Shame on me, I didn’t know about the apparently common bug that does this when installing windows with multiple drives installed. My main system partition is on my primary SSD where I want it to be. My EFI boot partition is on my secondary SSD My recovery partition is on my 7 old HDD that’s probably a year or two out from failure. Ideally I would like all of these partitions on the previously mentioned primary SSD. Is there any easy way to move those partitions or create new ones for my main SSD? I really would prefer to not have to reinstall windows. I am using Windows 11, and otherwise my system is behaving completely normally. I just would really like this fixed.

I need to add the unallocated space to my main C: partition, but it's in front of the reserved partition that is highlighted in the screenshot, but I cannot move the partition so that the unallocated is in front of C: when I try to extent the C: it will not let me select the unallocated. Any ideas what could I do? Oh, I'm using Minitool partition wizard. Edit: Thanks everyone for the help. It looks like too much work for just 5gb so I'm gonna leave it as it is. I didn't try post marked as the solution but it looks like the way to go.

I recently purchased a new 2 TB SSD for my game library. I previously had games spread out on my previous 4 drives. I would like to wipe both 120 gb SSD's for a fresh slate on both of them. However, on Disk 3 used to have my windows 10 installation. I added a M.2 later and re-installed windows there, and later upgraded to windows 11. It appears that the system reserved and recovery partitions stayed behind on the old drive and are Active. Can I format disk 3 safely without borking my system? Also, I don't know why my M.2 has so many recovery partitions... TIA

As far as I know it is not (easily) possible to move/resize mounted partitions and that an active system will have mounted partition(s), but I thought I'd ask in case there is a way. The situation is as follows: Company laptop setup Win11+Ubuntu dual boot, but more space was allocated to Windows than requested. The Windows side is completely locked down and I have no permissions there. Disk Management and other partition tools are thus not possible and live boots are also locked behind an admin password. I have full administrator access in Linux so I essentially can do what I want there (agreed upon and intended) and they shrunk the Windows partition for me at my request, but because of the "extend to the left" issues and such that's where the saga ended. Now I foolishly assumed stuff was setup with LVM like I had on my previous laptop and that extending it in Linux would not be an issue, so I said I could take it from there. It was not, so now I'm stuck with the following unfortunate partitioning: What I would like is to move everything to the left such that the unallocated 99.37 GB can be attached to /home. Googling around I saw some hints that it might be possible to move stuff over by creating a new LVM, for example, in the unallocated space and copying over the existing swap and root partitions (perhaps in a special way)? I can always go for the nuclear option and just ask them to reinstall everything with the correct partitioning, but if there is a simpler way that would be nice. My questions: Could I avoid the mess and simply "extend to the left, shrink, repeat for every partition" without much trouble? If 1 is not possible, what would be the best approach for this if any?

I just upgraded from the 512 GB SSD that came in my laptop to a 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus. I didn't have a way to directly connect them, and I didn't have a large enough drive that I could wipe, so rather than cloning, I use the regular windows drive backup ISO to transfer everything. In doing so, it created a 512GB partition for everything. Should I just create a partition for the rest of the storage? Is there a way to enlarge the partition without deleting my data? Thank You!!!

Is there any software that allows me to download windows 10 os on multiple partitions on a external drive? Or any method that I can use to do this. I have tried to install windows 10 normally but it won't let me interact with an external drive. I tried using WinToUSB, while it worked, it was at the cost of wiping the drive first. I emailed this company asking if the professional version would allow me to directly install windows to partitions on a external hard drive without wiping it, and there is a option for the paid version of the software thats not suppose to wipe the drive and reformat, but they responded to me saying it wont work, and suggested bcdboot.exe. I looked into bcdboot.exe and it allows me to create new boot pathways, but the problem remains how do I successfully install windows onto separate partitions first then use bcdboot.exe? As for why I am trying to partition out an external drive, I am in the car mechanic industry, I am using a laptop to flash cars, but the software for each separate car manufacturer conflicts with each other, so normally you can only have 1 type of software on a computer at a time, and deleting and reinstalling software is time consuming and a pain. So if anyone has a solution, or better method to achieve this goal, I would love to hear it.

[im not sure if i post it correctly here and sometimes shouldnt on hard drive forums :'D ] just got idea cause i had old partition image with modded linux mint to do something with it. image was made on btrfs partition (which i made by a mistake ages ago) and the problem is - how to convert it PROPERLY to ext4 ? i already moved files on this partition to ext4 partition on external drive. what should i setup now? heard that on ARCH [not mint] is fstab file but doesnt exist on mint. os-prober in chroot doesnt work due to partition migration. what files i should edit to make it bootable? any commands (except of vim) ? should i install arch tools to complete move? note - its not system im using now. i just want to boot into it and im not on it currently links i was using to this moment : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=185542 (only this one because google shutted up his mouth )

Few days ago, I recover my ext4 Non-partitioned media with testdisk. I was excited because everything back again. But today I reboot my server, all the partition was gone on that disk again, then I need to re-run the superblock command fsck.ext4 -p -b 32768 -B 4096 /dev/sdb to recover again to get the partitions back. Hi, my HDD (D: Data) is not showing up anymore in the partition manager in windows ("Partition.png") but i can still access it from the explorer ("Explorer.png") and copy files from it at full speed. I first noticed that when I saw my second partition (B: Backup) on that drive fail with the dialog window with the option to format that partition showing up. I don't know why but i deleted that partition shortly after. The HDD was formated in a weird way: D:Data was in a sandwich between B:Backup. For some unknown reason I could only split B:Backup in two parts which were I think it's called a portable partition (the bar was a dark green color) - It's shown in "Partition old.png". I am very worried now that the D:Data partition is also going to fail - I have nowhere to back that data on there up because I dont have a big enough drive. [Note: B:Backup wasn't a place where i would backup the data from my PC, I had data from my old phone and laptop on there which weren't very important] [Note: The HDD is a 2TB WD Blue] If you need anything from the pictures translated to english or any additional information please just ask.

So, I have this issue where I recently switched half-way to linux and I have dual boot - Windows and Ubuntu. But, after I was pretty satisfied with linux, I wanted to install a game, but I realized that I do not have enough space on my hard drive partition. So, I made the windows partition smaller to fit that game, however, I can not expand my Linux partition to this unused space. Can somebody tell me how to expand that "ext4" filesystem? P.S. I have already tried GParted and normal pre-installed disk utility in ubuntu, neither of them can expand it. Also, sorry for my czech-ish interface, "volné místo" means "allocated"

For some reason I have two system reserved partitions on my system. One of them is on my nvme ssd which I have my OS, windows 10 pro, installed on and the other is on my hard drive. When I go to disk management I can delete/format the one on my ssd but not the one on my hard drive. I found this strange as I assumed that the one on the ssd would the one that I would need to keep considering that is where my OS is installed. Could someone help me with which one I can delete/format and how to go about doing so if there is no option in disk management. Many thanks.

Hi everyone, I noticed that there is some unallocated space on my secondary hard drive (disk 0 in the attached screenshot). I cannot do anything with it (creating a new partition or extending the existing partition) and most options are greyed out when I right click on the unallocated space while in disk manager. I was hoping to extend the existing large partition on disk 0. Any insights into the issue would be appreciated.

Drive 1 is a SATA M.2 SSD from one of my laptops It's the only drive that actually fits in that laptop that's why it's the boot drive I had to put my files on now I'm on my main Laptop and I'd like to access those files but I don't really know how I'm using Windows 10 Home and that drive has Windows 10 Home on it too Actually, now that I see this, I'm wondering why my other drive I have Archlinux on doesn't appear, not even in diskpart. (and I don't want to use linux to put those files from one drive on the other because I don't know how to use linux that well yet)

Hi, I recently bought a new nvme SSD (WD Blue SN570 500GB) to upgrade to from my old SATA Kingston A400 480GB SSD. I wanted to clone everything (especially the OS) to the new ssd and use the old for things that I don't access as often. When trying to clone it using MACRIUM REFLECT I found out that the two drives had different partition sizes, the old-512 and the new-4k. After 2 days of scouring the internet I still don't understand what it means or what to do about it. Anyone who knows if there is a way to fix this and how to do it? would love some help with this btw I understand a bit of technical stuff, but am still a newbie so chill with the technical terms plzz (btw, btw sorry If I used the forum wrong, It's my first time)

I currently have a Adata 1TB NVMe SSD (3000 MB/s Read/Write) and I am adding a WD Green 1 TB SATA SSD (545 MB/s Read/Write). I want to expand my existing C: partition into the new WD Green drive to make one large 2 TB Partition under one address. Is this a bad idea because of the difference in read/write speed? Would it be a better idea to make two different partitions? A little bit of a performance hit is ok but if it completely limits the speed to the slower drive speed (545 MB/s) then I definitely don't want to do that. If I do need to make 2 partitions, do any of y'all know of any software that will make it more convenient to have 2 partitions on windows I am running Windows 10 Home 64 Bit

Hello, I recently bought a new NVME (250GB) to function as a boot device, so i can boot faster. I want to move the OS but not the programs or the files in my HDD since they are about 600GB, and obviously won't fit in my new drive. Is there a way of taking just the OS and leave everything else behind? or maybe, can I install a new clean Windows in the new drive and make it recognize my installed programs in the HDD?

Hello All, I'm not a crazy computer wiz, I've built a couple PCs and fiddled around with some programming but nothing major. I just got a new laptop, a Razer Blade 15, but I want to use it for work and gaming. I wanted to partition the drive into two sections, one with about 150gb of space for work (I don't need a lot because most items are in the cloud or very small), and another drive with the rest of the storage for gaming. When I boot up my laptop I want to be presented with the option to choose the gaming partition, or the work partition. Is this possible and can anyone point me in the right direction or let me know how to do this? It would be very much appreciated.

So here's my issue... I've basically just cloned my old SSD to my new one which has much more free space. The old one is the Kingston and the new being the Samsung. I've just booted it up the correct way, and it has given me these separate partitions, including the name of the old drive. I was wondering if there may be a way to combine it all under one?

For who knows what reason, Windows 10 decided to make a 100GB partition from my 1TB hard drive. Nothing is on it but the now empty partition is BEFORE the rest of the data on my drive. I know that I can extend a partition to leave the whole drive as 1 location, but through disk management that would mean extending the empty data using the rest of the hard drive that has data on it. Will this effectively wipe the drive? I don't want to mess with all the programs / games / personal data that's on it. Virtually everything besides the OS. Here is an image of what I'm dealing with and why I'm concerned (Deleted the partition before taking the screen shot so it's just unallocated. It was set to F: by Windows before hand) [ Screenshot of Disk Management ] I know I could also use a 3rd party disk management tool to move the partitions but from experience that can take an whole day to do. Thanks for looking and any information you can provide.

Im trying to mount a partition on my HDD so I can use it for a steam library. I've followed some guides, but it appears to be mounting my 1.3TB partition i use to do the same thing on windows, but I seems I did it correctly and it should be using the ~500GB partition? You can see I've clearly added sdb2, but my file system pops up with the files I know are on sdb4. Maybe it has something to do with me mounting to "/hdd"? Im new to Linux, so thorough explanation on exactly how to fix would be awesome, thanks!
