TLDR; I have a new computer that needs all the software (Quickbooks 2008 and other old accounting software) from the old computer onto the new computer. No interest in upgrading to new versions. Can't find the downloads. What do I do? Mother-in-law got a new computer for Christmas. Yay! Now I need to set it up. Yay! All joking aside... She happily uses some older accounting software, like quickbooks 2008, on windows 10 and has zero desire to move to any current versions. She is ok with moving to WIN11 (currently on the new PC) but doesn't need to. I need to get this software and a couple others, as well as any relevant saved data from these programs, onto the new PC. Do not have the original CD that was used when the software was purchased. According to any forum posts I find, and from what I can find, the oldest download available is 2010. What do I do? Current thoughts: - I have a SATA to USB cable. Can I just pull the drive from the old computer, plug into the new computer, and get the program files that way? - Any other way this cable could be of use? - Using a cloning software to clone the drive? They incur an additional cost but if its the only way it is what it is. Still not sure what the best way to go about this is. Want to improve quality of life, not over complicate it

Hi Guys, I just want to share my recently assembled sleeper PC. My PC case broke and i don't have enough money to buy a new one atm. I saw and i bought a really cheap old case and decided to give it a go. Got inspired by Linus' videos on creating sleeper PC. Please share Your thoughts, criticize if You must so I can improve it. I have not got much money but I'm really into computers and gaming, and I finally got my setup working, (which is an HP Compaq 6005 from 2011?) And I have been using an amd Radeon HD r5 230 (1gd ddr3) from 2013 I think, for about 3 years, and through HDMI, it only shows on greyscale, (see photos). Can it be fixed? (Also I am using an athlon 2 from 2009, 7gb ddr3 ram) It's also all I can afford. So I can't buy a new pc.

Building a Reliable Backup And Storage Machine
MosesVRR posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Hello, I recently had a portable hard drive fail which resulted in losing access to all my data. I had used the drive to store images, videos, games and other stuff I felt important to store which is now unfortunately all gone. Before this, I never knew it was a rule of thumb to have backups for a backup as I believed that it would never die in such a way and I know now that thinking so was a costly mistake. This made me start looking into various home server and backup solutions especially ones that I build myself from used and refurbished desktops as I would like to keep costs to a minimum and for the learning experience before I move on to more expensive solutions. I want to build a storage that I would mainly use simply for backing up or storing files and data that exists separately from my PC which I do not need to access remotely. Right now, I have 2TB of data that exists only on a portable hard drive and I want something reliable where I can move all that data into. I would like to future proof the system with at least 8TB of pure storage (meaning I would have 8TB of data to backup or store in the near future) and I never want it to fail (meaning I don't want to lose all my data because of a mechanical or software failure). I therefore, request advice or guidance on understanding how I can do so using an old or used desktop (or parts) that I would source from local used stores and online retailers. I want help with understanding the hardware and software (if applicable) requirements for building such a device. How many drives should I get? How big should each drive be? I read about something called a NAS, is this something I should consider if I only (I think) need extended storage? Is it possible to connect to the machine from my pc and not buy a separate monitor? If so, how do I access it (I was unable to find proper information on using a pc to connect to another pc)? Is it just by using a LAN cable? I am a complete beginner to storage and backup in general and I am open to elaborating anything you may feel I may have not explained or considered. Thank you for reading and I appreciate any advice you may have for me. -
I recently got a very old PC off ebay for 20 bucks. Previous owner says the last time he used it everything worked (that was one year ago). My problem is: The PC turns on, one short beep and then nothing; no graphics output. Here is the Hardware list: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-K8NS (rev. 2.0), specs here CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ RAM: 2 Sticks Infineon 512MB PC400 GPU: GeForce FX5200 128 M Storage: Maxtor Diamond Max Plu 9 200GB SATA HDD (Probably Windows 7 but not sure) Here is a list of what I tried: tried various VGA/DVI cables but no success. Monitor works with HDMI, so I don't think that the monitor is the problem here. I have no other VGA source to test it with. cleared CMOS removed Disk Drive and Floppy Drive reseated GPU, RAM, CPU, Storage disconnected storage tried to boot from usb stick got another GPU (ATI Radeon 9200SE 128M) tried CTL+F1 to get into BIOS but no luck PLEASE HELP! I am out of ideas at this point. My original plan with this system was to put batocera on it (admit, because of the video) but it turned to troubleshooting maze instead.

I have this old dell Optiplex 7080 SFF that I don't use anymore but want to with a dell intel 8th gen motherboard and I'm looking to upgrade the case on this because it came with a 200w dell psu and the case won't fit other PSUs. I'm wondering if anyone knows if the hardware in this can be put into a better case or how I could check if it would fit into one before buying it?

Hi, my friend is giving me a PC with some 2gen AMD Ryzen 5 CPU, Dell AMD Radeon HD 7770 (2gb vram),8gb RAM and a big tower case and I was thinking about putting it in my work room and use it to replace my crappy WD NAS box. With all of this, I was thinking about using it as a NAS and maybe for running a Windows 10 (modded Lite iso) or Arch Linux VM on that system. I also have a Dell OEM AMD Radeon Pro WX5100 8gb laying around that I could use it for the VM and I have 4x 4tb NAS HDD's (unused) that I could use here. As far as I seen, I could throw out the DVD drive and get 5 free SATA slots for the NAS HDD's and my SanDisk 120gb SSD. What are my options here in terms of the OS, where I don't need to pay for licenses? Would it be worth it replacing the 2x4gb HP RAM modules for something from more reputable brands like Corsair, Crucial or G.Skill? Before anyone asks, my work room is connected to solar panels on top of my shed and this is why I don't care about power consumption

I found an old PC which was designed to run on Windows 98 SE. It had XP on it and after poking around a bit I wanted to put 98 SE on it. I went to https://winworldpc.com/ and picked the OEM Full ISO then burned it to a CD. I booted from that CD and started the installer which wiped the drive and formatted the partition. It then told me to put the Windows 98 boot disk into drive A and restart the computer but there are a few issues with this. This PC has no floppy drive bay or even a drive A, and I have 0 way to even make a floppy if I even had access to one. Looking around online people keep saying you don't need the floppy to install 98 and can do it all from the CD but I can't figure out how, I need help.

I recently started to repair my old PC as a fun project. After few weeks of troubleshooting, I'm finally able to start the PC. Now I'm confused about OS. The PC is not very high end one. It has following Configuration: 1. 2 GB ddr2 Ram 800Mhz 2. 350GB HDD 3. AMD sempron 2.5Ghz Processor. Please suggest me few OS for the PC. The PC is only for general purpose like blasting music on the sound system or doing some admin work.

Greetings everybody, *This is my first post, feel free to reprehend or point me to the right direction/place/customs. Sorry in advance if I somehow hurt the community* *I found a somewhat similar thread here (good-graphics-card-for-my-system-pci-e-20[...]), but, I'm still unsure...* We have and old computer that is going to be used for gaming by one family member, and as such we are in need of replacing the graphic card, not only because of it's specs but because it is about to fail (flickering). Can you please suggest the best replacement card ? To my understating, the PCI interface is backwards compatible, so almost any GPU would work, but I would like to buy something relatively cheap and at the same time capable of giving the best performance given the specs and probable bottlenecks below. (The overall ideia is to make do with the current hardware, replacing only the GPU, though feel free to add any of your thoughts on the matter) Specs and Games: Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E84000 Socket 775LGA Motherboard: ASUSTek P5KPL-C/1600 - Rev 1.xx; PCI-Express 1.0; Link: https://www.asus.com/supportonly/P5KPL-C1600/; Graphic Interface: Release Date: 2008; NVIDIA Geforce 8800GT - CodeName G92 Revision A2; PCI-Express 2.0; DirectX: 10; OpenGL: 3.3; OpenCL: 1.1; Clock: 600Mhz Power Supply: ATX Power X 500w Px500; SKU: PX500B1403286; Fan 120mm; Conectors: - 01 Atx 20+4 Pin - 01 ATX12V - 02 Sata - 02 Ide - 01 Pci Express Memory: Kingston DDR2 Dual Channel 4GB (2x2GB) Games that will be played: - Farming Simulator 19 (Requires DX11) - Steam recommends Nvidia Geforce GTX 650, AMD Radeon HD 7770 graphics card or better (min. 2 GB VRAM) - Farming Simulator 22 (Requires DX11) - Steam recommends GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon R7 265 or better (min 2GB VRAM) - Car mechanic - Steam recommends NVidia GeForce GTX 660 2GB - EuroTruck Simulator 2 (Requires DX11) - Steam recommends GeForce GTS 450-class One of my main problems in understanding this whole enterprise, is finding the correct ratio of memory bus width vs memory vs processing units vs memory clock speed vs GPU clock speed .. and so forth .. Considering the games, and probably the MODs and maps to come, a GPU with higher memory seems to be the best choice, but then again I have no idea on how to foresee the bottlenecks ... much less calculate the necessary amount of power for the PSU or the ventilation. I'm far less versed in AMD GPUs than in Nvdia, still I came up with some options, but I would love to hear your opinion on the matter, since I'm completely out of my league here. Radeon R7 240 (2gb 128bits Gddr5) Memory: 2GB DDR5 Bus: 128 Clock: 780MHZ PCI: 3.0 Reference Link:(After reading the community guidelines, I'm still unsure if external links are allowed, in any case I wasn't able to find a non commercial link to this model DEX-PV-04A) AFOX GeForce-GT-710 (GF119 ) Memory: 2GB DDR3 Bus: 64Bit Clock: 810MHz PCI: 2.0 Reference Link: http://gpuboss.com/graphics-card/GeForce-GT-710 AFOX GeForce GT730 LP Memory: 4GB DDR3 Bus: 128Bit Clock: 700 MHz PCI: 2.0 Reference Link: http://www.afox-corp.com/en/products_details.asp?proid=289 AFOX GeForce Gt 1030 Memory: 2GB DDR5 Bus: 64Bit Clock: 1277 MHz PCI: 3.0 Reference Link: https://www.dateks.lv/en/cenas/videokartes/568155-afox-geforce-gt-1030-2gb-ddr5-low-profile Ps. I searched these GPUs considering localized prices on my country and overall availability. Please don't feel obligated to relate to exact price range, since there's no easy parameter to make a price conversion among our probable markets, I will look up each and every suggestion you make and afterwards try to find the best option within budget and market. In advance, thank you very much for you help and attention.. Cordially, Mileto.

Windows 10 likes to flash a white then black screen randomly
Duo01 posted a topic in Troubleshooting
Hi, I'm back again with another PC problem- what a shocker. Backstory: I recently brought out a 10-11 year old computer I had around (that yes I still cleaned and took care of even though it wasn't used as much) that admittedly is pretty slow so that it could become the school work computer for a family member. (HP Compaq Presario with 3 gb ram, AMD Athlon II I think and a NVIDA GeForce graphics card that did run 7 and I upgraded it to 10 as it was probably the most unsafe thing on the planet, it was stuck on SP1 and I knew there was malware from the previous owner and I couldn't get it connected to the internet to get malwarebytes, and just so you know, no I couldn't figure out how to reinstall windows because it didn't like the flash drive or anything for that matter. Side note: I could have chosen a Linux distro and I might due to the age of the system maybe..kinda worried about the driver issues there too?) Issue So recently, I've been dealing with it randomly showing a white screen and a black screen with a loading cursor and not doing anything else causing me to have to reboot the system... Over... And over... And over. I'm pretty sure it's NVIDA drivers (because it's always NVIDA that's the issue espically with graphics ) but I'm willing to put it out there to see if anyone could possibly point out a reason if it's not the graphics drivers. Another thing I think it COULD be was the screensaver previously set in Windows 7 that could be breaking the system tho im really unsure...)- 1 reply

Good morning/evening everyone, I had this old server that I was running Plex server, for network file sharing, hosting some websites and stuff like this but now that I got a quite powerful laptop I do not need my old PC and I was thinking of making 2 servers in a Rack. I want now with this upgrade to have Docker containers too, so I was thinking to make the old server with Linux running the websites and all the containers that I want, as for the other server to make it with Windows server to handle the file sharing stuff. So I would like to give me your opinions, suggestions and ideas, how should I do it, is it a good idea? i got some hand me downs from my uncle's office and the PCs are as follows: 1) Lenovo ThinkCentre M58p 2) Dell Optiplex 755 The CPUs are as listed below Lenovo: Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8400 Dell: Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6750 I'll edit in more specs as i go through the systems and as requested. I have decided that the Lenovo will be my main as i find it easier to work in with the swiveling side-panels and it just looks cleaner as well. The Dell... maybe a Plex server? I do have quite the amount of anime i'd like to stream over my home wifi or maybe a home server/remote pc/HTPC ? or it could just be the family pc i suppose.. I have done some rudimentary cleaning for both PCs and i plan on getting more supplies to clean and repaste the heatsinks. i wanted to ask a few questions regarding upgrades. First is obviously going to be an ssd. Maybe a 240GB Crucial MX500 for the Lenovo and a 120GB Silicon Power A55 for the Dell as a start. The second is the CPU & GPU. The socket for the Lenovo is the LGA775 and the Dell is the PLGA775. I want to know what is the top/best/max CPU i can drop into the same socket without having to do any modding. My searching has pulled up the Q9650 which i've found on ebay for 40USD. Someone in a forum mentioned being able to mod the socket for a Xeon but im not ready for modding so i'll pass but id like to know my options all the same. The GPU is interesting, i need some advice with this one as im not too familiar with GPUs prior to Nvidia's 1000 series and AMD's 5000 series. I will need some advice with this part. My budget for the GPU would be i'd say ~100USD. I'd like to do some gaming at least. if possible id like to know what is the top/max/best GPU i can get before bottlenecking. Naturally i will need to check pricing and availability in my region. other things im going to try include: RAM (i'll probably do 16GBs of the max speed the CPU supports), Networking? (better ethernet, wifi maybe?), One thing im really looking forward to is doing my very first OS install. I'll try Windows 10 first and see how it performs with games, browsing and so on. Then my first ever foray into Linux, i'd probably go for Pop! OS. These are the main upgrades that come to my mind, i plan on doing some other stuff like replacing the disk drive with a USB hub and so on. I'd like to hear your thought as well on any other upgrades i should do.

Hello. I have an old pc that I want to upgrade the motherboard to one that has USB 3.0. So far the options that I have found on pcpartpicker is making me a bit confuse. What would be the best motherboard for an Intel Pentium e5700 @ 3.00 GHz? I have change the case but I realized that the motherboard does not have 3.0 usb. I added a BEYIMEI 5-Port PCI Express Expansion Card with 19 pin connector. However if the motherboard have it included, it would be great. That way I can Clear space for a dedicated gpu, since I added a WiFi and Bluetooth card. On that note, Would a GTX 760 would work for this?

Hello everyone, I hope this is the right place to post, new to the forum here. I have an old gaming pc which has been collecting dust for a while now. (specs below). I want to either use it or get rid of it, but selling doesn't really seem like a viable option as the parts would not be worth anything anymore. Any other ideas of cool things to do with the pc? Would anyone be interested in these legacy parts? Case: Antec 1200 Motherboard: Biostar T-power I45 Processor: Intel core2duo E8500 RAM: 2x2GB DDR2 - PC2 8500 Reaper Videocard: NVidia geforce 9800 GTX (512mb) N1996 (MSI) It also has an audiocard, not sure what it is, will find out later.

I stumbled onto a couple of old FirePro V4900 that was about to be discarded, but decided to take it for myself. My dad has a rebuilt Dell Optiplex 790 (Core i5-2500, 8GB RAM, SSD+HDD, Ubuntu) where I transplanted it onto an old Cooler Master (circa 2013; probably N300). I put one of the GPUs there (cuz why not?). He primarily just watches videos on it (YouTube, Netflix, Crave, etc.). I figure the GPU might be able to help the CPU out in the long run (by reducing the stress), giving that PC a little more life. I'm now wondering if my assumption is correct?
