five questions i need help with q1. how do i check to see what compression level my btrfs file system on my ubuntu 23.10 system is using ? q2. how do i add an change its level an apply it to the whole system (id like to set level 4) ? q3. what the correct way to add/edit it into the fstab file ? q4. how do i check why compression level my zstd setting is at an how do i set it higher if i want ? q5. with zstd compression algorithem can i set it to level 5 an have work when i select it in a gui app like xarchiver an if so how would i do that ? when i type in the terminal man compsize i get this compsize(8) btrfs compsize(8) NAME compsize - calculate compression ratio of a set of files on btrfs SYNOPSIS compsize file‐or‐dir [ file‐or‐dir ... ] Processed 90319 files. So I am trying to compress my documents using 7Zip so I can back them up. I usually encrypt them using AES256 because I don't want the cloud service I am using to scroll through my data when I upload it but I am running into the problem where 7Zips says it at 100% on the progress bar, got 00:00:00 time left but it does not show a completed screen as the speed slowly goes down for around 14MB/s to 7MB/s as shown on the screen shot. I have tried pressing cancel and opening the file but it doesn't work and I have tried changing the format for.7z (ultra) to .zip (fast) to see if that helps but it doesn't. Can you guys think of any solutions? Thanks

By good I mean good enough so that I struggle with finding differences between it and the original Blu-ray with casual viewing and a normal distance away from a 65" tv. I've heard answers varying from 3mbps to12mbps and I just want to know a rough answer. I know that the origin of the video is most important so let's assume that it came from a Blu-ray. How good is 5mbps is? Since that's the biggest bitrate I could find with an acceptable size

so basically what i am doing is using a raspberry pi with the steam link app to put games onto my tv. Because my internet speed is not even close to be doing steam link wirelessly I have connected an ethernet cable to the raspberry pi directly from my computer. And I figured that since it is connected directly with a cat5e cable that there would be next to 0 compression and next to 0 latency but there is so much playing racing games is nearly impossible I can send photos if you want me to of my setup btw.

Hi, i have to compress a large quantity of PNG files for a website, which only takes PNG with less than 6MB. The original files are in the range of 10-30MB so i have to compress them quiet a bit. I have tried PNGGauntlet with PNGOUT and OptiPNG (7) an it took a really long time (CPU 2200G; 3,8GHz; usage 20%). Is there a GPU compression tool using OpenGL or CUDA? Or an other alternativ?

Hi, im running a plex server (you know it because i told you ) on it i have a bunch of high bitrate video files (from B-Ray for example), but i notices that no one of the users actually uses 36k bitrate form outside of my network or even locally. So i want to free up some space and convert them down to 10k or so. Do you have any good tool for the job?

I was unzipping a .7z file thaat compressed from 100gb down to 5. When i opened task manager, i was surprised to find that the cpu and gpu was not under load at all. Meanwhile my system was lagging and my disk was pegged at 100%. the 7zip extraction window showed a transfer speed of 120mb/s. My question is what resource is being used to unzip these files?

So I have almost 400gb of video files on my drive and I really don't feel like putting the effort in and sorting through everything. At least for now. So I'm looking for a way to archive the files storage efficient preferably without a loss in quality. And there gotta be a way to at least save some space since I have quite a lost of 5gig 15 min mp4 files lying around. What would you recommend for saving some space in terms of video format or archiving method?

I remember that being true waaaaay back in the AGP era and popular magazines of the day e.g PC magazine had some test done on that but since then I totally just fazed out of such comparisons and was more like an FPS/$ kinda guy But incidentally I watched a few minutes ago a comparison between RX 5700 xt vs RTX 3080 and I liked the collors more on the AMD clip and then I start pausing the scenes and noticed that RTX 3080 seems more blury besides having more blunt colors Then I thought it might be that the guy messed up in post-production with the nvidia clip so I took a look into other comparison videos... e.g this one.. Which is kinda the same in terms of fidelity/difference... Did that guy mess post-production as well? what a coincidence... so I searched for more like this one... Again... It's not like nvidia graphics look bad its just that they are a "click" less pleasing to the eye compared to AMD graphics... (obviously when you guys check use the highest resolution at full screen because as I said the difference is subtle but its there at least using my monitor and eyes ) Like even in the Lara Croft scene I can see more threads on her shirt on the AMD side lol I think linus should make a more "sciency" comparison in having e.g two identical monitors side by side and stopping the game at the same scene and having his friends judge which one looks nicer And If this is true I wonder if nvidias bigger FPS counts have something to do with that? maybe by having blunter colors and being slightly less defined per frame you increase significantly your average FPS count... who knows

As the 1080p videos from my phone and camera are bloated, running them through handbrake removes the metadata, so I have to use ffmpeg with "-map_metadata 0". These are my video settings on handbrake - Nvidia NVNC HEVC h265, CQR 30, Slow preset. Not sure how much rc-lookahead is affecting the video size, and I don't know what the right command for ffmpeg is. Everything else is passthrough'd. I got the .bat script from EposVox's github which I edited a bit, full code listed at the bottom. I just want to mirror all settings in handbrake to ffmpeg. The video quality, as I tested using vmaf are slightly worse than the handbrake's encode, and are always smaller. Although I don't see the difference quite as much without pixel peeping, I only tested with smaller videos. ffmpeg -hwaccel auto -i "%%A" -map 0:v -map 0:a -map_metadata 0 -c:v hevc_nvenc -preset slow -rc constqp -qp %ffmpeg_qv% -b:v 0K -c:a aac -b:a 384k -movflags +faststart -movflags use_metadata_tags "%%A_compressed.mp4" pushd "%2" ::Default variables SET paths=paths.txt ::paths lets you put a bunch of folder paths in a text file and run this across those, instead of individually. Thanks to Aayla for a lot of these upgrades ::Fun tip - select your folders (15 max at a time) and shift+right-click and click "copy as paths" SET /A ffmpeg_qv=30 ::change CQP value here so you only have to type it once. 22 is lossless for HEVC. ::for /R %%A in (*.mp4, *.avi, *.mov, *.wmv, *.ts, *.m2ts, *.mkv, *.mts) do ( :: echo Processing %%A :: ffmpeg -hwaccel auto -i "%%A" -pix_fmt p010le -map 0:v -map 0:a -c:v hevc_nvenc -rc constqp -qp 21 -b:v 0K -c:a libfdk_aac -vbr 5 -movflags +faststart "%%A~dnpA_CRF%ffmpeg_qv%_HEVC.mp4" :: echo Processed %%A ::) ::pause ::Test if the paths file exists and iterate through it if EXIST %paths% ( for /f "tokens=*" %%a in (%paths%) do ( echo Changing to directory %%a pushd "%%a" CALL :ffmpeg ) ) else ( ::It doesn't exist CALL :ffmpeg ) pause EXIT /B %ERRORLEVEL% ::Don't run the function when they're first defined because that's a thing Batch does for some reason??? :ffmpeg for /R %%A in (*.mp4, *.avi, *.mov, *.wmv, *.ts, *.m2ts, *.mkv, *.mts) do ( echo Processing "%%A" ffmpeg -hwaccel auto -i "%%A" -map 0:v -map 0:a -map_metadata 0 -c:v hevc_nvenc -preset slow -rc constqp -qp %ffmpeg_qv% -b:v 0K -c:a aac -b:a 384k -movflags +faststart -movflags use_metadata_tags "%%A_compressed.mp4" ::"-pix_fmt p010le" is setting it to 10-bit instead of 420 8-bit, which is what I had before (removed by me) :: "-map_metadata 0" copies all metadata from source file :: "-movflags +faststart" helps with audio streaming echo Processed %%A ) GOTO :EOF

Now we can easily send more cat photos online and take up less space. Google has developed and released a new open sourced JPEG algorithm that reduces file sizes by about 35% called Guetzli. From Ars Technica (https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/03/google-jpeg-guetzli-encoder-file-size/), it accomplishes this by: Here are some samples of this compression with the original on the left, the libjpeg in the middle and the Guetzli on the right Best thing I can think of this is that it can help to conserve data on upload and download of files and optimize load times on websites.

I have two 8.5-9GB virtual hard disks that I want to compress and put onto a 16 GB jump drive. The VHDs have windows operating systems on them and are sysprepped, but I am wondering if I can put the two VHDs into a zip file to compress it down to below 16GB and if I do, will they be usable when extracted? Not sure if this is the right part of the forum for this question, so feel free to move it if it is in the wrong area.

Greetings. I've been using Sony Movie Studio 13 Platinum, and was unsure of what codec I should use for the best quality, and what the tradeoff is in terms of rendering time. All of my projects are rendered at 1920x1080, 24p without exception. I'm aware that some of these codecs are audio-exclusive, and that others are obsolete, such as QuickTime 7. The highest bitrate I can find is 'XDCAM EX', which has 'HQ 1920x1080-24p, 35 Mbps VBR'. I've also found that 'Sony XAVC S' is the only codec that has a pre-configured 4k option. 'MainConcept AVC/AAC' also appears to have a 'Blu-ray 1920x1080-24p, 25 Mbps video stream'. MainConcept MPEG-2' has the same option available. What do you think is the best codec in terms of video quality, filesize efficiency, and compression artefacts? Which are better in terms of compatibility? (I only upload to YouTube and Facebook). If it's any help, I'm running a Core i3-4160 with 8GB of DDR3-1600 RAM and a 2GB GTX 960. Regards, Aereldor.

recording from obs to a nas drive and the nas drive converting the file to a smaller size for adobe premiere pro. Not sure whether that makes sense, but I'll try my best to elaborate. So I want a Nas drive on my desk or near my computer. (You get the idea) I want to have it set up so my girlfriend and I can access it. I want it so my recordings from OBS are stored on it, and so that my premiere cc output is stored on it. I'm not too sure on file types but I record to MP4 multi channel audio and render out to MP4 for YouTube all in 1080p 60fps. As you can imagine the files sizes are massive. I'm wondering if I can set up a server/Nas device on the cheap (student budget) That can allow me to record to it, then compress the file on the fly so I then when I output it in Adobe premiere cc the file will be smaller? I also want to be able to store my massive library of films on it, as well as my music and photos, and I want to be able to set it up so my photos automatically back up from my phone and my girlfriends phone to it. As well has having automatic backups of our pcs? Can someone make this readable in a format for a dyslexic person? Thank you.

I recently realized I was running out of space in my drives and was wondering if I could compress the drive using the Windows. The drives in question are for gaming and I was wondering if they compression has any significant effect on the drives read/write performance. Also, does anybody know why drives fill up so much faster than you think? One of my 500GB drives' steam folder is around 300GB, even though my drive says it's capacity is nearly full. I don't have anything else significant on that drive to take up an extra 200GB. Could they be undeleted game updates that have been bloating the drive for the past several years? Thanks.

I'm looking into getting a custom watercooled PC(https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Plog/saved/ptcKZL) and I am not sure what fittings I need. Right now these are the main compression fittings I will be using https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-hdc-fitting-12mm-g1-4-red but I would like to use some 90 and 2x45 degree fittings. Do these https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-af-angled-2-45-g1-4-black and these https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-af-angled-90-g1-4-black work with my current red compression fittings and is it neccesary to have a fitting to go along with the angle adapters I would also like to hear any thought about using the thermal grizzly conductonaut on my gpu block, I have read some posts warning people of using it but I'm not sure why, can someone please explain it to me? Thank you to anyone who chooses to help me as I have only ever built one PC before and it was pretty basic.

Sup, i just finished compressing NTFS on my main SSD, Sandisk SSD Plus 240GB (for testing purposes and the glory of satan), and encountered something odd. As i expected performance dropped a little bit on the Read side, something i can can undertand of course. But the readings on 4K files writes are huuh... 620% performance increase O_o ? As a side note, i can say writings didnt take much of an impact since -probably- the nand performance is higher than the logic board can deal with, so compression takes no effect except on 4K and this is where my brain crashes. Anyone has any idea WTF is going on?. ps: 25 Extra GB on my SSD is quite nice ps 2: I dont give a damn about NAND writes and degradation. I liked to test first hand the NTFS file compression pros and cons. Cheers!

So I have a PHP script that will serve users a photo based on a GET request. See spoiler for code: Is there some way to add a GET like ?i=myfile.png&c=1 where c=1 will tell the script to compress the image before serving it to the user? Im using PGP 7.1.7 on IIS.

Hello all, I did a complete tear down of my watercooling loop since it was running for a year and I noticed these tiny little bubbles on the compression fittings. The system overall had no growth or issues with different metals being mixed. 3/10 fittings did not have it but i dont remember where they where. Any idea of what these are? I tried soapy water and cotton swabs and they dont come off. I could probably use them again and have 0 issues but want to know if anyone else has seen these before? Thank you

My computer is taking forever to turn on and I have to wait for 5 to 10 hours for it to turn on. It just says with a blue background "Getting Windows ready, don't turn off your computer" When it does turn on it works fine but the same thing happens when I turn it off and on again. I also noticed that my C drive (ssd) had no space and I used CCleaner to see what it was and it seems like it was 40gb of windows log files. A bit after I noticed that the 40gb i had free on my ssd slowly decreasing too I assume its windows log files because then it eventually goes to 0 free space and says low disk space. These 2 things must have some correlation. Please help me until I can confirm it is fixed. Thank you!!

So for a while I have used https://www.onavo.com/ to save data, but I want to use a home VPN so I have access to my personal network. I want a home VPN that will also compress data like Onavo will. I am willing to set up my own home VPN server, but I do not know of software that is able to do this. Can anyone help me out? I will be happy to post results if it works out. Thank you! - Cubli

Hi! I will be upgrading my soft tubing watercooling setup to a hard tubing setup and am choosing between ek hdc compression fittings https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-hdc-fitting-12mm-g1-4-nickel or bitspower enhance multilink fittings. http://www.bitspower.com/html/product/pro_show.php?products_id=3224 I plan on using 12mm OD EK PETG tubes. I like the design of the bitspower one, and have read that their quality is top-notch. It costs about 2 dollars more than the EK though, and I was thinking if its worth it. And also I am concerned about the bitspower being a low profile (looks like it) fitting. Which should I pick? I will be ordering my parts by tonight.

Hi, I'm building a surveillance pc/server on a budget, and I think I might need some advice Here is what I got planned so far for the core system (not including stuff like networking, mass storage, case, PSU and so on): Pentium G3258 (because its cheep, decently powerful, runs cool and I've had good experiences with running it 24/7 in a minecraft server before) MSI Z97 board (I know Z series chipsets are more pricy and H is cheaper, but I might need the lane options later) 8 GB RAM 250 GB SSD (for OS and temporary storage) My plan is to have the computer just take the video feeds from the cameras, compress it and store it on a local NAS that will be accessible via ssh form off-site. The computer does not need to display the feeds or anything like that, just receive, compress, store, rinse, repeat. So most important question; how should I compress it? Is there any good software that could utilize a GPU for this kind of semi-real-time compression? (cheapest solution, GTX 580 and a HD 7850 I could re purpose for this) Do I absolutely need a Capture Card for this? (I know this is the preferred solution, but its expensive for cards that take more than one stream at a time. Also for this solution I have only seen cards that take HDMI inputs and I can't wire up an ice cream factory with HDMI in every nook and cranny) Is there perhaps any cameras that can do this on-board and save to external media? (I know many cameras do this, but it has to be one that is network-attachable and affordable, e.g. a wifi webcam if that is something that exists) Secondary question, guess it depends on the answer of the first one for compatibility; what OS (and software, if not answered in the previous one) should I use? I know Windows is versatile and easier to use, but this is the kind of thing I imagine there would exist a Linux distro for, and frankly, no matter how much of a pain in the ass Linux can be to set up properly, once you get it working, it usually stays working. I'm afraid I cant say that for Windows... All responses appreciated
