Hi guys! I’ve recently been gifted an unbranded, Chinese headunit. I haven’t yet connected it to my car, but I’m almost certain that it’s the PODOFO Q3508. It most likely isn’t the PODOFO Q3570, which supports Carplay. As I really want Carplay, I thought that I might turn this situation into a fun project. So I want to add wireless Carplay to the device that I have. This is my current plan: The headunit supports wired MirrorLink with touch and audio passthrough for Android Phones. So I can buy a cheap Android phone which supports OTG. Then I can buy a USB hub for phones, with external charging and OTG for data transfer, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/TUSITA-Adaptor-Charging-Adapter-Raspberry/dp/B00LTHBCNM I can then add this CarlinkIt adapter into the mix: https://www.carlinkit.store/products/carlinkit-usb-dongle-wireless-carplay-android-auto-box-wired-mirrorlink-for-aftermarket-android-screen-car-multimedia-player-bluetooth-auto-connect And lastly, I can connect it all together. The hub would be connected to the phone. Into it I’d plug charging from the cigarette lighter, a USB cable from the headunit for MirrorLink and a CarlinkIt adapter. I’d also install the necessary app. The phone should charge and the data should transfer properly between the devices. Now I should be able to connect via Bluetooth with the Android phone. The phone would open Carplay in the app. I’d then be able to display and control the app through MirrorLink. However, besides being pretty bonkers, this plan may have issues: The USB port from the headunit sends a charge into the phone (I think). If I turn the switch on my little hub to charging mode, then the charge will be sent into the headunit. Won’t things fry in that scenario, or todays electronics are capable of handling that? The headunit supports microphone input. However, if my iPhone will never be connected to the headunit itself, but to the Android phone, the mic won’t work, right? What should I connect the mic into then, the hub or the iPhone? I’ve seen MirrorLink behave overly ‚securely’ on YouTube and turning off basic apps like maps during driving. Is that possible to happen here too? Is there anything else I should consider? I need your help in checking my plan and its issues. I want to identify potential issues before I spend a lot of money on this project. Also if anyone here has attempted anything similar then sharing your experiences would be awesome. Alternative plan: I can politely ask the support team of Podofo for their latest firmware and software and hopefully be able to flash it to this device, but I think that receiving the files has a chance of 20% and another 20% of not bricking my headunit. I don’t think I can do anything else. Sophisticated methods like a separate device that supports Carplay, being connected into the headunit’s display directly, probably won’t work because the unit doesn’t have the video input (except for the reverse camera, which I want to use). I attached the connections below. Huge thanks in advance!

Hello! First forum post here! I have been watching LTT since the Langly House days and love the content. Have you all considered creating a car channel, I have loved seeing the car reviews on Short Circut and think a channel, similar to Auto Focus, would be really cool to see from the LMG team. Something with a weekly or biweekly schedule would be fun. I don't know, I have had this on my mind for a few months and never really knew where to share it. Then I remembered the forum existed lol.

So. There is gsmarena with their best search on phones with any option available ( https://www.gsmarena.com/search.php3? ) Is there any similar kind of search but with cars?

Recently I had a dream where someone added a CPU or a GPU to a cars ECU. This idea sounds similar to the NVIDIA bread, I know, but hear me out The CPU could be inserted into the ECU where it could perform tasks such as accelerating and braking faster. The CPU could then use the steering wheel and tyres as "memory" because you can't put RAM in a car. I would go for a Ryzen Threadripper Finally, I can drive my car at 180fps

Budget (including currency): $1500, maybe $2000, yes $2000 Country: Bulgaria, what does it have to do with the question? Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: mostly self driving, object detection etc. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I think I am an experienced software engineer, self thought, and decided to start a new hobby - build a self driving car from scratch, I mean the software is going to be from scratch, the car maybe second-hand one. The goal is to achieve level 5 autonomy. I need help for building the computer for the car. Can anyone give me some pointers, please?

I hope someone else hasn't done this yet. Summary Reports of chip shortages impacting all manner of industries abound, it’s not just graphics cards that are hard to come by. Now comes news that megafoundry TSMC is prioritising production of chips for cars over other applications. What hope is there for us poor gamers ever getting our hands on a new GPU? According to CNBC, TSMC plans to prioritise new production capacity in favour of car makers. The move comes as pressure reportedly mounts at government level for TSMC to prioritise chips intended for cars. The global auto industry is currently suffering from significant production delays due to the shortage of chips, leading Germany’s Economy Minister Peter Altmaier writing to his Taiwanese counterpart requesting that TSMC, a key supplier of semiconductors for cars, focus on production for cars above all. Similar requests have reportedly been sent from the US, the European Union and Japan. Quotes My thoughts Well, I am personally not gonna be making any GPU purchases in the foreseeable future but don't panic, please don't. This also seems to not affect the current production capacity but future one's, so....... I'm not too worried. Hi, I don't feel like making an account on a car forum so Off Topic it is. 1. Step: Locate and drill out the dimples in the sealing insert. Make sure not to penetrate the 3,5 mm drill beyond the thickness of the plastic as this will damage the unlocking mechanism of the barbs that hold the piece in place or possibly the cable harness. Step: Insert into the drilled holes a rod such that the advancing side points away from the horizontal center of the insert. Once inserted about 2 cm push the rod's end you are holding away from the horizontal center of the insert. This unlocks the barb that hold the insert in place. Then pull on the insert away from the vehicle. Repeat this for all four holes. Step: Pull out the rear side of the insert first, then to the right and outwards to maneuver the hinge by the fender. (Ziehen Sie zuerst die hintere Seite des Einsatzes aus der Karosserie. Dann schieben Sie den Einsatz etwas nach hinten und außen, um das Scharnier hinter dem Kotflügel hervorzumanövrieren.) Step 4: Unplug the door switch and lock unit. (Trennen Sie den Anschlussstecker des Verriegelungsschalters.) Step 5: Gently lever on the three barbs of the charging indicator socket and lift it out. (Hebeln Sie vorsichtig die drei Widerhaken der Aufnahme der Ladeanzeige aus dem Weg, um sie zu entfernen.) Half Done Assembly is the revere of disassembly. (Einbau geschieht in umgekehrter Reihenfolge.)

I've always wondered why Linus Tech Tips never added a space for cars. What I mean, Is interesting cars and integration with technology being the focus point. Not Tony's Honda civic, or Dans Santa Fe. I feel like this channel could easily grow double or even triple its subs / views by being dominant inside of technology and intertwining gained knowledge and applying it to vehicles. Projects like a carberry PI or reading PIDs through your android rather than paying for those obd2 bluetooth apps / dongles like Torque which can be done in a free fashion rather than paying (x.xx) just to do it. I work as a sysadmin, and have found that a lot of PC techs and networking techs I've worked alongside have all had somewhat of an appreciation for vehicles. Quite a few coworkers own sports cars themselves, and you can guarantee they spend lots of time looking up bolt on parts / tuning methods / gains of horsepower torque or even utility on modifications they make to their vehicle. I've even helped them get out of their comfort zone and go with mods that may seem "hard to do" for a beginner. The purchase of their new facility will no doubt help them in their statistics tracking of everything new on devices and technology. However, I feel like adding cars into their channel and a dedicated personality to make it fly would honestly make the channel more interesting than it I find it now. Alrighty, now that I've had time to spill out my pipe dream.... What is your favorite car or car brand and why?

Do you think that Dodge should bring back the Viper as an ultra high performance all electric american-made supercar. All-wheel drive. With a 1000 mile range. 2500 horsepower. Street legal. With an electronic automatic transmission. With tons of performance. And with a maximum speed a 365 mph. What do you think. Do you think this will be a big bold move for Dodge. To reintroduce the Viper as an electric vehicle?

EDIT: I think it's time to try something new, so I'm open to different game genres. Hello everyone. I've been playing racing games my whole life basically. I went through the entire NFS saga, from "The Need for Speed" to "Heat" (including Shift), Gran Turismo, Forza, The Crew, Colin McRae/Dirt, Grid, FlatOut, Project Cars, Assetto Corsa, Wreckfest, Driver, Destruction Derby, Midnight Club, CarX Drift and a lot more. I went out of ideas. Can anybody help me find a good racing game? I pretty much got bored of playing all of these titles already. Currently I only own a gaming PC. So, any ideas?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announces FSD subscription coming in 2021
AvMaverick posted a topic in Tech News
Summary Amidst a series of random tweets from Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Sunday, he has confirmed that a Tesla Autopilot will subscription is on the calendar, sometime in Early 2021. This is one of the many things you could once buy moving to a subscription package now. This comes after he announced that FSD will be going up by $2K this monday. Quotes My thoughts This is clearly happening, and there is no workaround. This is one influential step Tesla is taking that makes the vehicle industry more service-based rather than a one-time buy. @LinusTech's prediction on items that we buy soon becoming a service is happening. As a consumer, I feel this is against consumers and more in line for companies wanting to earn more and more, and I feel it's overall impact on consumer culture will be thoroughly negative. His prediction in the heated seat subscriptions stands right here, and as a 15-year old kid, this is scary for me to plan for financially... Summary Starting in Amsterdam Lync&Co are rolling out their new fleet of subscription based vehicles. You can't buy them in any showroom but can sign up for the "mobility" subscription providing you an SUV, Crossover or Sedan. The company looks to expand their offering with a plug-in Hybrid SUV and a new "sharing" option Quotes My thoughts Like most of these proposed "subscription vehicles" it sounds a lot like a lease where you don't actually own the vehicle at the end but pay the same or more than what you would for leasing the same vehicle for 3-4 years. It definitely makes sense for some lifestyles and specifically now with less known about the future of vehicles whether petrol, hybrid or fully electric are going to be the sustained direction of the industry. Assuming you can change the vehicle at any time like the proposed Nissan vehicle subscription it may be practical if you are needing the most cutting edge tech features or have a changing need for daily and weekend fun cars. Lync&Co don't seem to offer a "fun car" with more practical options which I find unfortunate especially in Europe where some of the best roads are, weekend getaways are a highlight of most "fun car" owner's lives while wanting a practical hybrid during the work week. Budget (including currency): ≈500; competitive w/ dash cams Country: U.S. Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: CCTV; but with moving vehicles/traffic Other details: Mostly wondering about a camera that will do what we want and have a signal we can use. There’s lots of info about making your own cctv on YouTube so I imagine maybe that’s a good place to start? Seems to be lots of interest but I haven’t seen anyone here talk about using anything other than an r pi; using a whole pc with 12v ac power is NOT as issue for me there’s tons of info about that for subs and for van builds. You could even have it’s own battery to run off while parked and it won’t touch your battery; but the batteries both charge up when the car is running ect ect. Def ez pz. This is something I’m interested in working on and I had always assumed it was easy and I probably wasn’t the first. I’d like to find a solution so I’m open to any and all ideas and input. I don’t see why this can’t be done and hardwired into my car for the price of high-end dash cams or even significantly lower; there’s tons of info about hooking up cameras to pc’s for making your own cctv and all sorts of motion software for that. As long as there is a camera that is able to give digital feed and have the feed be used I don’t see any issues or limits even as far as data storage. if a thread like this exists already please lmk! I made my account for this so I’m new and new to forums or posting at least thanks!

Well it has happened. BMW just launched the subscription based service for various "optional extras" including heated steering wheel, seats, Driving Assistant Plus and Adaptive M Suspension in the UK. Sadly I can see this being a norm I mean at what point do you actually own the vehicle if manufactures can lock hardware based options behind a paywall? What if house builders did this, buy a house but you have to pay a subscription to use the bathroom or kitchen then the front door. I get locking software based options behind a paywall and you could argue that software in active development costs money but charging £15 for heated seat and then an extra 10 for the steering wheel is quite frankly ludicrous, its a damn wire that heats up and its present in the car its not costing BMW extra its probably saving them money as they don't have to manufacture ones with and without, any who I don't know how to finish this other than BMW just lost my business. Time to say hi to Ford I guess,.

Dear Users, I have always wanted either a go kart or to repurpose a tractor or lawnmower into a little drift demon, but I am worried about so many things about kart/vehicle construction. Here are some topics that if you know stuff about lets discuss! I want to build two vehicles currently, one slow and one fast. A) If I go for a gas engine, how much horsepower would I need to go slow? And how much to go fast? Say my craft is 250 pounds including my weight, would a 7 hp engine be nice, or what equations can I use to calculate this. B) If I go for a electric motor and some fat batteries what equations are there to calculate how many Watts I would need to go fast or slow, any info on this would be great. C) If I want to rebuild or build my own front of the car, how do I build an axle and connect body work onto it? Any ideas? D) How do I know if my chassis can stand the forces I will be placing on it? Should I make everything out of iron or steel? Do I need like a roll cage for stability? I was gonna build the body work with wood. I really dont need to have my vehicle break at speed. E) How do I connect a steering wheel to an axle or do they come as a combo? Any videos or links would be awesome. I know this all may sound vague and like I dont know what I am doing and haven't done a lot of research, but I have, most go kart builds start with a pre built go kart or something thats expensive, I want to build something so custom that I want to DYI it all with literally 0 knowledge beforehand. Absolute learning time. Thanks! -GEESMAN

Linus freaking called it BMW is planning to start offering paid subscriptions for features in their cars. "The important takeaway here is that over-the-air updates and features will play a big role in BMW ownership, but more importantly, that users will have to pay for features already installed in their cars, such as heated seats, infotainment features, etc." Looks like cars as a subscription is way closer than anyone previously could have imagined. I bet they don't even drop prices in their cars either considering a base model 3 series starts a around $41000 US and a fully kitted out, non M, comes in at around 54-55k... I figure the lack of having to pay for upgrades up front would make them cheaper because of the subscription fee but I still wouldn't be surprised to see the price right around the 49-51k mark which is pretty ridiculous if you're not interested in paying for all that extra crap. Here comes the Linus told you so on WAN show moment: BMW seems to be taking the first real step towards "cars as a service" by making safety and comfort features optional to buy for a limited/permanent time period. Jup, "next-level gouging" seems pretty to be pretty much on point Is this really the group of people that needs to save money? Seems like a lazy excuse to make more money in the end. Also "vehicle as a platform" seems to be the industry term instead of "cars as a service"? I feel like there are already way too many options on cars, especially from German brands (though I myself am from Germany so I might not look at this subjectively). As we have seen with Tesla already. First time posting here, so I'm not experienced with how to summarise the article, sorry for that. My thoughts Well, Linus told everyone and I personally don't see cars as a service not happening in the future. Still this is a terrible move for consumers, as BMW is basically just pulling the EA move here and putting micro transactions into their product. Ok, so we all know everything is getting the RGB treatment, from mice to mousemats to PC's and now.... Cars. McLaren will include a 'lightning' system for the engine bay in their latest and upcoming car. While not strictly RGB, it is the first manufacturer to use this sort of lighting (to my knowledge) to this effect. LINK: http://www.topgear.com/car-news/first-look/mclarens-new-supercar-has-40-litre-bi-turbo-v8 'Sense of occasion (or posing, if you prefer) has been taken into consideration too, with red ambient lighting illuminating the engine bay when the driver unlocks the car. ' is what TopGear have to say about it. Lighting has been used in cars for years for puddle illumination when exiting and entering cars, and yes people do put 'neons' in cars but this is a now a manufacturer installed feature. Lights inside the car, for the most part, serve a purpose, while this is very much like us putting lights into our PC cases... to show off whats inside Is this a sign of things to come? Will we see more manufactures follow suit?

Using a self driving program call Universe with the integration of GTA V, developers who are building self driving cars can now train it, in the world of GTA V. The program is part of the DeepDrive project, built and maintained by Craig Quiter, who works for Otto and had recently delivered over 50,000 cans of beer over 120miles (193km) using a self driving truck. To start, all they need is to purchase a copy of the game, download the Universe program, and they're all set. The program includes a demo self driving agent, where developers can try it out. It can later on be replaced with one of their own self driving agents, where they can test it to see how well it works. GTA V is used for this test is due to it's almost realistic environment and driving conditions, where it has, road signs, bikes, pedestrians, construction, and plenty of other obstacles that mirrors real life driving. This helps developers, test out their self driving cars without the need to hit the actual road. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/01/12/gta_v_open_ai_universe/ https://openai.com/blog/GTA-V-plus-Universe/

Hi, so I am installing some aftermarket horns in my car and the car originally came with a single horn hooked up to a 10 amp fuse. Now that I am installing a pair of aftermarket horns, I used ohm's law to calculate the total power draw, and I'm looking at around 11 amps (aka 5.5 amps per horn). I know that my 10 amp fuse with blow up if i were to hook up both horns but would I be fine if i swap out the 10 amp fuse for a 15 amp fuse? I know that installing a bigger fuse in a smaller fuse spot could be bad if there is a short circuit since it would cause a fire, but in my case i should be fine right? What are you guy's thoughts on this? I'd like to hear from people with electrical knowledge down on the comment section below.

Has anyone made the switch from an SUV to a car? My dilemma is that there's a 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX Limited Hatchback for sale in my area for an awesome price, has far less miles than my current vehicle, and I've wanted to own one for a few years now. I could easily afford it if I sold my current vehicle, but I feel like I may regret the switch from an SUV to a smaller vehicle. I'd like to know what the community's opinion is on my situation and switching from a SUV to a car, and I'll post some things to consider below. Currently I drive a 2005 V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee in OK condition. Some things to consider: I'm a college student and move around quite a bit of my belongings around every couple of months I live in an area that gets LOTS of snow, and our winters last from late November to mid April, and 300+ inches of snow is an average winter for us I do lots of winter driving as I'm an avid snowboarder and also a snowboard instructor I drive in many very bad snowstorms as it's literally my job to go to work when it's snowing I own a boat, and also a cargo trailer and tow both occasionally, but mostly use these in the summer so I would have access to another vehicle to tow these. My Jeep gets 12-14 mpg at best during my daily driving vs. the Impreza's 18-20 mpg I would also have to switch from automatic to manual, which I've never driven before but have an extremely good idea of how to drive I do a lot of city driving during the school year TLDR: My main concerns are if I can deal with the less space and how the Impreza will handle in a major snowstorm.

Sup guys! I know this aint a car forum but LTT never fails to impress! I don't suppose anybody can enlighten me on whether having a radar/lidar detector in england is actually worth it seen as all our cops use laser guns rather radar? and if so, does anybody have any suggestions on a half decent one for less than £160? (I know the valentines and escorts are the best but they are about £300-£400 over here) Considering these new ridiculous laws that have just being brought into place regarding speeding in england, and if I get 6 points or more on my licence I'll lose my job I figured a radar detector is probably a good idea... Cheers in advance lads EDIT: I have checked, and they are fully legal in the UK (Where I am)
