So everyone has pliers, I also have a 3D Printer and lots of spare time. This went from idea to reality in about 30 mins. If I recall correctly you guys at Linus Tech Tips you guys have quite a few yourselves along with engineers, powerful computers, a product design team and other resources I don't. Guess y'all forgot how to think simply Easy to make, tiny and cheap to ship Sarcasm in good fate

Hey there, I am looking for a PC Case that I can use for a backup/spare/test rig PC. I have my main gaming rig complete but I want to have a case with a PSU, SSD, AiO Cooler that stay in it so I can "hot-swap" Motherboards/Ram/CPU to test builds and components with. I would like for the case to be as small as possible but I'd value ease of access over size if it came down to it, the case MUST support standard ATX motherboards. I will be switching from Intel to AMD motherboards OFTEN to test different CPU's so being able to get my hands in there without it being a time consuming PIA is a big deal. I was originally looking at open-air test bench "cases" but since this will be used in bursts and then sitting for a long time I want something that wont accumulate so much dust on the components, easier to dust off the top of a case than compressed air an open rig, plus I can't seem to find any decent ones in stock anywhere. This one looked cool. I have been quite pleased with the accessibility on my gaming rig: ASUS TUF Gaming GT501 Mid-Tower but that's a bit overkill and larger than what I'd like for this test rig. Any recommendations are welcome! Ease of access is my biggest concern.

Right now I am in college, and as it turns out a great way to have some laughs is to play group games. One example is "bomb squad" a free game that you can download to your computer and then play with friends via their smart phones being a controller through the "bomb squad controller" app. All I do is hook up my laptop to to hdmi, and then we can play as if it is a console game. Another game we have played is "quiplash", you can get it on steam for $10 (my room mate got it). Almost like apples to apples but not quite. Same thing though were you can use your phone to participate in the game. The reason I share this with you guys is to look for more suggestions and find more games that may be fun to play together. One I would love to play is "Gang beasts" but unfortunately it is $20 bux, and on top of that you gotta have controllers for everyone. We all have decent/average laptops, so I imagine that even some vintage games that can be downloaded for free that you can play online with your friends now, like maybe classic Halo, or something similar would be loads of fun to play together. Or maybe there is a series/genre that I am just unaware of? So in general I am looking for games that are fun to play as a group. Something easy to setup, free or affordable, and loads of fun. If you got ideas I would love to here it, and probably a lot of people here on the forum. Many thanks!

Hey guys.. You've been great the last few times I needed help. Now I need it once more. I work as a teacher and I also help fix computer related problems at the school. A colleage of mine and I was talking about turning some old laptops and PC monitors into a information screen we can set up around the school. my thought was using the laptop motherboard and connect it a monitor, putting into a box and hanging it on the walls. I'm unsure if there are some things I should be aware of. I.e. - If I disconnect to laptop monitor and plug another monitor to it, will it detect it as default screen? - can a script be written to make the laptop, when start bottom pushed, open video, image and other files we want to display on screen, on its own so there is no need to use keyboard or mouse. since we don't want any students getting acces to it. and for easy use. we only want on bottom to start it all up. I hope my description is usefull. otherwise I'll try to answer your questions. I really want this to work in a effective and cheap way.

Hey guys. My little brother is in Calgary, Canada, I work abroad in the mideast. He's been saving up for some time now and I was supposed to help him build his new PC. I wont be making it to him in time. We will try video calling so I will instruct him, I've done it once before with a friend but my brother isnt tech savvy or handy at all with electronics so it will be challenging. I think some really easy to use packaged parts are required. Like a Power supply with clearly labeled cables (maybe even one that comes with the case), the case may be premium enough have enough fans pre-installed and separates the screws for him with labels etc. (I will take recommendations for all of these if you guys have any). Most importantly, an AM4 CPU cooler that uses the default latch mechanic and preferably doesn't involve unscrewing the bracket from the motherboard and involves more points of difficulty/failure. All help is appreciated guys! Ty I'm recommending him an MSI B450-M Gaming motherboard with a 2400G, single slot graphics, his monitor is sub-1080p so it's not that intensive even. ~~~(Post was also put up on the AMD subreddit. Need help.)~~~ Edit: After some looking, I could only find AMD's own aftermarket wraith coolers to use the latch mechanism which I still think is the best route to go

Hi, what would be the easiest case(s) you'd recommend for a newbie? I've only built a PC once, about 12 years ago, and I'm really not a DIY person. I need a "case for dummies" solution, with everything as easy as possible. So far I've been advised HAF XB EVO by Cooler Master. Anything else that would be even easier than this case? Thanks, Larry

pci passthrough PCI-Passthrough made easy for: Proxmox VE 6.0-6.2
Bendy_BSD posted a topic in Programming
It's finally here and tested (for now) I finally finished all the tools and I gave credit where credit's due. So, please enjoy and so far it didn't break my system so it should work just fine. here, use this script to unzip the tools for you (assuming that you downloaded it to your home folder or in the terminal type in cd $HOME, press enter and then type in pwd and press enter and it should give your home directory. so, in this case cd to your folder that you downloaded the tools to and type into terminal: mv PROXPCIPASSTOOLS.zip $HOME/ then press enter. Next, type in unzip PROXPCIPASSTOOLS.zip && rm PROXPCIPASSTOOLS.zip and press enter. cd into PROXPCIPASSTOOLS/ and type in ./install.sh and press enter and just leave the keyboard alone and it will automate the default setup for you. This also includes configuring: 1.) grub 2.) modules 3.) pci ven#:dev# 4.) blacklist modules conf. 5.) backups of necessary files. so, enjoy. PROXPCIPASSTOOLS.zip-

I'm setting up a "memory lab" for a local library. Basically it's a station where people can come in to convert old analog memories on slides, photos, documents, videos and convert them to digital formats for preservation and ease of sharing, I've got a good backlit scanner to handle photo's, slides and documents, but I need to find a good solution for converting analog video such as old vhs home movies. Since the primary users of this station will be the elderly, I need a solution that will be as dead simple to use as possible and stable enough to handle time base sync issues that are common on old home recorded cassettes. My budget for this is about $800 cdn. I've looked into VHS to DVD recorders, but they'e proving very hard to find these days for reasonable prices and probably won't be able to be replaced easily if something breaks. So now i'm looking into PC based capture solutions. There's a reasonably powerful machine set up to run the equipment, as it was specced out to handle video editing(i7 7700, 16GB DDR4, GTX 1060 6GB, 240GB SSD, 1TB HDD), so computing power for encoding shouldn't be an issue. The PC has an open PCIe X1 slot open, though a usb based solution would be preferred. I've had experience with an elgato video capture myself, but when using that solution for recording some home videos from my parents it had some issues, so it would not be a good fit. The software was easy and the quality was decent, but it would crash any time it passed a blank section on the tape. My guess is probably time base sync issues. Does anyone have any suggestions or insights to give?

Ello folks! I see a lot of posts asking what the best VPN provider is. And I say, it's your own! To create your own vpn server, you need an Ubuntu machine running 12.04 or later. Make sure all of your packages are up to date by running: sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade -y Then, we can work on installing the server! Credit to Nyr for creating this helpful script. We want to start by downloading the OpenVPN installer script: mkdir ~/scripts cd ~/scripts wget http://git.io/vpn --no-check-certificate -O openvpn-install.sh Now, we need to make the script executable: sudo chmod +x openvpn-install.sh Finally, we shall run the script! sudo ./openvpn-install.sh If everything works, you should be presented with a screen like this: I'm behind a NAT, so I will tell the script the machine's local IP address. We press enter, and are asked what port we want to be able to connect to the server from (Use port 443 if you want your VPN to be indecipherable from normal HTTPS traffic. More on this later in the guide): Press enter once again and we are greeted with a list of DNS resolvers to use. I recommend using google dns, so we will type 2 and then press enter again. Next, we will choose a name for our first VPN user. We will keep it as "client" for the purpose of this tutorial. Press enter two more times and the installer will start doing it's magic. If you mistype something, press CTRL+C to exit the installer, then run the script again. If you come up with this screen, it means you are behind a NAT/Firewall. This means you will have to port forward your server. The process of port forwarding depends on your router. Since the typical user would host the OpenVPN server from a rented VPS, this should not come up. The installer should finish, and give you something like this: Your OpenVPN server has now been installed! Now we need to get the .ovpn file from the server. To do this, we need WinSCP. This guide assumes you are logging into the server via SSH on Windows with an SSH client like PuTTY. WinSCP uses the same credentials as SSH to login. It's basically the SCP version of FileZilla. You can see my video guide on using WinSCP Here. Now that we have our .ovpn file, we want to edit the file. We can use any OpenVPN client to connect to the server. In this tutorial, I will be using Viscosity. I have found Viscosity to be by far the best OpenVPN client for Windows and Mac. We can double click on the .ovpn file once Viscosity is installed to import the connection. Once the connection is imported, we need to go into the settings. Click Edit We want to go to the Networking tab ans check "Send all traffic over VPN connection" Click Save. We have now imported the connection, and when connected, it will send all traffic through your OpenVPN server. Congrats! You now have the most secure option for keeping your anonymity and crushing through throttling! I hope you found this guide useful. If you have any issues, leave a comment with a screenshot and I will reply as soon as I can. I have tested this methon up to 16.04. ~~~~tt2468~~~~

Hi guys, so i have been using 7zip for encrypting my files, and to my shock and horror, I just found out that my encrypted txt files( i hold passwords on them to copy and paste, for protection against key loggers) are being saved unencrypted to my windows temporary files. Literally anyone with this knowledge could find them. Someone please help me get around this if i can, if not recommend another encryption too, (highest security possible... im a paranoid freak lol) also i do not use password managers as they use cloud, and i hate cloud as the servers can be compromised, but if anyone knows a local password manager with good encryption (aes 256 minimum) let me know............with kind regards and apologies for spelling/grammar mistakes i type too fast lol!

This is a guide on how to get your pc to greet you! (Yes i know that i'm not the first on to post this and I AM NOT THE FOUNDER of this code. What you need: A computer running windows 7 or higher, a windows notepad, Here is the steps: 1) First you need to create a code inside notepad or a text document. Copy this code: Set Sapi = Wscript.CreateObject("SAPI.SpVoice") dim str if hour(time) < 12 then Sapi.speak "Good Morning User" else if hour(time) > 12 then if hour(time) > 16 then Sapi.speak "Good evening User" else Sapi.speak "Good afternoon User" end if end if end if Sapi.speak "The current time is " if hour(time) > 12 then Sapi.speak hour(time)-12 else if hour(time) = 0 then Sapi.speak "12" else Sapi.speak hour(time) end if end if if minute(time) < 10 then Sapi.speak "o" if minute(time) < 1 then Sapi.speak "clock" else Sapi.speak minute(time) end if else Sapi.speak minute(time) end if if hour(time) > 12 then Sapi.speak "P.M." else if hour(time) = 0 then if minute(time) = 0 then Sapi.speak "Midnight" else Sapi.speak "A.M." end if else if hour(time) = 12 then if minute(time) = 0 then Sapi.speak "Noon" else Sapi.speak "P.M." end if else Sapi.speak "A.M." end if end if end if (end of code) 2) Paste this code inside the note that you created earlier. Make sure it ends with .vbs 3) Go to User > AppData > Roaming > Microsoft > Windows > Start meny > Program >Autostart Put the file ín Autostart And Reset your pc When you log in to your account You should be greeted by ex ( Good Evening User the time is 12:00) I hope you like this post and if you need further instructions Please notify me and i will make a youtube video about it! Bye And sorry for the long post here is

I love a clean simple looking desk, which means headphones need a stand! BUT stands can be expensive and take up space! Solution hang them on the wall, clamp onto the desk, OR MOD it yourself. This headphone stand is $11 and looks fine. BUT its not stable, and takes up space! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013P5LZZA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00 Solution: hairdryer and 10 minutes! And now the headphones can hang off the side of the desk and take up 0 desk space!

I've been asked by a friend, who asked me if I knew of a way to get screen shot's or just images of a website which is 1000 ish pages. So is there a easy and quick way to do this, as the alternative seems too be to just go too each of the pages and save copies of them to a PNG or just screen shot them each individually.

HDD Cover Since my laptop was crashing 2 HDD's in the last month i decided to save the current (stil working) 2.5" HDD and put a SSD in laptop. So had a the drive just falling around my desk, so i thought .. some extra drive space in my main rig won't hurt. The HDD in question is a 2.5" Western Digital Blue 1TB drive. i have a H440 NZXT case and had a nice 2.5" spot still open so it would fit nicely. i was a bit wrong The HDD stood out and really didn't fit in the red/black theme of my build. so i thought a cover of the HDD will do really fine. I considered painting, but painting a HDD would be a pain in the butt and i would probably wreck it. I went to a local craft store and searched for a white A4 printable sticker. I found one for 0.5 euro. Off course if you want to make it in another color search for a colored piece of sticker paper. So i went ahead and put it in my printer. made an image 10 millimeters larger then the top of the HDD, i used 110 mm x 79.98 mm (to cover the metal edges nicely). i removed the Western digital sticker by slightly and gently pulling it off. i wanted to make a black cover with my gaming logo. Because my printer isn't the most high tech one, and i didn't consider this might happen. the black printing came out like a typical black inject printed square. But it kinda looks like Brushed aluminium so .... Good enough For the actual applying of the sticker, i started to uncover the left side edge of the sticker and align it with the left side and the top of the metal edge. After firmly applying the sticker on the 2 or 3 mm edge i folded the sticker over and applied it to the top part by gently removing the protector and stroking the sticker to the right as i pull the protector for a nice even surface. Then i secured the right edge. For the front side i trimmed the sticker to the desired length so the sticker would cover the entire front side. i made 2 cut on the sides at the folding line of the top and front, then folded it over and stroked it down till it was secure and then folded the excess over to the right and left to have a nice smooth front side. So time to look how it fits in with my pc. looks allot better in my opinion. Anyway i wanted to share my small Mod that you can personalize your rig with even the smalles things and to share this idea. so you guys can maybe use it and do a 10 x better and nicer job than me Greets Synergie

When I first built this computer, I bought a used i7-950, 12GB of Mushkin RAM and a motherboard for $200 USD, which wasn't a bad deal. The only real problem is that the motherboard I'm speaking of is an ASRock X58 Extreme, one of the ugliest motherboards (Pic) I've ever seen outside of prebuilts and server boards. At the time I was far more focused on getting a working computer on the cheap than I was about looks, and now a few years later it's, erm, charm is starting to wear off. Seriously, who puts copper heatsinks along with plastics with colors including, but not limited to, white, blue, red, purple, yellow, and two shades of orange on a motherboard? But I digress. I've finally purchased a new, sexier motherboard and am about to place the order on a new cpu (waffling between i5-4690k and i7-4790k) and have decided that once I have performance taken care of, I'd like to put a little money into sprucing the old gal up. A few things I've considered are, a new case (mine is more functional than beautiful), braided replacement psu cables, a new paint job on the shroud of my gpu to match my RAM/Mobo heatsinks, and some LEDs to show it all off. I was wondering if you guys in the LTT community had any ideas about other small (<$100 USD preferably) little touches I could add to make my computer not only look better, but also be uniquely mine. I look forward to hearing what you guys come up with! I will be sure to update with some pics once it's looking a little better, maybe end of July, mid august?
