Hi, I am planning on upgrading my laptop in the very near future. I currently have an Acer Aspire 3 A315-21-92FK. Even though I modified it with a 2.5" SSD, its AMD A9-9420 chip is an incredible performance dampener. I am planning to get an Asus Vivobook S15 S513IA-DB74 (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1584028-REG/asus_s513ia_db74_ryzen_7_4700u_8_1ts_rdn_15_6_windows_10.html/specs), and will add another 8gb ram stick to make it a healthy 16gb (its a great computer btw if your looking for a $1000 laptop; AMD Ryzen 7-4700U 8-Core, 1tb ssd m.2 PCIe (plus a 2.5" drive slot) and 8gb ram (expansion up to 16) at 3200 MHz). My question is this; is it possible to transfer the data from my current SSD to the one in the new laptop's without deleting the Windows 10 installation on that drive while not transferring my current copy of Windows 10 to it (I want to start as clean as possible on the new laptop without losing my files/applications). I would just put in my current 2.5" SSD in the expansion slot, but I am aware that M.2 is just plain better than 2.5" due to SATA's lack of (relative) speed and would like things to be as buttery smooth as possible after my Aspire 3 experience. Thanks in advance!

Hi all, I am planning to switch laptops in the very near future, and have a question regarding Windows. The new computer has an M.2 SSD, while my current has a 2.5" SSD. The new computer has a 2.5" empty slot, so I will just put my current drive into it. However, I know that M.2s are faster than SSDs (not that noticeably, but my current laptop is quite slow and I would like my new experience to be as top-tier as it can be). Thus, I will be transferring my files to the M.2. However, I would like to uninstall the copy of windows from the 2.5" first so I only use the new laptop's installation. I was looking at this website (https://www.digitalcitizen.life/how-uninstall-windows-8-windows-7-or-any-other-version-windows/) (section 2 of the article); I understand the "remove the boot entry for the Windows version that you want to uninstall" part, but I have a question regarding the "erase or format the partition used by the Windows that you want removed". It says that doing this will "delete volume". Will doing this delete my personal files on that drive? Or will it only clean up the space used by the windows installation. Thanks in advance!

Hi I am trying to get a link to an LTT video of an Apple product or software update, I can't remember which it was. Basically, he went on a small rant on why progress bars are missing for file transfers so you just have to guess when the action has been completed. Finding the video will be very helpful

So my significant other’s iPhone 12 throws a “The device is unreachable” error in Windows 10 when in the middle of transferring photos through File Explorer. My iPhone 12 does not do this on her PC it seems. I can hit “trust this computer” on the iPhone 12 then open it in File Explorer and copy/paste the photos onto the PC. With her phone though it will start transferring photos but will fail part way through. Originally it helped to reset the network settings on the phone and then try again. But now it seems that isn’t working either. What could cause this issue?

SOLVED I used `ddrescue` to copy the files over. It worked!! -------------- I was able to copy my Arch & Windows QCOW2 images from my old 2TB SSD to new 4TB SSD. However, I'm having trouble copying my Lubuntu and Neon QCOW2 images. I'm always getting an "input/output error". Even cloning doesn't work. The fact that I was able to copy my Arch and Windows QCOW2 files leads me to think it's the images that were having problems, I did consider it was a disk issue, but I ran `fsck`, and they were fine.. I also tried to copy the images to somewhere else in the the same 2TB SSD, but that didn't work. Any idea what's up? The images are still usable when I boot it up.

I just bought a new laptop with USB-C. My currently laptop also have thunderbolt3/USB-C. I was wondering how I could move files from my current laptop to my new laptop using USB-C. I plugged in a cable into both laptops and nothing appeared in explorer, so I'm assuming that I am overlooking something. Suggestions?

Hello there, Im sure you are all enjoying this time staying at home as much as i do. Now i am running into this issue where on my P.C I have setup one of my drives as a Shared drive for our T.V, Phones etc. However, when I try to transfer video files (a test video file of 10GB) from my iMac to my P.C (lets call this server PC) I hit this strange data cap. When it goes via Ethernet it averages 500megabits per second, while WiFi 802.11ac 5ghz hits 100-200mega bits per second. Yes I DO NOT expect my WiFi to get all 1Gigabit per second speed, however I should expect at least 500 or 700megabits per second depending on distance and pollution. Yes my devices that im testing are literally within arms reach so transmission isn't far. Regarding my Ethernet it always hits the same rough cap at 500mega bits per second. I have tried everything that I can think of. Changing Cables Disabling 2.5 and 5ghz sharing. Changing switches. Changing devices Changing AP's Fiddling with the Unifi Security gateway Fiddling with Apple WiFi settings in hardware (Everything is setup in hardware and software as 1Gbps 1000Base T) So I would like some help with this, as I hate not solving problems seem simple. As literally ALL of my hardware, devices, wall jacks, and cables are 1Gbps networking, with a few exceptions (because phone and phone lines in my house for some reason was not installed.) Any assistance would be lovely, I am not expecting exactly 1Gbps on Ethernet and especially through WiFi as that is not realistic. What im looking for is atleast 70-80% utilisation on my networking especially for files from computer to computer. Edit 1: The PC and iMac can Receive up to 950Mbps But only sends up to 460Mbps (this is RunningBlack magic speed test on my imac selecting my PC as the test drive on Ethernet.) While under wifi it receives and sends in average 170Mbps. Below is a networking diagram of what my network looks like. I'm trying to figure out a way to transfer files/folders from one computer to another (both running Windows 10) over wifi on the same network. I figured HomeGroup was something like that so I created a homegroup on my desktop. I went over to my laptop to try and join it but it says "There is currently no homegroup on the network". Both computers are on the same network, same 5GHz. Both have network discovery turned on, automatic setup of network connected devices checked, file and printer sharing on, and I've enabled Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections. Why can't my laptop find a homegroup? Is homegroup even something I should be looking at to transfer files using wifi?

Ok, so my old WD HDD is dying on me. Out of the blue, about a week ago, it spun up and sounded like something was grinding gears in there.....like REALLY bad. Thought one of my GPUs fan blades had broken off or something and was spinning around in there lol. Well, I'm gonna get another 1TB storage drive to replace it......but I was wondering. Is there any low impact, free, software out there that can take like an "image" of the drive and safely transfer over all the files to the new HDD once it gets here?? Or I'd be open to any other ideas. Thanks guys and gals

I have noticed this very odd behavior in windows 10 but it doesn't happen in my linux side. I've 1 TB SSD with windows 10 and 500gb SSD with arch linux my daily driver is arch linux but I use windows 10 mainly for gaming and doing some music organizing tasks with foobar and movies that VLC on linux can't play. Anyway I've WD green and WD black drives.. recently I tried to transfer from green to black around 500 files that are between 1-10mb size it began going around 70-80mb/s which is totally fine but slowly it began lowering down to around 10mb/s and even lower at one point it would just show 0 and stay there for like 20 minutes doing nothing. alright then time to boot into arch linux and try the same thing ah okay steady 70-80mb/s file transfer rate locally.. so it can't be failing hard drive because why would linux be okay and windows 10 wouldn't? usually while the transfer rate shows 0 you can hear HDD doing something but on screen nothing is happening which is weird. My guess is that windows 10 has some weird cache managing thing for file transfer or just sucky file transfer program?

Hi all! I am very curious because of the following thing: Speed. What speed? File transfer speed through lan. Here, my mom has a 1TB laptop, and I have LOTS AND LOTS of personal stuff such as games, emulation stuff and personal files. My stuff is around 500GB. When I got my random LAN cable and used it I saw that the cable had a speed of 1MBps to 10MBps. Back then I thought every cable was the same, then I learned LAN category. I instantly knew that my cable was CAT3 (Not e). Im looking forward on getting Cat5,6 or 7. I want to know what speed theoratically Cat 5,6 and 7 would give. My desktop has a 160GB 7.2K drive and the laptop a 1TB (5400 K probably) drive. I am going to upgrade that 160GB to a 1TB or 2TB drive so I get better everything. Data is appreciated.

Please help - no idea what's wrong here. I want to transfer files from 1 pc to another, both running windows 10. But the transfer rates are super slow. Right now its going at 350kbps but sometimes drops to 0 for a while, then 20kbps etc. I can see the 2 computers on the home network but PC2 won't let me access the HDD of PC1, saying I don't have permission, despite drive sharing on. PC1 can see and access HDD on PC2 though. Shouldn't the crossover cable be capable of transfers rated in gbps? If I go to task manager / performance on PC1 it says throughput of 100kbps then changed to 11mbps PC2 says throughput is showing 100kbps then changing to 11mbps during a transfer. If no transfer it was saying 1gbps PC1 is old system, with asus M4N68T-M motherboard, and says network adapter is Nvidia nForce networking controller. It also shows a bunch of WAN miniport entries that weren't there before. PC1 created the homegroup PC2 is old system, with asus Z270-AR motherboard, and says network adapter is Intel (R) Ethernet connection (2) I219-V

So my sister has had a macbook (sadly) for a while now, apparently she was bringing it into the bathroom to listen to music while she showered. She took it to a shop and they said the motherboard was corroding (I didnt see any signs but he probably knows more than I do). She wants me to extract the files from her hard drive so she can have her pictures and other stuff, I got the HDD out and plugged it into my computer via a hot swap dock, turned the computer on and couldn't find it in the file explorer. went to disk manager and I can see it but I cant do anything with it, it is already partitioned, wont let me assign a pathway, I just want to extract the files and helpful links on file extraction or any advice here would be appreciated.

Quick question: What are the pros and cons of SMB and FTP, and if possible, provide some example ideal use cases. I wanted to know since I'm setting up a home server, I just want to know which system to stick to. Thanks!

OK so,a buddy of mine has a really old PC still running windows XP, and his hard drive is super slow and has very little space. so i went and bought some new RAM, a fresh SSD and a couple of fans. my goal is to install windows 10 on the ssd and have some of my buddy's very important documents transferred over, how do i go about doing this? the SSD will then become the OS drive and the storage drive. we need this to be done by this Friday 1/6/17. i've also see that you can buy cheep windows 8 keys for cheap and then upgrade to windows 10. i need to know how to do this fast and painless. an help is much appreciated! thanks! also one more thing, will an older motherboard have the right SATA connection for the newer drive?thanks again!

Hi, I feel like this is the stupidest problem but I'm really at my wit's end trying to get it fixed. Essentially all of my files are divided between the main desktop PC I built a few years ago with a massive HDD and a 128 GB Macbook that I use for school. During breaks, I typically transfer all my large unused files from my Macbook to my desktop and save everything in Google Drive in case I need to access anything during school. Last semester I recorded an hour long video of a conference I had using Quicktime on my Mac. I have it saved as a .MOV and .mp4 file, and altogether it takes up more than 10 GB on my measly 128 GB Macbook. I compressed the .mp4 file and it still takes up around 5 GB. I tried to copy the zip file over to a 16 GB flash drive so I could transfer it to my desktop, but the file was "too big to be transferred through that format." I then uploaded it to Google Drive, but when I tried to open the compressed file it appeared corrupted (Error 0xc10100be). I tried unzipping and opening the file on my Mac, which worked out fine. I then uploaded the zip file to Dropbox and tried to download it from there, but it showed the same error with Windows' default player. Opening in Quicktime and VLC also did not work. Uploading the file to Google Drive and Dropbox took over 2 hours each so I really don't want to proceed with reuploading without a solution in sight. I'm wondering if this could all be due to some compatibility issue since the video was made using Quicktime on a Mac. At the end of the day I just want this stupid video file moved from one computer to another. Any help would be appreciated!

So i have a nikon D600, it works great, in it i have a 64gb SD card and it works totaly fine. One time I transfered some new photos from the SD card to my laptop, and everything was fine, but then i transfered them from my laptop to my external hard drive, and quite a few photos were coruppt. You could open them but one side of the picture was purple, black, white, blue or something similar. I shot everything im JPEG Could this indicate that my external hard drive is failing? i am not sure what is causing this because it just seems weird that file transfer would cause this kind of corruption. What do you think?

Hi guys I'm curious to know if I can send files from my phone to my PC (or PC to phone) when I'm not at home. Let's say I'm in school and I really need something from my PC, can i just access it remotely? Or if my phone is full and I want to dump some pictures from my phone onto my PC, can I do that remotely? It would be really handy but I have no idea how or if any of that works. Thanks for your help :)

Hi, Just now I copied all files on a external HDD over to my laptop. The HDD has about 77.4Gb space occupied, yet after copying all folders on that drive into a single folder on my desktop that folder with all the files in it is only 39.5Gb big. It's too much data to go through by hand, checking if every file is there and not corrupted. So is this normal behavior? Both the internal and external drives have NTFS file systems. Thanks in advance!

Ok not sure if this is the right place for this so I'll move it to a different section if need be, But the problem, I at times need to retrieve a large file(s) from my home system on the go.. I use Google Drive atm but it's a lot of wasted time uploading then re-downloading I was hoping for a more streamline option... Like a non-cloud storage client that I can log into and directly copy files back and forth over then internet. I have seen "hard way" setups (home ftp etc) before but since my ISP doesn't have static IP's they are a pain to keep up even if I need to use my splashtop connection to start the transfer or move a file to a specific directory on the "server" side it will still save a lot time overall.. I don't mind a small fee like how Splashtop is about 25-30 USD a year for up to 5 systems, but much more then that isn't worth it for my use case.

I'm trying to copy, file 4 file, my old 250GB boot drive to a different 500GB drive that will become the main boot drive. I used Acronis but it excludes critical files and i cant change that, when i restored to the drive and booted from it, i load in to my desktop, cant open the start menu, and try when i tried to do something that required a windows critical file, the system just fell apart and i had to force shutdown. Is there any method of copying file 4 file or through the use of a free, trusted software that DOES NOT EXCLUDE ANY FILES when copying or creating an image. TY

The phone is a Xiaomi A2 Lite running 8.1 Oreo (Android One), I transferred the SD card from my previous phone (Nokia Lumia 630) and so far I haven't noticed that any files are missing, but when I connect the phone to my PC and choose the "Transfer Files" option it does show up on the PC but when I open the SD card (on PC) there are whole folders simply missing. I thought maybe it would only show the "default" folders that were created by the Lumia 630 and so I moved a folder to one of those "default" folders to test this (moved them on the phone not on PC) and nothing changed. Another thing I tried to see if anything would happen is I went into one of those folders that are shown and moved a few files in there to more folders, on PC it said "Mi A2 Lite is busy" and failed to move them so then I moved them directly on the phone, that was successful...on the phone, then I connected the phone again to check if the change will appear on PC and it didn't, on the PC it showed it like it was before I moved the files around on my phone. So basically the PC is stuck on one memory of the SD card (even after disconnecting the phone and reconnecting it to the PC) and there seems to be no way to move files from PC to phone and vice versa. Help?

So after long back and forth I ordered an A41 yesterday. So my question is can I just put my old SD card in and have my apps working and data accessible? If not (which I suppose is the case) is there a trick or something (maybe even jailbreak) or in other words what's the best way to copy over my apps, data and possibly even settings?
