  1. Hi, I've encountered this issue and to be honest, I've run out of ideas and other hardware to test with. My system is running Linux (Ubuntu Studio to be exact) but I don't know if this is a problem with the software as I get the same info when booting to a live USB. The Problem: I have installed 4 x 4GB DDR3 1600 9-9-9-24 (matching) sticks. They recognise in the UEFI/BIOS they are detected when running the "sudo lshw | grep -A 8 bank" command in the terminal (output below) however the total memory detected by the OS (or live USB OS) is only 7.5GB. The problem persists with all amounts of RAM above 8GB, including 2x8GB and 4x8GB all at 1600Mhz but lowering speeds or timing makes no difference. In addition, the 8GB sticks are 1.5v and the 4GB sticks are 1.65v so no mixing of capacities has been done. OS - Linux x86-84 (Ubuntu Studio) Age of system - Yeah right, old but kept in good condition Age of OS installation - 3 Days but happened pre install on Live USB CPU - AMD FX 9590 (with watercooler and Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut TIM Video Card - AMD HD 7790 1GB MotherBoard - Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 Revision 3 Power Supply - Antec 750w High Current Gamer System Manufacturer - None, Custom Build Below are some commands to illustrate my issue >sudo lshw | grep -A 8 bank *-bank:0 description: DIMM DDR3 Synchronous Unbuffered (Unregistered) 667 MHz (1.5 ns) product: 9905403-489.A vendor: Kingston physical id: 0 serial: 570DDE08 slot: Node0_Dimm0 size: 4GiB width: 64 bits -- *-bank:1 description: DIMM DDR3 Synchronous Unbuffered (Unregistered) 667 MHz (1.5 ns) product: 9905403-489.A vendor: Kingston physical id: 1 serial: 590DE408 slot: Node0_Dimm1 size: 4GiB width: 64 bits -- *-bank:2 description: DIMM DDR3 Synchronous Unbuffered (Unregistered) 667 MHz (1.5 ns) product: 9905403-489.A vendor: Kingston physical id: 2 serial: 570DE708 slot: Node0_Dimm2 size: 4GiB width: 64 bits -- *-bank:3 description: DIMM DDR3 Synchronous Unbuffered (Unregistered) 667 MHz (1.5 ns) product: 9905403-489.A vendor: Kingston physical id: 3 serial: 480D1213 slot: Node0_Dimm3 size: 4GiB width: 64 bits >uname -a Linux CJ-Server 6.5.0-26-lowlatency #26.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Tue Mar 12 10:29:17 UTC 2024 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux >cat /proc/meminfo | grep -i memtotal MemTotal: 7908244 kB
  2. can i do raid 5 with Ubuntu server 22.04 on this ? 10Gtek M.2 (M Key) to 6xSATA Adapter, SATA3.0, NO-Riad, for Desktop PC Support SSD and HDD an can the 1st of 5 ssd's be bigger then the others in that config the sixth port will be for a 5.25in blu-ray burner _____________________________________________ i own everything accept for the 2.5in ssd drives an spare low profile cable i also have a spare m.2 adapter by ORICO M.2 PCIe RAID-PM2TS6 these are my build parts raid 5 + burner version 1 the nvme in mounted in m.2 slot 1 with the listed heatsink , the 10gtek m.2 adapter is in the rear slot id like to use the nvme in slot 1 as a cache drive for the raid array i could re-config for more storage if i were to plug the burner into the standard mobo sata port an use all 6 ports on the 10Gtek M.2 Adapter to setup raid 5e if Ubuntu server 22.04 has that option in the install process does it an would the be better ? otherwise id do raid 5 an with a btrfs file-system an the compress=zstd:10 option if possible fyi current desired storage capacity is 6tb as that will cover all 4 of my pc's os main drives an combined other important files a minimum of 6tb will also cover my audio/pic & video library just fine as each pc has a 2tb 2nd drive for games, renders, pics, an downloads the server if for stuff i dont wont to lose.
  3. Budget (including currency): 1500 € Country: France, but I’m buying at MemoryPC (Germany) Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: AAA games in general, Cyber Punk, League of Legends, Minecraft... (In QHD). I'd also like to be able to stream comfortably. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I've made a configuration for my first gamer PC and I'd like some feedback because although I've done quite a bit of research, it's still theoretical… Here's the configuration I came up with: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/F7MFbL (I choosed Motherboard: GIGABYTE B760M DS3H AX WIFI DDR4, RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200 MHz ADATA Premier black (2x 16GB - Dual Channel) but I can’t find them on pcpartpicker) I'm particularly interested to know if there are any compatibility problems (bottleneck…) or if there are better alternatives for the components I've chosen, given that I've almost reached my maximum budget... The configuration I’ve made is available on MemoryPC website at 1500 €. Thanks in advance for your help!
  4. how do i switch the zram algorythem from lz4 to zstd on my gnome spin of Nobara os on my laptop the zram algorithm is lz4 an while ive been able to increase the module size from 8gb to 10gb which always worked better to that big an persisted after re-boot, but the algorithm change from lz4 to zstd didnt , under the gnome spin of Nobara how do i change it to zstd an make it permanent an stay after re-boot , as my laptops ram is fixed at 16gb an no more can be added an when i ran pop-os have the zram set to 10gb an zstd , performed an suited my uses better.
  5. Assuming 2 pcs that both have the following components 7950X Cpu 4x16 gbs of ram Cooling sufficient enough to have the cpu not bottleneck A high end motherboard and an overkill power supply Which family of gpu is going to be the better all rounder in terms of emulating games An Nvidia 4090 or an RS 7900 XTX. I know that overall the 4090 is both more expensive and has more brute force compute wise but emulation tends to be more cpu heavy and i wasnt sure if having an amd card paired with an amd cpu might cause things to have better performance. Similarly, if i'm just balling out of control and have both a 4090 and an 7900 xtx in the same computer, how likely is it that i can just go and tell each emulator what gpu to use and have it work with no problems whatsoever This is a purely hypothetical question that i'm asking simply so that i know what computer components i should save towards. I intend to have an all rounder gaming pc that i would like to have the best raw emulation performance possible
  6. I've been trying to figure out port-forwarding for a simple minecraft server all morning, my head is spinning lol. I used these guides below but found no luck. Port-forwarding is likely out of my frame of understanding but I would still like to regardless. https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=8783.0 & https://www.wundertech.net/how-to-port-forward-in-opnsense/ Here is what I've attempted so far. I added a forwarded port and NAT rule for the port I was going to use. Traditionally minecraft servers are on port 25565, but a guide above was using port 3200-3100 for theirs, so I figured it couldn't hurt while trying to figure it out. I also added an alias to set up this port. Lastly, I changed some port settings in Firewall: Settings: Advanced to allow the reflection of port forwards, and I enabled automatic outbound NAT for reflection. Anyone have any thoughts?
  7. which would be the best config for my desired setup [v1 server build] [v2 server build] v1 would run raidz2 v1 would run raidz3 either would be used as a nas backup server / trans-code an compress / direct to disk 4kbd & bd vi external bd drive & (by makemkv & handbrake) for v1 config 10tb +2 redundant of space which is plenty iv got currently a combined total of 6.5ish tb of ripped an backed up content that took about 5 years to reach so 10tb’s is plenty of breathing room or if i went with v2's build config for a 21tb + 3 redundant that would also be ok for me id like advice an thoughts on either build concept fyi in the past i would rip with makemkv then compress the rip with handbrake down to 65 or 55% of the original size keeping the res & main audio track while setting a fix bitrate using this profile config iv always been tight on space so id usually do a 1 to 1 then dump the uncompressed rip but the still to a while but i haven't do this in years since my rig was a fx 8350/16gb ddr3 with one 500gb hhd so i figure that with a 5600g or 5700g on a separate rig with that amount of ram an storage an type ram an drives an config it would do far better so that id could do my film backups in batches an running with the igpu would greatly improve decode/encode i hope. an to those who will ask about the 14 Noctua Fans an case choice do i need them for me yes i do need that kind of air flow , as in my home during the summer the ac doesn't cool the home that good as it used to an these fans do help with all my builds plus i got a stucco ceiling dust problem as the fine paint flex shit cake up on everything an for pc's uhg so i config all my builds with more exhaust then intake which does just fine for cooling but makes cleaning far easier as main intake is just 1 or 2 spot with a decent filter that i just suck out with a shopvac once a week an this keeps the stucco dust from buildin/caking up in the case the plan with the build regardless which version i do is to lay the case on the side in my rack with some 2in rubber feet with the side fans an run the aio as intakes an the rest as exhaust.
  8. Hi, I was previously going to build my own, but my company is sponsoring a prebuilt so I am going with this. I have a couple questions: Is iBuyPower good? I think it was iBuyPower who did well in that LTT video, but is this a good place to get it? Is this a good config? Is there something I should update to get a better config? Price is less of an issue since the company is sponsoring, but I would like to keep it below 2900. Is the minor upgrades I made to get better thermal paste and RAM worth it? I have a monitor, keyboard and mouse, will I need any more accessories other than speakers, like something for bluetooth? 9. So, In the near future I'm going to buy a new AIO cooler (probably Cooler Master ML120L/120 Lite) and, as any cooler does, comes with an included fan. Now, I currently have only one fan1 on my Cooler Master MB311L case (on the back, pulling air out of the system), and I want to replace it with the AIO radiator. Now, I'll have an extra fan (the included one with the case), that I was thinking to put in front of the case, making an horizontal pull-push air configuration. What happens (and its the main question of this topic) is that I have a GPU that has horizontal fins2 (looking it from the front of the GPU), so, the only way for the hot air to go is from the front (PCIe bracket) and the back (Front of the case) of the GPU. I was wondering, if I add a fan, that pushes air in the other way as the gpu pushes it3, will it make it perform worse than just not putting fan in front of it? What other fan configs can I make that wont make my thermals worse? Note 1: Current Setup. Note 2: Horizontal GPU fins. Note 3: New Setup. Regards.

  11. Hello, so I tried to setup PiVPN on my raspberry pi zero. I got it installed and configured completely. But at the final stage, which is creating a config file for your clients, I have been unsuccessful with getting the file off the Pi. I initially tried the scp command, but I either had directory issues or did not have permission. I tried to do it manually by booting up a Linux Mint VM and plugging in my micro SD card, but I could not copy the file off the VM or upload it to a cloud service due to not having "permission". There were also error messages saying the drive was not mounted, even though the SD card shows up on the desktop of my VM? This is the guide I followed: https://circuitdigest.com/microcontroller-projects/turn-your-raspberry-pi-zero-in-to-a-vpn-server-using-openvpn The scp command is where the issues showed up. So yeah, if I can't send the file over SSH and I can manually copy the file off the Pi....what can I do? Seems like a whole lot of nothing. Thanks.
  12. Managing dotfiles has always been quite annoying to me. But thankfully, I never really had a reason to do it too often. If I had to, all I did was tar my whole .config and copy the file to and external drive. That works fine, but it’s not the best way to backup the constant changes I usually do to customize the way my programs look or act, and as a customization freak, that happens quite often. I had seen many different ways to backup dotfiles: git bare repos, yadm, symlinking scripts, and of course, GNU Stow. All of these methods have their up and downs, but in the end, stow convinced me, and I decided to give it a try. According to their home page: If you don’t really understand it yet, don’t worry, I don’t either! But in this post, I will do my best to show you the steps to backup your current config files, I hope whoever reads this finds it useful. Creating a dotfiles repository The first step to backup your dotfiles, is to create an empty repository in some hosting service, such as GitHub, Codeberg or SourceHut. This is optional if you only want to see how stow works, but necessary to have an external backup outside your computer. Once you are done, clone the empty repo to your home directory, or in any place you want. (This tutorial will be using the home directory). To clone a repo, just do: git clone https://site.com/link/to/repo In my case, I use Tildegit, a Gitea instance, so my command looks like this. git clone https://tildegit.org/chrono/dotfiles.git You can clone my dotfiles if you want to use them, here they are if you are interested. Using stow to backup your configuration Before actually backing something up, we need to install stow, depending on your distribution, you can install it with your package manager of choice. In my case, EndeavourOS is based on Arch, so I do: $ sudo pacman -S stow Lets start by backing up the configuration of a single program. While we can backup our whole .config folder, that’s not a good idea, since some programs store important information that should stay private, and I think its better to only backup what we have actually configured. For this example, I will backup my picom configurations. The first step is to create a new directory to use as a base (if you cloned your empty repo, you’ll be using that). You also have to create a folder structure, depending on where you want the configuration to be stored, this depends on the location the program will read its configuration from. We’ll refer to this folder as dotfiles. If you want to add a README file or other stuff that you is not a config files, you can create another directory inside of dotfiles, in my case, I have made a stow_home folder, which will be where we’ll run the stow command. Lets explain how stow works. Picom expects its config file in ~/.config/picom/picom.conf, so, inside of the new home_stow directory, we recreate that folder structure, but using the program name (picom) instead of the tilde (~), which usually refers to the home folder. Lets put all of this together in the terminal. $ mkdir dotfiles && cd dotfiles # mkdir only if you didn't clone it $ touch README.md other_file.txt # optional $ mkdir -p ~/dotfiles/stow_home/picom/.config/picom/ $ mv ~/.config/picom/ ~/dotfiles/stow_home/picom/.config/ Once you do that, your picom folder is no longer in the .config directory, but inside of dotfiles/home_stow, following the same folder structure, as if home_stow was the /home directory, followed by the user picom and the path to the picom configuration files. Now we repeat this process with all of the files and directories we want to back up. Once done, the behavior of the programs you use, such as vim, should revert to their default configurations, since the user config files are no longer there. So, now its time to fix that! Inside of stow_home, run the following command: $ stow -vt ~ * This will symlink everything inside of stow_home, targetting ~ as the starting point. The -v flag will let you know of everything being done, so you should see an output like this, depending on the programs you backed up: $ stow -vt ~ * LINK: .config/awesome => ../dotfiles/stow_home/awesome/.config/awesome LINK: .config/bat => ../dotfiles/stow_home/bat/.config/bat LINK: .config/dunst => ../dotfiles/stow_home/dunst/.config/dunst LINK: .config/nvim => ../dotfiles/stow_home/nvim/.config/nvim LINK: .config/picom => ../dotfiles/stow_home/picom/.config/picom LINK: .config/rofi => ../dotfiles/stow_home/rofi/.config/rofi LINK: .config/spectrwm => ../dotfiles/stow_home/spectrwm/.config/spectrwm File versioning with git If you are reading this guide, you probably know the necessary git commands to backup everything to the service you chose at the beginning of this tutorial. Generally, every time you do changes you only need to follow these three commands, inside of your dotfiles folder. $ git add * $ git commit -m "Added config files" $ git push Remember that the last command will not work if you don’t have an external repository. The manual of GNU Stow contains a lot more than what I mentioned here, like unlinking and other flags that can be used and might be useful for your use case. Finishing up Anyways, that’s all folks, you can check out my dotfiles if you want to see how stow looks once setup, I am quite happy with it, if I do say so myself. If you feel like a step is not clear enough, please let me know in the comments. Bonus script! So, if you read until the end of this tutorial. I actually did a pretty decent bash script to automate everything here. All you need to do is configure it to your liking, add it to your $PATH and give it execution permissions with chmod +x dotstow, running it like this: dotstow file_or_folder The script is as follows, it uses basic tools like cut and of course, stow. #!/usr/bin/bash # Dotstow - Backup your chosen dotfiles in one go using stow. # Run it outside of the folder/file you want to back up # $ dotstow file-or-program STOW_DIR=$HOME/dotfiles/stow_home DIR=$(pwd | cut -d '/' -f4-) NEW_DIR=$STOW_DIR/$1/$DIR mkdir -pv $NEW_DIR mv -v $1 $NEW_DIR cd $STOW_DIR stow -vt ~ $1 The program does not check if a folder already exists or anything like that. So feel free to leave any suggestions. Extra notes [IMPORTANT] You can just use dotfiles as is without a folder inside it, but if you want to be able to quickly deploy everything using *, you must make a folder where README and other files you don’t want to symlink won’t interfere . Other files, like .bashrc, are not in the .config folder, keep in mind that the path to use depends on where the program needs it to be. In this case, it would have to be placed in ~/dotfiles/stow_home/bash/.bashrc. You can also move specific files of a configuration folder. For example, tut, a mastodon client, saves the account data (passwords, etc) inside of another file in its configuration folder. if thats the case. You should move only the files you want, instead of the whole directory. stow should manage the rest. If you are unsure about the paths you created, you can run the -n flag to simulate the output and see exactly where each symlink would be placed. That way you dont end up symlinking in the wrong place and doing weird stuff to your filesystem. 13. Hey everyone. I just got a new cooler since I'm planning on overclocking. I would like to know the best way to config my fans. I currently have the bottom as intake and the sides as output. The cooler has just arrived and I plan on getting responses on the best method before I do anything. This is my build list.
  14. Hello everyone Sorry for my bad english. I am building a separate pc for mining.. i am not investing that much right now.. my first question is i am getting intel dq45cb motherboard for very cheap and since in gpu mining we really don't need a good cpu that should be enough. it's an quad core cpu that could easily run windows and nicehash. now the question is dq45cb has one 16x pcie slot and two 1x slots. now i know we can connect risers but still i wanted to confirm can i connect two more gpus to my 1x slots? in short can i connect a total of 3 gpus to this board? and also will my gpu performance drop significantly by connecting risers?
  15. Budget (including currency): 4000 euros maximum but can be around 3500-4000 Country: Netherlands Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: 1. Games such as witcher 3, cyberpunk 2077, VR and "next gen" titles. 2. Light-Moderate photo and video editing 3. Light-Moderate streaming 4. Working with VR and big projects in Unreal Other details: So, I wanted to build a config mainly for gaming 1440p or higher. Titles like witcher 3, cyberpunk 2077, VR- next gen titles etc. Based on some research I had compiled the following build (See image attached). Essentially wanted to 3080 but well.. we know how that is going. As for the monitor, I wanted to check if it is worth investing in an ultrawide 4k panel more than an ultrawide 1440p panel (both with 120fps or more). Maybe if it's worth buying a ultrawide at all. (Please consider this build for the monitor config) I am looking for around 30-40 inches monitor sizes; essentially a single one for the time-being. Basically, I wanted to get some expert insight into the build. I do want to future proof (is it worth future proofing a build?) most elements of the build which is why I went with those options. I wanted to check, if this build is good and if I can save some money here and there by buying different brand components or change components completely.
  16. Hello All, First Time Poster! I am having some trouble figuring out the optimal case fan setup for my first build. I am having issues with my CPU reaching high temps (around 8-82c) while gaming with a 50ish% load. Even if that temperature is acceptable, I want to have more wiggle room, as I live in the Midwest and temperatures can rapidly change and I have little to no actual room air conditioning. I am thinking the stock wraith cooler I have is not enough, so I am planning to upgrade to a Noctua-U12-A; but now I am also wanted another opinion on how to setup my case fans since the exhaust from the 12A can’t go to an intake fan right? My case included 4x 43.2cfm 1k rpm fans, and I also got 2x Noctua F12 71.69cfm 2k rpm fans which I placed on the two open top slots on my case. Ideally I would like the front fans to stay the same (they are all idle non adjustable rgb so I don’t want them to be scattered if possible as is the rear fan) https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mvz4Y9 Linked above is my current build, and attached is a basic sketch of my current configuration, plus what I had planned based on some more research. I could take pictures later when I’m back home if needed. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks all!
  17. So currently, I have Dell R720 as my server, and I have 5x12 TB HDD, 1x1 TB SSD for cache and Quadro M2000, and I run UnRaid on it. The power draw is too much so thinking of upgrading it to make it more efficient. This is what I chose, please suggest any changes, make it cheaper? Hoping to get it under $500. I already have A770 so it's $0. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wqgHH2
  18. alright so in my home network I will be making a home server soon, the network config that I need is 2 cables between my NAS and my router for wlan transfers, 1 cable between my PC and my NAS for LAN transfers, and 1 cable between my PC and my router for internet access, how would I go about configuring my networking so that my pc would only transfer files between itself and the nas over the ethernet cable they (I plan on making them) share and not over the cables to my router?
  19. Hello, I updated my local client to get on the latest version and now my Advanced view from the App doesn't show my local client slots. I've attached a screenshot but I'm not sure what I did wrong or how to fix it.
  20. Hello all, I could do with some help. I am looking to write a script, possibly a batch file, to telnet into a switch with username&pwd , run a command, output that result into a text file, place it in a local directory named MMYYYY &Hostname if possible then do the same for another 100 switches. Could the same be better achieved with vbs/python? If this has been done before please point me in that direction, I have searched for it but found nothing that is exactly what im after, normally it throws me onto Linux which isn't something I would be able to use for this. Cheers, N

  22. Hello to all #LinusTechTips! I have a desktop PC at home, back from 2012, and my GPU card got sort of an irreversible physical damage, which I can't repair. So I gotta buy a new one! My config, however, is not one of the most actual ones, and I wanna make the right choice. Therefore, to sum it up, I want to share the components I use and the purpose of my PC and I'll ask anyone who can share an opinion to point me to the right direction. My PC has the following components: - CPU: i5-2500k @3.3GHz - RAM: 12GB DDR3 - MotherBoard: ASRock P67 Pro3 - Power Source: InterTech Energon 650W - Hard Disk: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB - an older graphics card to replace the crashed GTX 560 from NVidia (which simply stopped rendering the image properly one day, by displaying pixels and "advancing" to complete image disappearance, after 4 years and a half of usage ) The purpose of this "monster" () is gaming (World of Warcraft mainly, but also wanna try names like Watch Dogs), computer programming (such as visual studio, android studio etc.) and video rendering (rarely, but happens). My thoughts have been going around the latest affordable technologies released by NVidia and AMD, and, since the budget is tight and I wanna solve the GPU issue, I wanna know if I can do that and what choice should I make. My attention has been going around the GTX 1060 from NVidia, and the RX 480 from AMD respectively. But, if I am going to choose either of those, can I go for the 3GB, or I can aim for the 6 GB version from NVidia, or the 4GB or even the 8GB from AMD ? Also, right now I am using a SyncMaster 740N monitor from Samsung, running on VGA, but I can make an effort and change it if needed (would not rather right now tho, but can do). Thank you in advance and have fun to whatever you're doing!
  23. Does anyone know where SpeedFan saves the config file for all my settings so I back it up?
  24. Hi! I have recently been gifted a AOC i2757fh, 27 inches, IPS, 60hz. I've got a lot more control over the various color options, but I'm not sure what I'm doing with them. Any recommendations on what I should adjust to get the most out of my display? I know IPS displays are better for colors, but coming from my Acer v236 HL, things look a little more grey... Thank you all in advance for helping a newbie out.
