2 scenarios: Sudden power loss with everything remaining completely dead... no restarting, no nothing. It's like pulling your power cable out and leaving it like that. Sudden power loss and after 10-15 seconds the computer starts on its own again... this happens rarely though. The first scenario occurs much more often. I'm suspecting that either the PSU or Motherboard are at fault here, but I'm leaning towards the mobo. Can't really see why the PSU would do this when it works perfectly during max load. What do you guys think about this? It's really frustrating for me as the problem happens so rarely and I can't reproduce it. Any help will be appreciated .

I'm working at a school district and there server went off last night and they had no idea. They called me in (Electrician) to find out what the issue was. A breaker had tripped causing the Servers to go down. They want me to find something to send notifications of any Power Failures, but what I've seen through Google searches aren't great. I was hoping to find something that can send out email or text or push notification, possibly over cellular (in case the internet also goes down). The only thing I've ever used that was close what im looking for is the Ring Alarm, but thats because it has a cellular backup. It sends me push notifications that power was lost or restored. I was also thinking of using something with a Raspberry Pi, but I'm sure someone in IT would freak out if they saw it and didn't know who set it up.

So yesterday i was using my pc normally and then, something weird happend. First of all, i have a desktop pc Windows 11 pro Ryzen 5 3400G with apu No external GPU Asrock a320m r 4.0 motherboard Two generic 2600mhz 8Gb ram sticks An old 650w Power supply (I have a feeling this can be the problem) I was playing Outer Wilds in medium settings when the pc goes off. It sounded like a hard reset (pushing the power button and hold for 5sec to power off the pc) and when I power on again... Nothing, no post. So a tried un plugging the pc from the auxiliar power supply I have and plug it directly to the wall socket. Then the pc starting to fail to start, the fans and leds turn on for like a second and then power off again. I un plug the power supply from the motherboard and let it cool down for half an hour, plug it again and tried. Then the pc start normally but no post. I removed the ram sticks and let they on the table for a couple of minutes and plug only one to the motherboard, no post. Tried with the other: FINALLY POST! So, windows starts nornally but, no keyboard, no mouse, well, that's weird. I have a 10 dollar generic office Genius keyboard and a cheap led generic "Gaming" mouse. The leds of the mouse turn on but no driver seems to be found. The keyboard is totally off. I turned off the pc and tried unplugging both and tired usb 3.0 ports, but it doesn't work. Windows starts nornally but no mouse. So I connected via Anydesk from my phone and manage to get to the Device Manager, there's no driver nor driver category to be found in there. Like keyboard and mouse even exists in windows. No inherence hardware even in the list. Check the Human Devices Interface Service, it was disabled, even more weird. Enable it and tried, nothing. Restart the pc, nothing. Service is running but no bueno. Think the entire usb hub was dead, so plug an external hard drive. Works just fine. Plug another usb mouse from my sister's pc. Not work. No usb was left untried. Non of then works. So tried to get to the bios to check if the usb hid was disabled but, of course keyboard doesn't work. Tried plugging a PS2 keyboard, it works! Ok, but I have a hybrid ps2 keyboard mouse port so i still need the usb to recognize my mouse at least. Manage to hack around with the ps2 keyboard on the bios and found nothing referring to the usb legacy mode or so. So i went to the bios battery. Unplug everything and remove the battery, left that way for half an hour. Plug the battery and turn on the pc. The bios was reset but still no usb mouse or keyboard working. Went to the CMOS reset jumper and short it. Again, another reset but no mouse or keyboard working. At this point I have a probably dead 8gb ram stick and a rouge usb hub which recognize everything but an HID. I suspect the power supply is not delivering the correct voltage. I removed every conector and clean it and connecting it again but nothing. I tried the keyboard and mouse on my sister's pc and they worked just fine. At this point i thought windows is missing the driver but even the bios does not recognize the peripherals. So my question is, can a failing power supply cause this behavior in thw usb hub? i gonna try with another Power supply tomorrow.

So I recently had a power loss at my house from a recent storm. I have a surge protector, so no big deal. Well, not so much. Now I randomly am disconnected from the internet (Wi Fi) and I have to forcefully hit disconnect and reconnect every time. And every time I hit reconnect, it connects instantly. I wanted to go back to streaming, but with my stream cutting out every five minutes, I can't. I don't know what to do. I tried reinstalling drivers and programs (even deleting the programs out of the registry, which did nothing to help so I just loaded the registry I backed up before I edited it), resetting the router, and reinstalling the physical hardware. I even tried using an old PCIe Wi-Fi card. Nothing. I even tried seeing if the router was blocking me, nope. I just don't know what to do and am frustrated beyond belief. Any ideas are appreciated. -Darkroe

Hello everyone, first time poster here so if I'm being a moron, do let me know. I recently built a new PC the beginning of this month, its only my 4th build, I'm still new to the process and I've run across a bit of an issue. First of all here is my system: Asus ROG Strix B550e AMD 3700x with stock cooler Gskill trident neo 32gb (2x16gb) Gigabyte Radeon RX 580 (updating to 3000 series nvidia when released) EVGA 600w 80 plus bronze (waiting to update with new GPU) WDblack 500gb m.2 ssd Cooler Master TD500 mesh case running windows 10 student edition My issue is this machine is blooping itself off. like not a restart or a freeze, just Bloop, off like the power went out but just for the PC. the motherboard lights will stay on but I have to flip the psu off and back on to start the computer up again. I have two identical EVGA PSUs and have switched them out to same effect, so maybe not bad PSU but possibly insufficient? I only have 2 CPU power plugs and not the third hooked into this beefy motherboard but from what I understand the extra is only for the most extreme overclocking? This has only happened after playing a game or Premiere Pro for a couple hours. my temps seem to be fine mid 30s to low 40s idle, 60s to 70 under prolonged load using Ryzen master to monitor. I have turned off fast boot in windows. I could really use some help troubleshooting this, any information someone would need to assist I will do my best to provide. Thank you all.

Okay, so I built my new Ryzen system about 2-3 months ago (full specs are in my profile). For the most part, it's run incredible. Games run smooth and Windows/applications run fast. However, I've had an odd issue that's popped up very randomly (3 times so far) and it's bugging me because I can't seem to narrow it down, due to the intermittent nature of it. When I leave to go to work, my computer is left running. The CPU is allowed to idle down and the monitor goes to sleep, but the system itself does not go into sleep mode. This is how I always run my computers. My previous system ran for several years like this, no problem. Now, however, I've come home a few times to find my keyboard and trackball unresponsive (the numlock LED is off), and the only option I have is to force shut down my system and power back up. I'm at work right now, so I don't have the exact message, but the event log mentioned a power loss (yet the system was still powered on). The last time it happened, it showed the power loss occurred roughly an hour after I went to work. The one thing I have not tried yet is to swap out my power strip, but where it's located at makes it a pain to get to, and it's the same one I used on my old build without issue. I can run the tests myself on the hardware (I'm a computer tech by trade), but I was curious if anyone had encountered an issue similar to this before, so I could narrow down my testing parameters.

First of all, my specs: CPU: I5 4690K Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO GPU: MSI RX 480 Gaming X 4G Mobo: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition PSU: Cooler Master G650M 2 harddisks and 1 ssd OS: Windows 7 64 bit So here's my problem: My pc will randomly lose power while gaming and power on a few seconds afer it lost power. It just happend to me twice while playing euro truck simulator 2 multiplayer and has happened while playing battlefield 4. I'm thinking it's a PSU issue but I'm not really sure, hence this post.

My computer is about 5 years old my first computer I have built myself. Motherboard: Asus Z77 Sabertooth CPU: 3770K I7 Intel GPUs: GeForce GTX 980TI (main runs main screen) and 7970HD (secondary runs 2 screens) Ram: 16GB of ram - CML16GX3M4A1600C9 PSU: less than 4 months old 1000W Gold series RM1000i Corsair OS SSD: 256GB Cruical Storage Drive: 2 TB WD Green Game Drive: 1 TB Samsung SSD 850 EVO My computer has been shutting down on me my screen go straight to black screens and my fans in the computer goes out as well. After about 4 seconds POST is fine and then everything boots back up. Lights and all comes back on. My thought was the voltage of the PSU, but it new. SO I went into my bios to see the measured values and they look fine. While playing with the settings to change it back from manual overclocking to auto my screen went dead and so did my fan led in my case. 4 seconds later it comes back as if i pressed the power button. I think i narrowed it down to something with the wires. I say this because out of frustration while the computer was booting up. I let my hand free fall on to the case and... BOOM it went dead. SO my thought was... hmmm while doing the POST i'll just bang on it hard... and sure enough it went dead upon me striking it. I did this a few more times and the results were the same. UNTIL that is the last time tried it. It wont shut down no matter how hard (to my liking... i could do it wayyyy harder) i hit the frame. When i get the time. I will take it apart and re wire everything. Take everything out clean it. AND finally gives me a reason to change out the CPU Heatsink... I have a Thermaltake SpiralQ on it. It does the trick beautifully... but it has a slight vibration. Do you guys think there are other issues with this? What other test do you think i should perform? Comments?

Specs (for reference): Asus SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 FX-9590 H100i GTX 240mm AIO 20GB G.SKILL DDR3-1600 R9 390X Tri-X OC EVGA GQ-1000W 80+ Gold Here's how it started: I tried overclocking my FX-9590 on my AIO which didn't favor too well in temps. But then (just for the heck of it) I set the fan curve to 100% and it did fine. The entire rest of the time I used my PC on those settings that day I didn't see temps over 60C whilst I was running Cinebench R15 or playing games. All was well. The Problem: After a long and seemingly successful day at overclocking, I powered off. The next morning I went to turn it on and it gave a CPU Fan Error and then shut off before I could do anything. It has been doing that for the last 4 days now, and I haven't been able to get it to BIOS before it cuts all power (does so roughly 5 seconds after power on). What I've already tried: I tried clearing the RTC RAM and checking connections (everything lights up, and all of the fans are working). My question(s): Is there a way to clear my settings without getting to BIOS or booting to Windows (as those things aren't possible)? Would this fix it if there was a way to do so? What would you suggest? Is my pump dead? etc. Please HELP !!!

While watching a movie and playing RS, did my computer have a sudden power loss. Less than 2 seconds afterwards did it re-boot. (I don't know what causes the computer to re-boot after a power loss, and what makes it not re-boot.) This has happened 2 times now. Last Tuesday (10 PM local time) and just now (7 pm) My computer behaves like normal and then, sudden power cut. I believe it might be my PSU but I'm not sure. I have OCed my CPU (now running stock) without problems. Though, this time did I hear a sound just before my computer went black. I'm not sure how to explain the sound. It's sounded like a switch or something. Not something that went *Tick* My computer does make a tick sound while it shuts off and on, but this odd sound came before the tick my computer made. This is very random and unpredictable. Anyone have any idea how I can troubleshoot this? So, I'm getting random restarts, shutdowns. At the beginning I thought that was something wrong with OS or hard drive because i was getting an error ( 0xc000000f ) so i used system repair to fix this issue but that didn't quite work. I was still getting random restarts, sometimes it didn't even get to the windows loading screen. I took the HDD, plugged it into MY PC and looked for bad sectors but everything seemed to be okay. I thought "Screw it. I'm going to reinstall OS" but I'm going to check the PSU first, voltages weren't quite right so i changed it to another 300W PSU, but after a week or so i got random restarts again. PC insides are kinda old but the case is 3 times older, so maybe the power button worn out, I unplugged the front panel and used screwdriver to short the pins, but that's not it. I installed updates and used it for about 2 hours it seemed to be okay, then I put it to the AIDA64's system stability test, temps were okay. After few days again...same story...I've booted it to BIOS and what do I see? Restart! Okay so now I'm 90% sure that's something wrong with hardware. I checked the condensators just in case, they are okay, pins in the socket were okay last time i checked, paste was recently changed, issue is not there. As I said I changed the PSU so that's also not the issue, I've checked this PSU to. Then as i removed MOBO i saw something weird, PCB behind CPU socket is bent, I checked it with a ruler XD. But do you have any other ideas what could it be? Specs: CPU: G2030 RAM: 1 stick of 4GB DDR3 GPU: None HDD: Don't really know but 500GB

CPU: i7-8700k Motherboard: Asus maximus x hero Ram: Corsair LPX 16gb GPU: Asus strix 1080ti OC PSU: Corsair HX750 80 PLUS® Gold Certified CPU temps idle: 30-35c CPU temps in games: 50-60c GPU temps idle: 30-40c GPU temps in games: 65-80c My pc sometimes shut down automatically when i played games anyone knows what cause it ? I have never overclock, and i dont have any blue screens... Sometimes the problem is different, my pc shut down and then turn on automatically without doing nothing and sometimes i got black screen (no signal) while i played games and the gpu make a loud noise and stuck to rgb yellow color which before was to rainbow-cycle color. I turn off the pc and when i turn on again in the windows i got this notification: "display driver failed to start using Microsoft basic display driver instead" I notice this problem when i put a problematic hdd 2.5 from a laptop to my pc, and i in the bios i got a message like this: "Remove HDD because it will be crash" and the windows not boot, i wanted to format this hdd from a laptop because was not booting the windows in the laptop... I also try with hdd enclosure and my pc was freezes every time i plugin the the hdd enclosure and when i unplugged it my pc was unfreeze. I dont know why it's happens, it very strange problem i dont find any similar in the internet... Anyway it's possible this hdd to broke my pc ?

I've had a thread in the CPU/MB/MEM section here for some time trying to troubleshoot my pc. I'm now seeing a pattern that suggests neither of those are the problem. My Asus ROG Z270E has these troubleshooting LEDs. They each light up for a small amount of time on boot, so I guess they're POST codes, and none of them seem to indicate any problem. Either way, my problem is as following: I always power down my system AND turn the PSU off when I leave the house or go to sleep. Before using the PC I turn the PSU on and wait a few seconds. The RGB lights are all on. But on the first boot, the PSU clicks as normal, the lights go off as they always have, fans ramp up and.... it dies for two or three seconds, before the PSU clicks again and the PC boots to the American Megatrends setup screen. I press F1 and arrive at a reset BIOS. I change my settings (XMP and so on) and boot to Windows. It's fine, no damage, there as far as I can tell. This only happens on each first boot after power loss. After this it's fine, until I turn the psu off again. It's been like this for more than a week. halp pls

Hi Friends, I would like to consult experts here to see if we have any idea what is going on. I use NVMe M.2 SSD (Boot disk, Sata SSD (storage) and HHD (storage). I would occasionally (once a week+) face issue where my computer suddenly hangs while I'm using it. Upon restart, my boot M.2 SSD doesn't get detected. Likewise, sometimes when startup my computer, some SSD / M.2 would not get detected. I need to do a few power cycles (on/off the main power switch) before the SSD gets detected again. This issue only affects my SSD and not HDD. (On a system platform - Maximus Hero, 6700k, using Thermaltake 775W) Does anybody know what could be the problem? I am guessing its a PSU / Motherboard issue but do not know how to confirm / move forward in fault finding. Thanks !! Sam.

Right of the bat ... I'm having some issues with my build. I've built my computer roughly 6 months ago and i had no problems whatsoever at first, but a few months ago some problems started to occur. I first noticed this problem when i was gaming (playing The Forest) my computer would fall out and immediately after it would boot again. At first i thought that the game was bugging or that my drivers would play a part in this. Well i'm able to run tf2/gmod/... without any problem but even CSGO seems to trigger problems (occurs uppon launching a match). SPECS: MOBO: Asrock Fatal1ty 990fx Killer CPU: AMD FX 8230-Black edition (3.5 Ghz [Stock]) CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo Graphics Card: Sapphire tri x oc r9 290 RAM: Kingston HyperX Beast (2x8GB = 16GB) PSU: Coolermaster G750 M Case: Aerocool Xpredator X1 (Devil Edition) Fans: 2 front intake fans (CM jetflo 112), 1 bottom intake fan (stock) and 1 exhaust fan(CM jetflo 112). So being the tinkerer that I am, i started looking for people with the same problems. I found out that there were other who would have problems with their r9s, but noone had the exact same problem as me. They were all talking about bluscreens and drivers who would stop responding... Well after running some gpu intensive benchmarks (FurMark, unigine heaven) I was able to recreate the problem. Cinebench (cpu intensive) ran fine. To be sure i tested my rig with one of my brother's dims. Atleast for a while they seemed to hold, but after a few minutes the same problem would occur. So directly after i RMA'd my GPU and they ran some benchmarks(the same as me) and my cart was able to withhold them for 3 full days. So the problem not being my GPU, my best bet was to RMA my powersupply because it could be that my 12v rails would not be loading correctly. Again they rigged my PSU with a skylake dual r9 build and still it ran fine with no problems. I've reinstalled my drivers plenty of times(latest / beta) and i've even rolled back my OS from windows 10 to windows 8.1 (if this would even have made a difference but ...) Yeah any input would be helpfull ... (srry for the longer thread). EDIT: Temperatures are fairly low: GPU maxing out a 72 degrees celcius on furmark full hd preset, rest of the temperatures i can't remember and i can't check because my PSU is still in RMA

Hi everyone! I was wondering the following. Does a hard drive brake when, for example, the electricity in my house stops working and my hard drive doesn't get any power anymore. I'm setting up a server, but I don't have like some kind of car battery-like backup power supply. Although I live in Belgium (Europe), so I won't experience power outages because of my electricity supplier. But I have an old house, and when we (the family) use to much household machines at the same time, we lose all electricity. So is this something dangerous for my drives? (I obviously know that my server will stop working, but I want to know if my hard drives will be permanently broken.) Thanks!

I posted this on tomshardware and didn't get any responses. Hopefully Linus's grand army of loyal subject can help me out here Essentially my computer decides to randomly reboot without BSOD or anything, no warning, basically the same as me pressing the reset button. Things to note: []Occurs when playing DotA 2, I don't play anything else enough to notice. []Occurs randomly a few times a week []Does not seem to depend on the length of the gaming session, sometimes occurs within an hour and sometimes occurs within 8 hours. []Windows just reports a system power interruption []My hardware is nowhere near overheating from what I can tell. CPU hits a max of like 60C in prime95 and GPU hits 80C max in unigen valley benchmark.
