  1. Budget (including currency): 1500€ Country: The Netherlands Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: adobe Creative Cloud and heavy games Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I have allready some parts of the list. I have every party except the memory, graphics card and the powersupply. Now was my question is this power supply high enough.
  2. Budget (including currency): ~$5,000 Country: US Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: 3x Type-2 VMs (2 running windows 10 pro, 1 running full kali linux) && the Main OS the VMs are run on as Windows 10 pro w/ WinKex running the Kali-linux-everything metapackage in seamless mode w/ sound support. All windows VM's need to be able to run productivity applications such as Photoshop, Audition, mail, OBS, and a external Voice mod controller to simulate different voices for different users, just to name a few. The Windows VMs as well as the Main OS need to be able to utilize multiple browsers (Edge, Firefox and Firefox Dev Edition, Opera GX in particular) The Kali VM needs the highest Network speeds out of all VMs by about 50% while the others are at about the same speeds. All VMs are expected to run a VPN client as well. ALL of these are expected to be run fairly as effecient as a single 4th gen i7 haswell CPU does with a single NonVM Windows 10 OS does natively or better.. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): 3x 4K monitors via display port and 1 48"oled TV via HDMI 2.1 will be used to separate the VMs into their own displays, the TV will be used as an in-between to run and rearrange VM's etc. Refresh rates @ 60fps or better each @ 4k or better Resolution. Advice needed to suggest what hardware would be best/most bang for buck for this rig. No gaming needed. I would like to know how many cores I need on the cpu (no preference for brand, but my testing has concluded that the AMD brand is better for this workload but feel free to explain if I'm wrong and why as I don't care as much about brand loyalty, only efficiency and functionality.), what kinds of storage and RAM (I hope to give all VM's and the base machine about 1-2TB's of storage and ~16Gb of ram on All systems, VM and Base OS), etc. as TBH, I'm more of a software nerd not a hardware geek. Thanks! Current build plans attached, but as I have stated above, I don't know much about hardware, only software, and I am allocating ~6 cores/~12 threads to each vm and the majority rest to the main OS.. Help me to make sure I'm doing this right and make sure I get enough and if I need more please let me know as the Budget is loose on this (though I wish to make it as cost effective as possible) Much appreciated ahead of time, Thank you again!

  4. Seriously game devs, it's not that hard. Get with the times. This would be part of the main class And this would be the chief graphics object from which near every other graphics object should inherit from. There, 80+% of your CPU-side optimization done for you. Quit your belly aching, start over, and do it right this time. There's no excuse when it's this easy.
  5. Good day to all! I am a little bit curious about this scenario. We all know that applying high voltage to the cpu will increase its temperature (greater than idle temperatures). I have Core i5 4790 which runs at 0.699 volts at 800mhz idle, when using stress tester like aida64, its voltage will go up around 1.125volts at 3.6 - 4ghz. Now, my question; Why is it that if I set the power options to "high performance" (sets the minimum cpu freq to 100%) on windows still gave me the exact same idle temperature at 32 deg. C even the cpu is constantly receiving 1.125 volts all the time? ha ha. I know its a little bit silly question but please bear with me.
  6. Hi Guys, I'm looking to get back into programming - I did a bit at uni and thought ...why not build the computer myself too? It doesn't need to be super duper high spec but I would like to have the option to upgrade as I go (see if I take to it etc.). I was thinking on this basis that maybe I should invest in a good motherboard/SSD/...HD and then just decent other second hand components. - I'd like to be able to overclock - to learn about it more than for performance gains ...to begin with anyway - I don't mind second hand ... or third hand for that matter (big price reduction?) - I'd like to have multiple cores and threads (as many as possible within reason) because I enjoyed learning MPI/OpenMP at uni and I want to play around with them - I will be running linux ubuntu (unless you have a better suggestion) - I DO NOT want to use this computer for gaming but I would eventually like to learn CUDA ... if you know what I mean - I will have 2 monitors Budget: ~£770.24 at the time of posting, preferably lower obvs ...but can go higher if I'm asking the impossible. (I live in the UK but that's around $1000) Spec: I bow to your superior wisdom ...but I was thinking an i7-6700/i7-6800 as a starting point. I would really appreciate any help from you kind, knowledgeable, attractive folk and I apologise if I have posed this request in an ignorant manner (no doubt the internet will subtly let me know if this is the case).
  7. So I am looking forward to build a workstation PC which will mostly have CPU intensive task and mathematical calculations https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xnRRd6 Here is the list of parts excluding the Case and stuff like that Is there anything that i should change? Thanks
  8. Hi all, I've been searching high and low for a 15"ish laptop to take with me on work projects that aren't nearby enough for me to take my desktop setup with me. I work in software like Unreal Engine 4, vvvv, Ableton Live, Max, Derivative TouchDesigner, Resolume, Photoshop, After Effects, Cinema 4D, etc. I know almost none of these are laptop friendly, but I know VJ's who run some of these things off Macbook Pro (not feeling the new one, seems kinda weak). Portable workstations (Lenovo, Dell, HP) seem to have everything I'd need, until I see the GPU specs, and while the gaming laptops tick the GPU box, they are really quite obnoxious looking (ROG and MSI) and I wouldn't feel great carrying one into a meeting with a client without skinning everything (or a million pieces of black tape). Of course, performance is more important in this, but my ideal scenario is a black box with serious guts and a great screen. Possibly too much to ask, but I've seen some great, in depth answers on here and I thought I'd give it a try. Thanks in advance everyone!
  9. I was wondering is it was possible to cluster 2 or more high end computers, and if so what would it be like to use?
  10. Is it possible to toggle between balanced and high performance power plan using a batch file ? powercfg -s 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e and powercfg -s 8c5e7fda-e8bf-4a96-9a85-a6e23a8c635c When set to balanced, toggle to high performance and when set to high performance, toggle to balanced. Without creating 2 differents batch files.
  11. Hey everyone! I have saved enough money to buy myself a new PC but don‘t quite know what and how. I want a small mini ITX PC with either an RTX 2080 or GTX 1080 ti and a good cpu preferably from Intel. I need it to be portable since my parents are divorced and I want to take from house to house. I have never built a PC. I know thermals are an issue with these small PCs and I don‘t quite know if an RTX 2080 makes sense in such a small pc. Any ideas what I should go for? Are there any guides/tutorials since the last thing I want is to mess it up? My max budget is 1600€ (keep in mind that rtx 2080 is around 620€ in EU). Thanks in advance!
  12. Hi all. I'm planning a new build to update my old home ESXI system with something much better. My current system is: quad-core Q6600 4gb of DDR2 ram 1TB SATA HD 2 Intel 1Gbit nics An old Nvidia card This thing is eating power, 140w of power and it feels like this is at idle as the two running hosts are not doing much. The new spec I am aiming for: 6 - 8 cores minimum 16 - 32gb of ram 1 - 2 NVMe M.2 drives 256GB is loads of space Onboard simple graphics out of band KVM management over IP 2 x 10Gbit nics 1 x PCI slot Case, mini-ITX size 1u rack Cooling, Passive if possible and fanless I don't want much do I What I have learnt so far: An Intel i7 7740x or an AMD Ryzen 1700x could be good options for a processor. Is an Atom C3758 a bad idea I should look at an 80 Plus gold or better PSU SSD's will greatly help my Power consumption targets I'm kind of looking for a lower cost more mainstream, better ESXI supported Supermicro A2SDi-H-TP4F or Gigabyte MA10-ST0. Apart from the cost and the processor type these board ticks all the boxes. My questions: Which processor should I be looking for? I'm looking for a high core count with hypervisor support that is very power efficient Once the CPU is selected we can look for a motherboard but do we have any combinations known to be low power high performance Is there a system builder who specialises in low power high-performance systems Does anyone know of a specialist website where low power high performance is their game? Any support here is well received, this should be a fun build. So team, what do we think? Thanks
  13. Hey guys I've decided that my 9900k 5.0ghz oc is going to be enough for me for the next 3-4 years so il be missing out on pcie-gen4 for awhile so I would like to get max performance I can get so I got a 1TB evo plus for my boot drive where I will also have my main games. I have optane for my 4tb library and am really impressed what just 15 bucks did for my hdd. My question is I know that NVME has better throughput especially at queue depth 32 but from what I've read is that optane performs seemingly 100 times better in best/worst case scenarios at qd1(queue depth 1). I've also read games are almost always qd1. I've researched people combining them and haven't come up with anything useful. What are your thoughts on this and should I go with 32gb or 64gb I have 32gb of ram 3000mhz cl15 (not that fast I know but my 3600 oc gave me ptsd and im still trying to get the courage to oc it again) tl;dr please tell me what to know about combining them or why not Thanks for any help.
  14. I have a Gigabyte P55W v6 laptop and it has a 24" monitor connected to it via HDMI. Friday, the 7th of September, I've started having an issue. While I was playing PUBG or SCUM, laptop jumps to Power Saver mode for a brief moment of 3-5 seconds and goes back to High Performance. I can surely say that laptop is switching from High Performance to Power Saver. I've opened Power Options and every time the screen blinked, I saw it change to Power Saver. The screen blinks due to different brightness settings on High Performance and Power Saver. This issue was not consistent. In PUBG for example, I usually play the first match without any issues. Switching is happening when the parachute opens in the second match and on a few random occasions. It does the same thing in all of the upcoming matches. The same weekend I also played SCUM on Steam and my friend started watching my broadcast via Steam and mode switching happened like every 1-2 minutes. These switches are causing a drastic FPS drop in both games which is very frustrating. Hence the need for a solution. Also, it is important to mention that nothing of this sort happens while I am not gaming. I kinda had a few hours of issueless gaming when I did this: "First open the power settings, then click "change plan settings" beside the "balanced (recommended)" option. Then click "change advanced power settings" on the screen that appears. In the dialog box, scroll down and expand "Multimedia settings". Then expand "when playing video" and then change the "plugged in" option to balanced." I've also used FurMark software to stress test the GPU and the CPU.Based on the information in the Task Manager both GPU and CPU had 100% load most of the time during the 25 minute test. During this test Power plan switched exactly 0 times. Here's a video! I've used OBS to record three windows - Task Manager, Power Options window and Open Hardware Monitor software while I'm playing Scum. As You can see in the vid, performance drops occur very often due to OBS being in use. I switched Scum to Windowed mode an realized that Battery icon in the bottom right corner is changing from "Charging" to "Battery" but only for a second. On Sunday, September 16th I woke up and played Rainbow Six Siege for 3 hours with a 20 minute break to browse the web and watch a few YouTube videos while the game was still in the background. During this time I had no issues whatsoever! But I must say that GPU load at that time was above 95% and CPU was at about 70-80%. After that I bought Battlefield 1 and started downloading it. While it was downloading I did all my regular stuff - was watching YouTube videos, watch and episode of Psych on Prime Video, chatted in Discord, browsed the web using Goggle Chrome. At one point the game was "Playable" and I finished the mandatory Single Player mission. No issues there! Unfortunately Multiplayer option was not available - had to wait for the whole game to download so I did and continued the web browsing session. When download of BF1 was finished I jumped right into a quick match to play as a Medic (love to help people) and in the time span of 20 minutes laptop switched to Power Saver mode about 10 times. After this match I restarted my laptop and without opening anything else, I started BF1 and jumped into my second match and again as a Medic! Played for 2 hours straight with any issues. Today I came home from work. Watched one more episode of Psych and ate my meal. Watched some YouTube videos and decided to play BF1. Restarted my laptop, run the game. Power Mode started switching after 15 minutes of game time. Tried to restart it but no luck there - after the map loads, laptop is switching to Power Saver and back to High Performance withing second. Game is practically unplayable. Now when I open BF1 and start a match, laptop switches to Power Saver mode every 20-30 seconds. I've attached a battery report from the weekend it all started. battery-report.html Any ideas what could be the problem and possible solution?

  16. hey everyone, i currently have an imac with i7 870 and iam thinking all the time if it's worth the upgrade to xeon x3480 for the price of 80$ ? iam using my imac for general heavy tasks and workstation activities (like video editing- programming - app development - CAD designing - graphical designing etc...) thanks in advance
  17. Hi guys! I'm going to make a VR flight simulator. I work for MAF, a non-profit whose aircraft fly in developing countries to make aid accessible. We want to give visitors at events a taste of flying in the jungle, like our pilots do. 1. Budget & Location I've got a budget of EUR 3000, with room to add EUR 500, if absolutely necessary. Since we are non-profit, we do not want to spend more than needed. This budget will include the goggles, maybe a monitor (to let other people see what the person in the hot seat is seeing) and some other paraphernalia. We're located in the Netherlands. 2. Aim Well... uhm, VR flight simming. So high enough framerates and pretty scenery are important. We'll probably use either Aerofly FS 2 or X-Plane. Aerofly is less performance heavy and very beautiful, but still limited in its options. 3. Monitors So this will primarily be the goggles and a large but not very high resolution monitor. 4. Peripherals We've got standard computer peripherals and monitors. As for any other peripherals, that'll be the goggles and controllers. I'm still unsettled on whether using Touch controllers or a fixed yoke is the best bet. 5. Why are you upgrading? Because the old flight sim is just not a great experience anymore. And the pc can't really handle anything very well. I might use the case... but maybe a pre-built will be better? I'd love to build, but with GPU-prices being what they are, I don't know what my best bet will be. Maybe 980ti's? Thanks for helping, everyone!
  18. Hey, This is my first computer build and I have done a lot of research about these parts but I am still concerned that it might either be overkill or underkill for what I am using it for. Let me know what you think. Parts list PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/gLYYXH CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i v2 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler Motherboard: Asus Z170-DELUXE ATX LGA1151 Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB SC Gaming ACX 3.0 Video Card (Superclocked) Case: Corsair 750D ATX Full Tower Case Power Supply: Cooler Master 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home Full - USB 32/64-bit Case Fan: Corsair CO-9050016-BLED 52.2 CFM 120mm Fans Case Fan: Corsair SP120 57.2 CFM 120mm Fan Total: $1789.15 My main uses for this device will be... Adobe Photoshop (working with quad HD possibly 4k Photography) Artrage Beamng.drive (Highest settings at 60fps) Subnautica (Highest settings at 60fps) Mafia 3 (Highest Settings) Gears Of War 4 (Highest Settings) Grand Theft Auto 5 (highest settings at 60fps) No Man's Sky (highest settings at 60fps) VR (Oculus rift/HTC vive in the future) Obviously I won't be using it for much. My biggest concern as far as CPU and GPU is for Beamng.drive, No Man's Sky, and Photoshop. I'm just trying to get the best performance without spending hellish amounts. Let me know what you think. Is this overkill or am I hitting all the right points. I am totally open to suggestions. Thanks.
  19. Good afternoon. I am looking for recommendations for a mini itx entry level gamer apu system for my little brother and I to do together. Something not too expensive, but also I want my little man to have a solid first gaming computer. Thank you for your help.
  20. building a new Computer for myself and the family. so far I have: thermaltake Chasar A71 case (full tower) EVGA G1 750W PSU (yes I know it's a G1... (will try it for now, then possibly upgrade to the G2, or bigger should the SLI980 need it) Gigabyte Z170A UD5 mobo Cooler master H212 cpu cooler still to order (waiting on tax return. Sm951 256gb M.2 SSD in RAID 0, or I may just go with 1 Samsung 950 PRO 256gb. i7 6700K 16GB of corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB sticks (black), leaving upgradeable to 32GB. 1 500GB SSD scratch drive (dunno which one, doesnt have to be lightning fast, just a scratch drive for editing/short term storage before going onto my 4TB+ NAS, or getting burned. this will comprise the system and will run with onboard graphics until I build up a little scratch to buy either a 980ti (future SLI), or Titan X(single) with a decent 4k monitor. waiting on new releases from AMD/NVIDIA.
  21. I need help building a powerful workstation. 1. Budget & Location I work in Kenya. I do not have a set budget. 2. Aim The company I work for needs 4 computers to render aerial photos using INPHO. The recommendations per CPU were: 16 cores (with HT) 32GB RAM 15TB HDD (to stitch the several large images) Air Cooled (as silent as possible) NVidia Quadro K2200 or better 24" monitor with color calibration 3. Monitors We intend to connect 2 monitors per PC: a simple monitor already owned (for data entry) and the larger monitor to be purchased (for image editing). We are considering having two 3D 24" monitors and two 2D 24" monitors, to make a total four monitors purchased. 4. Peripherals We intend to use already existing peripherals. If we can get Windows free with the purchase, it would be preferred. 5. Why upgrade Our current CPU's have 8 cores, and are therefore not utilizing the licence total of 16 cores. Also, it currently takes several days to stitch one set of images. Could you please point us in the right direction, with your recommendations of cost effective parts that we will not need to upgrade in the next 5-10 years?
  22. Hello guys this is my first forum post, and i can't decide to stay with the stock cooler on my Raijintek Triton. Should i change to a Corsair SP120 High Performance fans? Or to an other fan you may suggest, but please stay in the Black/Blue colot scheme 'couse all the components in the PC is blue or blacl with a small white(even blue leds). Thank you for all for the answers and happy overclocking (but not for amd users including myself )
  23. Hello everyone. I am planning my first build and have already decided on parts. It is going to be high end designed for performance. I will be using it for content creation e.g. Photo/video editing etc., gaming and general use. Is there any advice that I should take on board before building it regarding building or other parts of the process? Using an online calculator tool it estimated that it would use 850-900 watts (just with parts in the plan; I will be upgrading and adding other parts over its life) so is the a minimum amount of fans and radiators I will need full custom water cooling or AIO water cooling (minimum for both)? Any other useful bits of info welcome. I am aware there may be bits I should have Sid here but unsure so please ask if needed.
  24. Hi guys, This will be my first PC build and all of this is completely new to me, and I apologise in advance if you have to explain issues it to me like I'm five. 1. Budget & Location My budget is approximately €1000, and my location is Ireland. I can stretch a little further if required however I would prefer to keep things lower. For pricing, I'll probably get most of the components form Amazon.co.uk so if you are to suggest items based on price, there would be the best reference point. (Account for the fact that £1 ~ €1.40 at time of writing.) 2. Aim Unfortunately, this rig has to be all things for all purposes. I'm a Mechanical Engineering student going on to specialise in Computational Fluid Dynamics with an Automotive Application Aeronautical Engineering degree next year, therefore the two resource heavy activities I'll be doing are 3D CAD (graphics intensive) and CFD simulations (cpu intensive). As of this moment, I don't game however with this rig I would like to play more modern games on Steam, such as Arkham Knight etc., rather than upgrade my console. As a bonus, I would like this to run quiet while idling. I don't mind fan noise when under heavy loading but under idle, when listening to music or watching a movie, I'd like not to hear fans. Easy, right. 3. Monitors Upon building, I plan on running two 21" HD monitors, (which I have), but I intend on upgrading to a larger 32" screen in the early parts of next year, possibly 4K but that's not set in stone. 4. Peripherals I need to buy a keyboard, with a preference to a unifying wireless keyboard from Logitech as I already have a Performance MX mouse that uses the unifying feature. That's it. 5. Why are you upgrading? I'm upgrading as I've only ever used my laptop for university before and it struggles to multi task resource heavy tasks, and it overheats massively when running Solidworks or Steam. My workflow is starting to increase and my laptop is really struggling. 6. My Stab-in-the-Dark System List CPU Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad Core Already owned. NB: I got this second hand of a friend for €100 and can be excluded from the budget. CPU Cooler Corsair H100i or be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 approx. €135 approx. €90 Motherboard Asus Z97-PRO (Wi-Fi ac) €210 NB: When at home during summer the rig has to run off WiFi, while at university it's wired. I have no idea on how to select a motherboard. I assume there is something out there that will do what I need for less. RAM Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 €120 NB: May upgrade in future to 32GB but 16GB should be more than sufficient the foreseeable future. GPU Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB €350 Is this total overkill? Can I go down to say a GTX 760 and save €100? Storage Kingston HyperX Fury 240GB and Seagate Barracuda 2TB or Seagate 2TB Hybrid Internal Drive €145 €105 Is it better to spend the money on the SSD and HDD or save on the Hybrid? Power Supply EVGA SiperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Cert. Fully Modular €90 Case be quiet! Silent Base 800 ATX Mid Tower €115 It's a toss up between this and Define R5. Both are at comparable prices. Which would you recommend, or is there any way to save here as well? I prefer sleeker looking cases (in the aforementioned case I'd take the all black, not orange highlights). As previously stated, silence is a luxury not a necessity but a quiet case would be preferable. Optical Drive Samsung SN-208DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer €20 TOTAL €1185 This is stretching the budget to the absolute maximum and I'd prefer to bring it down. That's all folks! Any and all input is appreciated. Thanks in advance, Lewis
  25. As far as I'm aware, enabling high performance mode in Windows keeps the CPU constantly at its highest clock speed whereas balanced allows the CPU to lower the clock speed when not under load? Is this not the same as what Intel speedstep in the Bios which lowers the CPU speed? Won't this windows setting conflict with all the power saving settings in the Bios?
